maskaribhāṣyasahitam.
kriyate 'dya mayā bhāṣyaṃ sūnunā vāmanasya tu //
ko vābhisambandhaḥ ? ayamucyate-santi caturdaśa vidyāsthānāni, tadyathā-
iti //
teṣāṃ madhye parigaṇitamidaṃ dharmaśāstramārabhyata ityabhisambandhaḥ / athavā-puruṣasya sukhaduḥkhopabhogārthaiḥ śarīrendriyaviṣayaiḥ saṃyogaviyogarūpo janmajarāmaraṇaprabandhaḥ saṃsāraḥ / sa ca dharmādharmanimitto nānyanimittaḥ / tayośca dharmādharmayoriṣṭāniṣṭopabhogahetutvādupādānaparivarjanārhai tau bhavataḥ / tadubhayamaparijñāne na sambhavatīti dharmādharmasvarūpāvabodhanārthaṃ gautamena śāstraṃ praṇītamiti / prayojanamapi cāsyaitadeva, dharmādharmopādānaparivarjanayoḥ puruṣārthatvāditi / abhidheyamaṣṭakādīni, yathā śrautānyagniṣṭomādīnyavaśyakartavyāni tathāṣṭakādīnmapīti / tatra sarvakāryāṇāṃ kāraṇataḥ pravṛttidarśanātpūrvaṃ kāraṇaviśeṣapratipādanārthamāha-
ucyate-vedasya dharmamūlatvānuvādaḥ taddvāreṇa smṛtiśīlayorapi dharmamūlatvapratipādanārthaḥ / kathamiti
ceducyate-vedavacanāduccaritāttatpadārthavidāṃ viśiṣṭer'the yā pratipattirniḥsaṃdigdhā jāyate na ca kālāntare deśāntare puruṣāntare 'vasthāntare vā viparyeti sā dharmamūlamiti /
idānīṃ sūtraṃ vibrīyate-tatra vedo mantrabrāhmaṇākhyo grantharāśiḥ / vida jñāne, jñāyate 'nena dharmādisvarūpamiti vedaḥ / yadyapi smṛtyāderetattulyatvam / tathāpi parivrājakādivadrūḍhatvādadoṣaḥ / tathā ca smṛtyantaraṃ-
śrutiśtu vedo vijñeyo dharmaśāstraṃ tu vai smṛtiḥ //

sa ca ṛgvedādibhedena bhidyate / jātyapekṣayaikavacanam / dharmaḥ karma ācāra ityarthaḥ, apūrvākhyo vā / mūlaṃ kāraṇaṃ jñāpakaṃ, pramāṇamityarthaḥ / tatra vidhipratiṣedhātmako hi vedo dharmādyavabodhakatvaṃ pratipadyate, na tu mantrārthavādarūpa iti ceducyate- arthavādāderapi vidhyekavākyatvenopakārakatvāt pāraṃparyeṇa dharmamūlatvamaviruddham / arthavādastāvat stutinindādvāreṇa vidhipratiṣedharūpatvaṃ pratipadyate, mantrastvanuṣṭānakāle vihitārthasmārakatvāt / tataḥ sarvaprakāra eva vedo
dharmamūlamiti / kecinmantrārthavādamūlameva pratijānate yatā 'dhanvanniva prapā asi'; ityatra prapā kartavyetyādi / anye tvāhuḥ-adhyayanamātrādeva dharmasiddhiḥ, yathā'ha-
iti //
ataḥ pāṭha eva dharmamūlamiti / tadayuktaṃ, karmaphalaśruteḥ ānarthakyaprasaṅgāt, mīmāṃsakairadhyayanaphalasya nistatvācca / athavā vedavācyā kriyā vedaśabdenocyate, sa dharmasya mūlamiti / śyenādiṣu na bhavatīti cet, ucyate-tatrāpi vairivadhāt prāṇadhanaputradārādirakṣaṇadvāreṇa dharmo 'styeveti / tataścāvagamyate-yadidaṃ putrapaśugrāmādi dṛṣṭaṃ, yacca
sargādyadṛṣṭaṃ, tatsarvaṃ dharmahetukamiti //
dharmaḥ pañcaprakāraḥ-varṇadharma āśramadharmo guṇadharmo varṇāśramadharmo nimittadharma iti /
na kevalaṃ veda eva dharmamūlaṃ, kiṃ tarhi-
vedavidāṃ ca ye smṛtiśīle te api dharmamūle bhavataḥ te api vedāvirodhinī, tadvidāmityārambhāt / mūlaśabdaśceha dvābhyāmabhisambadhyamāno dvicanānto draṣṭavyaḥ / tacchabdena ṣaḍaṅgo vedo lakṣyate / smṛtirupanibanandhanaṃ manu-yama-vasiṣṭha-bhṛgvaṅgiro-bṛhaspatyuśano-bhāradvāja-gautapāpastamba-saṃvarta-vyāsa-śatātapa-
śaṅkha-likhita-hārīta-bodhāyana-yājñavalkya-pracetādibhiḥ kṛtam / śīlamanupanibaddhaḥ samācāraḥ kautukamaṅgalādiḥ bahutvātpratideśaṃ bhidyamānatvāccānupanibaddhaḥ / cakāro 'nuktasamuccayārthaḥ / yathā'ha manu--
iti //
idānīṃ pūrvapakṣīkaroti vedavidāṃ śīlaṃ dharmamūlaṃ na bhavati yataḥ-
kiñca-
atrāpi dharmamūlatvaṃ na prāpnotīti śeṣaḥ caśabdopādānāt / sahaḥśabdena balamucyate / yathā ca nāradaḥ-"saho balamihocyate"iti / tena śāstraṃ lokasaṃvyavahāraṃ cānavekṣya yat kriyate tat sāhasam /
kathaṃ punardharmavyatikramasāhasayoḥ bhedaḥ-viṣayābhilāṣeṇa yadayuktamācaryate, sa dharmavyatikramaḥ, krodhādyabhibhavena yat kriyate tat sāhasam //
atrottaramāha-
tuśabda- pakṣanivṛttyarthaḥ / dṛṣṭārtho dṛṣṭaprayojanaḥ tasmin dṛṣṭaprayojane śīlaṃ dharmamūlaṃ na bhavati / tathā ca
vasiṣṭhaḥ-"agṛhyamāṇakāraṇo dharmaḥ"iti / naitādvivacanaṃ, dṛṣṭārthe dharmavyatikramasāhase iti / tasmin gṛhyamāṇe"īdudet"ityādinā pragṛhyasaṃjñāyāṃ satyāṃ"dṛṣṭārthe avaradaurbalyāt"iti pāṭhaḥ prāpnoti / avaradaurbalyāt na varaḥ avaro nikṛṣṭaḥ dveṣādyabhibhūtaḥ aparamārthajñāna ityarthaḥ tasya daurbalyāt dharmādharmaparijñānāśakterityarthaḥ /
evaṃ smṛtipramāṇamuktvā adhunā ekārthopanipatitānāṃ vākyānāṃ parasparavirodhe sati kiṃ kravyamityāta āha-
tulyapramāṇaprāpitaḥ padārthastulyabalaḥ / tayoḥ parasparavirodhe sati vikalpo veditavyaḥ, ayaṃ vāyaṃ veti / nobhayaparityāgaḥ, ubhayoḥ pramāṇaprāpitatvāt / nānyataraparigrahaḥ, ekasmin gṛhyamāṇe dvitīyasyānarthakyaprasaṅgaḥ syāditi / kimudāharaṇaṃ-śrutau tāvat udite hotavyaṃ, anudite hotavyamityevamādi / smṛtāvapi,"nityamabhojyaṃ keśakīṭāvapannam"iti gautamaḥ /
iti manuḥ //
nanu-cātra sārmathyādeva vikalpaprasiddheḥ anarthakamidaṃ sūtraṃ samuccayastāvadatra na saṃbhatīti / na hyanudite hutvā punarudite hotuṃ śakyate, guṇabhūtakālavaśena pradhānasya homasyāvṛtteranyāyyatvāt / pradhānavaśavartino hi guṇāḥ, na guṇavaśavarti pradhānamiti /
evaṃ tarhi nyāyaprāptānuvādo 'yaṃ viśeṣārthaḥ / ko viśeṣaḥ ? tulyabalayoreva virodhe vikalpaḥ, atulyabalayostu bādha eveti / tena śrutismṛtyorvirodhe smṛtireva bādhyate /
nanu ca yadi vedaliṅgaprabhavatvābhyupagama eva smṛteḥ śrutyā sahātulyabalatvamupapādyate, tadā hi mantrārthavādavākyeṣvanyapareṣvapi yāni smārtadharmamabalabhūtāni liṅgāni"kumārā viśikhā iva"ityevamādīni teṣāṃ pratyakṣavedavākyavirodhe sati virodhivākyānumānavirodhāt durbalatvaṃ prasajyate / yadā tūtsannaśākhāpūrvikā smṛtirabhyupagame-yathā'hāpastambaḥ-"brāhmaṇoktā vidhayasteṣāmutsannāḥ pāṭhāḥ prayogādanumīyante"iti tadobhayośca vaidikatvāt tulyabalataiva prasajyate / na hyanumitasya vedavākyasya pratyakṣasya ca balābalaviśeṣo 'sti pratyakṣānumānaparicchinnāgnivaditi / syādetat yatra smṛtivacane vedavirodho 'sti tannaiva vedavākyānumāpakaṃ bhavati, kiṃ tarhi bhrāntyādiprabhavamevaitaditi / tacca na yuktaṃ, dharmaśāstrapraṇeturanāptatvābhyupagame aviśvāsaprasaṅgāt / yadāpi vedavadavicchinnapāraṃparyeṇāgatā smṛtirabhyupagamyate tadāpi tulyabalatvamupapadyata iti tatrāpi tannaivopapadyate /
atrocyate-atulyabalatvaṃ tāvat vedādīnāṃ sūtrārambhasārmathyādevāvagamyate / yadi hi tulyabalānyetāni syuḥ tadā virodhe vikalpaḥ sārmathyādeva siddhaḥ, kimanena sūtreṇeti tulyabalagrahaṇaṃ cānarthakaṃ syāditi / asminapi vedādyurbalataratvaṃ smṛterupapadyate / tatra liṅgaprabhavatvamupapadyate ityuktam / tenāyameva
pakṣoyuktaḥ vastu
ucyate-virodhe sata pramāṇānāṃ balābalacintā yujyate / yatra tu virodhābhāvaḥ tatra durbalopi naiva bādhyata iti / yastāvadupanītasya karmādhikāraḥ saḥ śrutyā naiva virudhyate, upanayanasya vedagrahaṇārthatvāt, tasya ca karmārthatvāt, na cāpūrvasaṃyogamantareṇa pradhānasiddhiḥ / yaccoktaṃ govardhestu śruticoditopi na kriyata iti, tadapi na kevalaṃ smṛtyā, kintu mantravarṇācca 'mā gāḥ pramāpayāśvān pramāpaya'; ityādi / ataḥ smṛtyā śrutirnaiva bādhyate / kecidutsannaśākhāpūrvikāṃ smṛtimāhuḥ / tadayuktam /
evamiyaṃ dharmapramāṇaparibhāṣoktā / idānīṃ smṛtyā yatpramīyate tadabhidhānārthamāha-
vedasya agnerācāryasya yamaniyamānāṃ vā samīpe nayanamupanayanam / tadaṣṭame varṣe, varṣagaṇanāsārmathyāt / nityo 'yamupanayanakālaḥ, kāmyāpatkalpayorūrdhvamabhidhānāt / kṣatriyavaiśyayorūrdhvamabhidhānāt śūdrasyaikajātitvādarthasiddhasyāpi brāhmaṇagrahaṇasya jātinimittatvaprasiddhyarthamārambhaḥ /
kāmāya hitaṃ kāmyaṃ tadupatpādanasamartham / pañcame navama iti vācye kramabhedaḥ anayorantarā kṣatriyavaiśyayoḥ kāmyakālaparigrahārthaḥ / tathā ca manuḥ-
rājño balārthinaṣṣaṣṭhe vaiśyasyārthārthino 'ṣṭame //
vedānuvacanaṃ samastavedānucanam / adṛṣṭārthamekadeśādhyāpanena guruḥ / tathā ca manuḥ-
iti //
dṛṣṭārthaṃ cedupādhyāyaḥ / tathāca vasiṣṭhaḥ-'yastvekadeśaṃ sa upādhyāyaḥ'; iti / cakārāt aṅgavyākhyātāpi / tathāca yāskaḥ-'ācārya ācārānācinoti, arthānācinoti, buddhiṃ vā'; iti / keciccakāraṃ pūrvasūtreṇa samuccayārthaṃ vyācakṣate / tenobhayakaraṇādevācāryaḥ / tathāca manuḥ-
iti //
nityo 'yaṃ kālaḥ, kāmyāpakatkalpayorūrdhvamabhidhānāt //
yadā tu nityakāmyayoḥ kenaciddurbhikṣādinā nimittenātikramaḥ syāt tadānīmāpatkalpamāha-
āṅtrābhividhyarthaḥ, sahaṣoḍasena varṣeṇeti, 'dvyadhikāyāḥ'; iti liṅgāt 'ṣoḍaśe sarvakāmam'; iti smṛtyantaradarśanācca /
ukta upanayanakālaḥ / idānīṃ tatsādhanābhidhitsayā'ha-
muñjavikārā mauñjī / mūrvā prasiddhā, tadvikārā maurvī / jyācāsau maurvī ceti samānādhikaraṇasamāsaḥ / tataśca dhanuṣo 'panīya grāhyā / sūtraṃ śaṇasūtram / ekaguṇā maurvī, itare trivṛtau / yathā'ha manuḥ-

jyāmaurvyordvitvavyāvṛttyarthaṃ kramagrahaṇam / kecidabhāve vaikalpikārthamiti varṇayanti / tathāca manuḥ-
nyāyasiddhe kramagrahaṇasyānyārthatvāditi //
śaṇādhikāraḥśāṇaḥ / kṣumā atasī,tadvikāraḥ kṣaumaḥ /
idānīṃ kāṣāyapakṣe niyamārthamāha-
vṛṣakaṣāyakṛtaṃ vārkṣaṃ tadeva brāhmaṇasya vāsaḥ //
idānīṃ daṇḍaguṇamāha-
apīḍitā vallīveṣṭanakīṭāgnyādibhiranupahatā ityarthaḥ / yūpavakrāḥ yūpavannatāgrā ityarthaḥ / saśalkāḥ satvacaḥ / asamāsāt sarva evaṃrūpāḥ, na tu yathāsaṅkhyam / tathā cāha manuḥ-
iti //
pramāṇaśabdaḥ pratyekaṃ sambadhyate / mūrdhapramāṇā brahmaṇasya, lalāṭapramāṇāḥ kṣatriyasya, nāsāgrapramāṇā
vaiśyasya / tathā ca manuḥ -

idānīṃ brahmacāriveṣamāha-
muṇḍo muṇḍitaśiraskaḥ / jaṭilaḥ sakeśaḥ / śikhā eva jaṭā yasya sa śikhājaṭaḥ / evaṃ muṇḍaśabdena samastamuṇḍanamucyate / cakāro vār'thaḥ pratyekamabhisambadhyate-muṇḍo vā jaṭilo vā śikhājaṭo veti / brāhmaṇakṣatriyavaiśyābhiprāyaṃ bahuvacanam / yathākramanivṛttyarthaṃ veti noktam / tathā ca manuḥ-
muṇḍo vā jaṭilo vā syādasya vā syācchikhājaṭaḥ //

brāhmaṇabhojanādau pravṛtto dravyahastaḥ pūrvamanucchiṣṭaḥ kenacitkāraṇenocchiṣṭasparśādaprayato bhavati, tadā taddravyaṃ bhūmau nidhāya sthāpayitvā'cāmet / tathā ca vasiṣṭhaḥ-

puruṣaśaucavivakṣāyāṃ dravyahastagrahaṇamanarthakam / ato dravyasya nidhānamātrādeva śuddhiḥ, puruṣasyācamanāt / yattu dravyasya smṛtyantare prokṣaṇamukta-'bhūmau nikṣipya prokṣaṇāddravyaṃ śuddhyati'; iti tadabhyavahāryapakvadravyaviṣayameva draṣṭavyam / kathaṃ punastulyasaṃhite sūtre viśeṣo 'vagamyate-nidhāyācacamanaṃ na punaranidhāyeti / ucyate-yadyanidhāyācamanamiṣṭaṃ syāttato 'dravyahasta ucchiṣṭa ācāmet'; ityetāvadeva vaktavyaṃ syāt, kiṃ nidhānena kriyata iti, tataḥ sūtrātirekānnidhānapakṣa evābhīṣṭa ityavagamyate / yattu manunoktaṃ-

tadanabhyavahāryadravyaviṣayaṃ draṣṭavyam / evaṃcābhyavahāryadravyasyāpakvasya kadalīphalādeḥ nidhānamātrādeva śuddhiḥ /
idānīṃ dravyaśuddhimāha-
dravyaśuddhiḥ parimārjanapradāhatakṣaṇanirṇejanāni
taijasādīnāṃ dravyāṇāṃ parimārjanādinā krameṇa śuddhiḥ / dravyatve siddhe teṣāṃ dravyavacanaṃ svakāryaniṣpādanasārmathyārtham / tataśca bhinnabhāṇḍādīnāṃ na śaucam / tejasā hetubhūtena yāni kriyante tāni taijasāni sauvarṇādīni / teṣāṃ taijasānāmucchiṣṭaliptānām / kuta etat ? mūtrādyupahatānāṃ smṛtyantare śuddhyantaravidhānāt / tathā cauśanasaṃ-'taijasānāṃ mūtrapurīṣaretaḥ kuṇapopahatānāṃ āvartanamullekhanaṃ bhasmanā triḥ saptakṛtvaḥ parimārjanam / ataijasānāmevaṃbhūtānāmutsargaḥ'; iti / tathā anyaśarīramaladūṣite kaṇvavacanamārabdham- 'śleṣmādyupahatānāmekaviṃśatiparimārjanacchuddhiḥ'; iti / tathācāspṛśyochiṣṭānāmauśanasaṃ vacanaṃ saṃgatamārabdham- 'anulomaśūdraśvakākopahatānāmullekhanaṃ pratilomeṣu spṛśyopahatānomakaviṃśatiparimarjanamaspṛśyopahatānāmāvartanam'; iti / tathā māṃsarudhiropahatānāṃ śaṅkhavacanamārabdhaṃ-'mṛdariṣṭakeṅgudabilvasarṣapakalkagomūtragomayādīni śaucadravyāṇi'; iti / tathā 'rajasvalāduṣṭānāmekadinaṃ pañcagavye nikṣipya ekaviṃśatiparimārjanācchuddhiḥ'; iti paiṭhīnasivacanam / evamanyeṣvapi smṛtyantareṣu malāntaradūṣiteṣu taijaseṣu śuddhyantarāṇyāmnātāni / atotrocchiṣṭaliptānāmeva kalpayituṃ nyāyyamiti / teṣāmucchiṣṭaliptānāṃ parimārjanaṃ bhasmanā paritaḥ sarvataḥ / mārttikānāṃ mṛnmayānāmaspṛśyopahatānām / kutaḥ? smṛtyantare viśeṣadarśanāt / tathośanaso vacanaṃ-'mṛnmayānāmucchiṣṭaliptānāmapamārjanamucchaṣṭaspṛṣṭānāṃ prokṣaṇam'; iti / tathā vasiṣṭhavacanam-
iti madyādidūṣitānāṃ tyāga uktaḥ / atotra caṇḍālādyupahatānāmeva kalpayituṃ nyāyyamiti / pradāhaḥ prakarṣeṇa dāhaḥ pūrvasvabhāvotpādanamityarthaḥ / dāravāṇāṃ āsanaśayanādīnāṃ aṇedhyādyupahatānāṃ takṣaṇaṃ tanūkaraṇaṃ yāvanmātramupahatam / aspṛśyaspṛṣṭānāṃ prokṣaṇam / kutaḥ ? 'prokṣaṇaṃ saṃhatānām'; iti manuvacanāt / prakṣālanaśakyānāṃ prakṣālanam / tāntavānāṃ tantumayānāṃ kārpāsādivikārāṇāṃ aspṛśyadūṣitānām /
taijasavacchuddhirupalādīnām / atideśaḥ smṛtyantaroktaśuddhyapekṣārthaḥ / upalānāṃ maṇīnāṃ tāvacchrūyate-
nirlepaṃ kāñcanaṃ bhāṇḍaṃ adbhireva viśuddhyati /
abjamaśmamayaṃ caiva rājataṃ cānupaskṛtam //
śaṅkhaśuktimaṇīnāṃ ca gomūtreṇodakena vā //
asthi hastidantādisaṃvyavahāryadravyāṇi / bhūmiḥ, gṛhādiḥ dāruvaditi prakṛtidravyeṇātideśaṃ bruvan etat jñāpayati-yat vikārasya śocamucyate prakṛtidravyasyāpi tadeva bhavatīti /
bhūmigrahaṇamasthinivṛttyartham / cakorāt smṛtyantaroktānyapi draṣṭavyāni / tathācoktaṃ vasiṣṭhena-
iti /
tathā ca manuḥ-
iti /
yathālepaṃ vikalpena samuccayena vā śaucaṃ kartavyam //
rajjuḥ darbhādiniṣpannaḥ / vidalaḥ vaṃśamayūrapakṣādiniṣpannaḥ carma vyāghracarmādi teṣāmaspṛśyaspṛṣṭānāṃ celavat vastravacchaucam /
idānīṃ 'dravyahasta ucchiṣṭo nidhāyācāmet'; ityuktaṃ, tadācamanavidhitsayā'ha-
prāṅmukha udaṅmukho vetīcchāto vikalpaḥ /
śucau deśe sthāne anupahate / evaṃ ca pādaprakṣālanamapyarthasiddhaṃ mā bhūt
aśuddhipādasambandhāddeśasyāpyaśucibhāva iti / tathā ca vakhiṣṭhaḥ- 'prakṣālya pādau pāṇo cā maṇibandhanāt'; iti / āsīna eva, nānyāvasthaḥ / tathāca vasiṣṭhaḥ-'vrajan tiṣṭhan śayānaḥ praṇato vā nācāmet'; iti / dākṣiṇaṃ bāhuṃ jānvormadhye kṛtvā / yajñopavītoti / yadi kadācit ayajñopavīti bhūtvāpyāste tathāpyācamane avaśyaṃ yajñopavītinā bhavitavyamiti / tathā cāpaspambaḥ-'upāsane gurūṇāṃ vṛddhānāmatithīnāṃ home japyakarmaṇi bhojana ācamane svādhyāye ca yajñopavīti syāt'; iti / ācamanāṅgatvenānyayajñopavītotpādanārthaṃ vā / tathā ca vasiṣṭhaḥ-

maṇiryasmindeśe badhyate sa maṇibandhaḥ / tasmādāmaṇibandhanātpāṇī prakṣālya vāgyatastūrṣṇīṃ hṛdayaspṛśo hṛdayaṃgamāḥ / apāṃparimāṇārthamidam / māṣanimajjanamātrāstāvatyo bhavanti / tathācāhośanā 'māṣanimajjanamātrā hṛdayaṃgamā bhavanti'; iti / triścaturvetyatra vikalpo vyavasthitaḥ- yadā 'āpaḥ punantu'; ityādimantramuktvā'camyate tadā catuḥ
anyatra tririti /
cakārāt mukhaṃ ca / abhyupasargo vidhyantaropasaṃgrahārthaḥ / tatrāha bhārgavaḥ-'oṣṭhau parimṛjyāttato mukhaṃ
parimṛjedagnāndhyāyaṃ stataḥ pādāvabhyukṣet viṣṇuṃ dhyān'iti //
khāni śīrṣaṇyāni nayananāsikākarṇāni / cakārāddhṛdayaṃ ca / tathāca manuḥ-
iti //
upopasargo vidhyantaropasaṃgrahārthaḥ tannośanā 'aṅguṣṭhopakaniṣṭikābhyāṃ nayane candrādityau dhyātvā tata upaspṛśya tarjanyaṅguṣṭhābhyāṃ nāsikāvakāśau prāṇān dhyātvā tata upaspṛśya kaniṣṭhikāṅguṣṭhābhyāṃ karṇau diśo dhyātvā tata upaspṛśyāṅguṣṭhena kevalena hṛdayamupaspṛśedātmānaṃ dhyāyan'; iti //
mūrdhani cet vaktavye dadyāditi grahaṇaṃ sarvāṅgulyartham /
na kevalamucchiṣṭasparśa evācamanaṃ, anyadapyācamananimittamidānīmāha-

gurugrahaṇamācāryādīnāmapyupalakṣaṇam / samānataḥ samyagānataḥ prahvaḥ / taṃ dhyātvā namaskāraṃ kṛtvetyarthaḥ / evañca tatrāpi 'ācāryatatputra'; ityasminnācāryagrahaṇaṃ gurvādīnāmapyupalakṣaṇam, teṣāmapi nāmadheyoccāraṇasya pratiṣiddhatvāt / tathāca smṛtyantaram-
yadi brūyāttu taṃ dhyātvā namaskṛtvā vadedatha //

adṛṣṭena guruṇā ājñāyāṃ dīyamānāyāṃ abhikramaṇaṃ tadabhimukhena gamanaṃ kuryādityarthaḥ //

upasaṃgrahaṇasyedānīṃ pratiprasavamāha-
tatrāpi tu-
vyavahārasamarthena pūrṇaṣoḍaśavarṣeṇetyarthaḥ / yuvatīnāṃ taruṇīnāṃ viproṣyāpi na kāryamityeke manyante na tu
uktaṃ 'agnīndhanabhaikṣacaraṇe'; iti / tatrāgnīndhanaṃ gṛhyebhya eva pṛthakpṛthagupalabhyata iti, bhaikṣacaraṇavidhimāha-
atraika āhuḥ-śūdraprāpaṇārtho 'yamārambhaḥ, 'praśastānāṃ svakarmasu'; ityanenāprāptatvāditi / na caitadyuktaṃ, 'vṛttiścennāntareṇa śūdrāt ityanenāpadi śūdrābhyanujñānasiddheḥ / na cānāpadyapi brahmacāriṇaḥ śūdrābhyanujñānamanena kalpayituṃ yuktaṃ, smṛtyantare atyantapratiṣiddhatvāt,'-
iti //
tena prathamakalpastāvat brahmacāriṇaḥ praśastebhya eva bhaikṣacaraṇaṃ, tadalābhe apraśastebhyaḥ, tadalābhe ācāryādibhyaḥ, sarvābhāve āpadi śūdrāditi sthitam //
sarvavarṇānarhatīti sārvavarṇikaṃ, sarveṣāṃ bhavatītyarthaḥ / sarvagrahaṇaṃ kṣatriyavaiśyaprāpaṇārthaṃ, anyathā brāhmaṇasyaiva pratigrahādhikārāt tasyaiva syāditi / varṇagrahaṇaṃ śūdrasyāpi prāpaṇārthaṃ asati varṇagrahaṇe sarvagrahaṇaṃ tayoreva syāditi tadarthaṃ varṇagrahaṇaṃ kṛtam / tena śūdrasyāprāptau tatprāpaṇārthaṃ varṇagrahaṇam /
dvipadasya bhikṣāṃ dehīti śabdasya prārthanāyāṃ dehītyasyāpi ca sārmathyāt prāptasyādau brāhmaṇena bhavacchabdaḥ prayoktavyaḥ, madhye kṣatriyeṇa, ante vaiśyena / bhavacchabdasya prātipadikatvātkevalasya ca prayogābhāvāt strīṇāṃ sakāśe tadāmantritavibhaktyantaḥ prayoktavyaḥ, bhavati bhikṣāṃ dehīti / puruṣasakāśe bhavan bhikṣāṃ dehīti / pretyupasargāt smṛtyantaroktamapi draṣṭavyam / tadapi kṣakārahikārau noccairvaktavyāviti / yathāha gṛhyasmṛtiḥ 'brāhmaṇo bhikṣeta bhavati bhikṣāṃ dehīti, bhavanmadhyayā rājanyo bhikṣāṃ bhavati dehīti, bhavadantyayā vaiśyo bhikṣāṃ dehi bhavati, kṣāṃ ca hiṃ ca na vardhayet'; iti / varṇagrahaṇaṃ śūdrasya mantraprāpaṇārthaṃ, tataśca trayāṇāmeva varṇānāmanyatamo mantro draṣṭavyaḥ / anyo vā racanāviśeṣaḥ kartavyaḥ /

teṣāṃ yo yaḥ prathamanirdiṣṭaḥ tatra tatra pariharet / anyatrālābhe pūrvaṃ pūrvaṃ parihṛtyāpi teṣāmeva sakāśe
tatkatha bhuñjītetyata āha-
vāgyatastūṣṇīṃ, tṛpyansaṃtoṣaṃ kurvan, pūrvamasaṃtuṣṭo 'pyannadarśanamātrādeva hṛṣyedityarthaḥ / tathāca smṛtyantaram-
dṛṣṭvā hṛṣyetprasīdecca pratinandecca sarvaśaḥ //
iti / alolupyamāno viśeṣaspṛhāṃ pariharannatibhojanaṃ varjayedityarthaḥ / tathāca smṛtyantaram-
anāyuṣyamanārogyarmasvagyaṃ cātibhojanam //
apuṇyaṃ lokavidviṣṭaṃ tasmāttatparivarjayet //
iti / athavā bhojanavidhimaparivarjayannityarthaḥ / tathāca smṛtyantare bhojanavidhirdraṣṭavyaḥ / samyaṅi#nadhāyodakaṃ prāśyetyarthaḥ / samupasargaḥ smṛtyantaroktamārgopasaṃgrahārthaḥ / tathā'hośanā-"satyaṃ tvartenetyādinodakaṃ pariṣicyāmṛtopastaraṇamityādinā prāśayet"iti / athavā-udakamiti kamaṇḍalurucyate, tat sannidhāya / tataśca brahmacāriṇo 'pi kamaṇḍaludhāraṇaṃ kartavyam / tathaiva manurapi mekhalādibhiḥ saha pratipattividhānāt brahmacāriṇaḥ kamaṇḍaludhāraṇaṃ jñāpayati-
iti / evaṃca tata evācamanaṃ kartavyaṃ, vacanasārmathyāt / ucchiṣṭasparśane na doṣaḥ / smṛtyantaroktaṃ vā draṣṭavyam / yathā'ha vasiṣṭhaḥ-
idānīṃ yadi brahmacārī guroḥ samyagvinayenāvatiṣṭheta tadānīṃ kiṃ kartavyamityata āha-
atha kiyantaṃ kālamevaṃ vartetetyāha-
ekavedamadhyeṣyamāṇo dvādaśavarṣāṇyabhihitarūpaṃ brahmacaryaṃ caret kuryāt / brahmacaryaśabdena yamaniyamakalāpa
ucyate, brahmārthatvāt //
prativedaṃ vā dvādaśavarṣāṇi brahmacaryaṃ caret //
sarveṣu vedeṣu yāvataiva kālenādhyayanamabhinirvartayet tāvantameva kālaṃ brahmacaryaṃ caret tasya tadarthatvāt / sarvagrahaṇaṃ yadyekamadhīyīta yadi vā dvau yadi vā sarvānityevamartham / tathāca manuḥ-
vedānadhītya vedau vā vedaṃ vāpi yathākramam //
vidyāsamāptau, na tu vratānām, gururācāryaḥ arthena prayojanena nimantryaḥ praṣṭavyaḥ kiṃ gurvarthe karavāṇīti //
tataḥ-
idānīṃ pitrādyanekagurusannidhāne kaḥ prathamaḥ pūjya ityata āha-
eke mātā śreṣṭheti manyante / itikaraṇātpitetyapare / anyathā mātaika ityeva siddhatvāt / kevalāt piturācāryaḥ pradhānaḥ / tathāca manuḥ-
kāmānmātā pitā cainaṃ yadutpādayato mithaḥ /
sambhūtiṃ tasya tāṃ vidyāt yadyonāvabhijāyate //
iti / yadi pitaivācāryo bhavati tadā pitā viśiṣyate / mātā sarveṣāṃ śreṣṭhā / tathāca vasiṣṭhaḥ-
ityatra pitṛśabdena pitaivācāryo yo bhavati sa eva gṛhyata iti //
iti maskarīye gautamabhāṣye dvitīyo 'dhyāyaḥ //
tṛtīyo 'dhyāyaḥ
evaṃ kṛtaniyamasya kṛtavidyasya ca-
tasyākhaṇḍitabrahmacaryasya / tathāca manuḥ-
iti /
evaṃ ca viplutasyopapātakaprāyaścittaṃ draṣṭavyam / śūdraparyudāsārthaṃ vā tadgrahaṇaṃ, āśramadharmābhidhānaṃ mā bhūttasyāpīti / vīpsārthaṃ vā tasya tasyeti, brāhmaṇasya kṣatriyasya vaiśyasya ceti /
tadgrahaṇamantareṇāpyadhikārādevaitatsiddhamiti cenna, smṛtyantarābhāsāśaṅkānivṛttyarthatvāt / evaṃ hi smṛtyantaraṃ pratibhāti-"eṣa vo 'bhihito dharmo brāhmaṇasya caturvidhaḥ"iti, tatra brāhmaṇasyaivāyaṃ caturvidho dharmaḥ itarayorekavidha ityāśaṅkā syāditi / tarhi tatkathamiti cet tatra brāhmaṇagrahaṇaṃ pradarśanārtham / tatkathaṃ gamyata iti cet trayāṇāmeva varṇānāṃ catvāra āśramā iti smṛtyantaradarśanāt / tathā cāpastambaḥ-"sarveṣāmupanayanaprabhṛti samānamācāryakule vāsaḥ sarveṣāmanūtsargo vidyāyā buddhvā karmāṇi yatkāmayettadārabheta"iti / eke bruvate,- tulyaphalatvādāśramavikalpaḥ / dvividhaṃ hi phalamabhyudayarūpaṃ niḥśreyasarūpaṃ ceti, tadanyatamenava labhyata iti / tathā ca śrutiḥ-"trayo dharmaskandhā yajño 'dhyayanaṃ dānamiti prathamastapa eva dvitīyastṛtīyamācāryakule vasanametānāruhya brahmalokaṃ gacchati brahmasaṃstho 'mṛtatvameti"iti / arthastu-trayo dharmasyāśrayā-, yajñādhyayanaṃ dānamiti gṛhasthanirdeśaḥ, tapa eveti vānaprasthaparivrājakayordharmaḥ, ācāryakulavasanaṃ brahmacāriṇaḥ / etānāruhyeti brahmacāryāśramaṃ, gṛhasthāśramaṃ, vānaprasthāśramaṃ, parivrājakāśramaṃ vā samyagāsthāyetyarthaḥ / yasteṣāṃ brahmasaṃstho brahmaniṣṭho
jñānī amṛtatvaṃ mokṣameti gacchatīti //
tataśca sarveṣāmapi brahmalokaprāptipratipādanāt, tulyaphalataivoktā / tathā jābālaśrutāvapi tulyaphalataiva śrūyate-'brahmacaryaṃ samāpya gṛhī bhavet / gṛhī bhūtvā vanī bhavet / vanī bhūtvā pravrajat / yadi vetarathā brahmacaryādeva pravrajet gṛhādvā vanādvā brahmalokaṃ gacchati'; iti / manurapyāha-
iti /
nanu tulyatve sati brahmacaryeṇaivobhayavidhaphalaprāpteritarāśramavidhānānarthakyaprasaṅgaḥ iti / ucyate- yo yasyānuṣṭhāne samarthaḥ tasya tadāśramapratipattyarthaṃ itarāśramavidhānamiti / janmāntaravāsanayā vā iṣṭāśramapratipattyartham / śrutirupi-"taṃ vidyākarmaṇī samanvārabhete pūrvaprajñā ca"iti / yāvajjīvaśrutirapi gṛhasthasyārthinaḥ śaktiviṣaye draṣṭavyā / evaṃ gṛhīte vyutthānaśrutirapyupapadyate-'evaṃ vai tamātmānaṃ viditvā putreṣaṇāyāśca vitteṣaṇāyāśca lokeṣaṇāyāśca vyutthāyātha bhikṣācaryaṃ caranti'; iti / itarathā hi bhikṣācaryamiti saṃnyāsopadeśo nopapadyata iti / jāyamānaśrutyāpi yajñādīnāmavaśyakartavyatā pratipādyate gṛhasthasya, na tu jāyamānasyaiva, ṛṇatrayasambandhasyātyantāsambhavāt 'brahmacaryādeva pravrajet'; iti śrutiviruddhatvāt 'so 'ta eva brahmacaryātpravrajati,'; 'yamicchettamāvaset'; ityādismṛteraviruddhatvācca / arthavādānāṃ ca kāryaśeṣatvāt / tataśca padārtho 'pyevaṃ grahītavyaḥ-gṛhastho jāyamānaḥ pūrvavāsanayā gārhasthyaṃ praviṣṭaḥ / brahmaṇagrahaṇaṃ kṣatriyavaiśyayorupalakṣaṇam / tribhiḥ ṝṇaiḥ sambadhyate-yajñena devebhya ṝṇī bhavatyato yajñaḥ kartavyaḥ / prajayā pitṛbhyaḥ ataḥ prajotpādanaṃ kartavyam / brahmacaryeṇa ṝṣibhyaḥ ataḥ parvādau brahmacaryarakṣaṇaṃ kartavyamiti / evaṃ gṛhīte sarvatra śrutismṛtyaravirodho bhavati / ekegrahaṇānna tu gautamaḥ, tasya tu samuccayo mataḥ / kathamavagamyate ?"aikāśramyaṃ tvācāryāḥ"iti bādhapakṣasyāpi paramatatvena nirdeśāt,"prāguttamāttraya āśramiṇaḥ"iti ca liṅgāt,prāguttamāśramāttrayasyābhāvāt / vikalpapakṣe gautamastāvadevaṃ manyate-
iti bhinnaphalatvenopadeśāt jābālaśrutāvapyanyatamamāruhyetyanuktvā etānāruhyeti samuccayābhiprāyeṇoktatvāt, brahmalokaprāpterapi samuccayaphalatvenopadiṣṭatvāt jābālaśrutāvapi prādhānyena pūrvaṃ samuccayapakṣasyaivābhihitatvāt, 'sarve 'pi kramaśaḥ'; ityasmin manuvākye 'piśabdasya samuccayārthatvāt, āpastambavākye 'pi teṣu sarveṣviti bahuvacanāt- naikasminneva vartamānaḥ kiṃ tu sarveṣveva vartamāna ityabhiprāyeṇoktatvāt, ṛṇatrayaśruterapi yathārtha evopapadyamānatvāt,"pūrvaprajñā ca"iti śruterapi vidyābhiprāyeṇopapadyamānatvāt, yāvajjīvaśruterapi"gṛhī vanaṃ praviśedyadi gṛhameva kāmayeta tadā yāvajjīvasagnihotraṃ juhuyāt"iti jābālaśrutivākye anityatvadarśanāt, asmin pakṣe vyatthānaśruterapi sutarāmupapadyamānatvāt,"caturthamāyuṣo bhāgaṃ"ityanenāpi manunā samuccayapakṣamevāśrityoktatvāt, samuccayapakṣa eva śreyāniti / ata eva vikalpabādhapakṣau paramatatvenopanyastau / evañca -"yamicchettamāvaset"ityādivākyāni vikalpācāryadarśanenoktānīti draṣṭavyāni / asamartho yaḥ samuccayānuṣṭhāne andhapaṅgutvādidoṣeṇa niḥsvatvādinā vā tena vikalpapakṣo 'pyāśrayaṇīyaḥ ityabhiprāyeṇa bruvata ityarthasiddhasyāpyupanyāsaḥ /
ke punasta āśramā ityata āha-
brahmacaryaṃ caratīti, brahmaṇa eva vā viṣaye niḥspṛhaścaratīti, brahmacārī / gṛhaṃ patnī tatsaṃyogādagṛhasthaḥ / bhikṣāśīlatvādibhakṣuḥ / vikhanasā proktaṃ śāstraṃ vaikhānasaṃ tadvidhinā vartata iti vaikhānasaḥ / visamāsa eṣāmeva
pṛthaktvajñāpanārthaḥ, yathā'hośanā-'dvau brahmacāriṇāvupakurvāṇo naiṣṭhikaśceti, dvau vaikhānasau sapatnīko vipatnīkaśceti, dvau saṃnyāsinau bhikṣusanyāsī vedasanyāsī ceti, bahudhā gṛhasthaḥ śālīnayāyāvarādibhedena'; ityādi / nanu ca smṛtyantare vaikhānasamabhidhāya bhikṣurityuktaḥ iha kimarthaṃ kramabheda iti / ucyate 'prāguttamāstraya āśramiṇaḥ'; ityatra vaikhānasavarjanārthaḥ kramabhedaḥ / tasya grāmapraveśanapratiṣedhādeva siddhamiti cet na, arthināmaraṇyagamanasyāpi sambhavāt tathāca smṛtyantaram-

kecittu-
caturṇāmapyāśramāṇāṃ gṛhasthaḥ kāraṇaṃ, aprajanatvāditareṣāṃ brahmacāryādīnām / vaikhānasārthā hetūktiḥ, brahmacāriṇo brahmacaryarakṣaṇādeva siddhatvādibhakṣorapyūrdhvaretastvavidhānāt / evaṃ ca vaikhānasasya sapatnīkatvapakṣe 'pi brahmacaryarakṣaṇaṃ kartavyam / adhikārādeva siddhe 'teṣāṃ'; grahaṇaṃ gṛhasthotpannānāmeva teṣāṃ dharme ādhikāra ityevamartham / tathāca śātātapaḥ-
idānīmāśramadharmeṣu krameṇa vaktavyeṣu prāpteṣu sarvāśramasāmyādupakurvāṇasya pūrvamuktvā naiṣṭhikasya krameṇa prāptaṃ vaktumāha-
tatropanayanaprakareṇa yadagnīndhanādyuktaṃ tadasyāpi bhavatītyatideśaḥ / nanu ca naiṣṭikasyaivedaṃ nopakurvāṇasyeti kathaṃ jñāyata iti ? ucyate-upakurvāṇasyoktatvāt, gṛhasthabhikṣuvaikhānasānāṃ vakṣyamāṇatvāt, naiṣṭikasyaiva bhavatīti / tarhi brahmacārigrahaṇaṃ kimartamiti cet yenopakurvāṇavratamanuṣṭhitaṃ tasyaiva
naiṣṭhikatvasyādhikāra ityevamartham / atideśāt upakurvāṇavratameva naiṣṭhikasyāpyanuṣṭātavyamityuktvā idānīmasya viśeṣavidhimāha-
ācāryapāratantryaṃ taccittānuvidhāyitvaṃ ā maraṇāt kartavyam //

kiṃ punarasyāśramasya phalamityata āha-
evaṃ yathopadeśaṃ vartamāno brahmalokaṃ brahmaṇaḥ sthānamavāpnoti sa cejjitendriyo bhavati / brahmacaryarakṣaṇopadeśāt upasthendriyasyoktatvāt idaṃ cakṣurādiviṣayaṃ draṣṭavyam / yathā'ha manuḥ-
iti /
uttareṣāmapyetadeva pradhānamityevamarthaṃ phalāvasāne vidhānam //
idānīmanyeṣāmapi sāmānyadharmamāha-
nanu ca nityasyaiva tyāgo yuktaḥ upavītaśabdena nyāsaviśeṣo 'bhidhīyate-
uddhṛte dakṣiṇe pāṇāvupavītyucyate budhaiḥ //
iti //
yathārthamupavītaṃ yajñopavītam / asya yajñādhikārābhāvāt /
na kuṇḍyāṃ nodake saṅge na cele na tripuṣkare //
nāgāre nāsane nānne yasya syānmokṣavittu saḥ //
iti kuṇḍyādīnāṃ tyāgopadeśāt / jābālaśrutāvapi-'nakhāni nikṛtya yajñopavītaṃ visṛjya'; iti yajñopavītasya
tyāgopadeśācceti //
ucyate-prathamaṃ tāvadyaduktaṃ yajñādhikārābhāvāt iti tatra yāgaśabdo devapūjanādāvapi vartate devapūjanaṃ tvasya dhyānena paramātmapūjanāmastyeva kutaḥ ?
iti smṛtyantaradarśanāt autmayāga evādhikārāt / tathāca śrūyate śrutau-'dharmādharmau havirmanaḥsruvaḥ prāṇo 'dhvaryurindriyāṇyudgātāraḥ śabdādayo hotā etai ṛtvigbhistena sruveṇa taddhaviraharaharyatinā paramātmanyagnau hotavyam'; iti / ato yogādhikārasadbhāvādadoṣaḥ / yaccoktam- 'na kuṇḍyāṃ nodake saṅgaḥ'; iti tatrāpi kuṇḍikādīnāṃ vaicitryavarjanārthaḥ saṅgasyaiva parityāgaḥ, na kuṇḍikādeḥ / kutaḥ ? tatraiva
'yajñopavītyudakakamaṇḍaluhastaḥ'; iti vakṣyamāṇatvāt / tatra 'sarvāśrayāṇāṃ dharmiṣṭhaṃ'; iti sarvāśramādhikārāt sāmānyatvena vartamāno 'pi viśeṣadharmeṇa bādhyata iti cet, na, yadi sarvāśramādhikārastatreṣyate tatra prakaraṇe vākyārthaghaṭanārthaṃ 'yajñopavītyudakakamaṇḍaluhastatvam'; iti bhāvapratyayenaivāvakṣyat 'paiśunamatsarābhimānāhaṃkārānārjavātmastavaparagarhadambhalobhakrodhamohavivarjanaṃ sarvāśramāṇāṃ dharmiṣṭham'; iti pūrvamuktvā tataścābhāvapratyayena viśeṣoddeśena 'yajñopavītyudakakamaṇḍaluhastaḥ'; iti nirdeśaḥ sarvāśramādhikāranivṛttyartha iti jñātuṃ śakyate / tatastatra sarvāśramādhikārābhāvāt pūrvāparavirodhaprasaṅgo mā bhūditi 'na kuṇḍyāṃ nodake saṅgaḥ'; iti saṅgamātrasyaiva tyāgaḥ kriyata iti grahītuṃ śakyata eveti /
bhikṣuranicaya iti vaktavye dharmāsyādāvabhidhānaṃ nityasyāgnihotradārāderapi tyāgārtham / evaṃ ca gārhasthyādeva yaḥ pravrajet tena śrautasya ca smārtasya cāgneḥ dāraputraprapañcayajñādisahitasya tyāgaḥ
'uttareṣāṃ caitadavirodhi'; ityanena brahmacāriṇaḥ uktena brahmacaryarakṣaṇenāsyāpi siddherūrdhvaretograhaṇaṃ yathā yathā retasaḥ kṣayo bhavati tathā tathopāyaḥ kartavya ityevamartham / upāyaścālpānnābhyavahārādi / yathā cāha bhagavānvāsudevaḥ-
iti / tathālpānnāmyavahārābhiprāyeṇa smṛtyantare 'pyuktam 'aṣṭau grāsā munerbhakṣaḥ'; ityādi / evaṃca brahmacāriṇaḥ saṃpūrṇabhojane na doṣaḥ / tathā ca smṛtyantaram-
iti /
varṣāsviti bahuvacanāt grāmādgrāmāntaraṃ caturṣu māseṣu na gacchedityarthaḥ / ekatrāpi vasanna caṅkramaṇaprayāsaḥ syāditi śīlagrahaṇam /
bhikṣā bhikṣyamāṇatvādannaṃ vāsaḥ kamaṇḍalvādiḥ, tadarthaṃ grāmaṃ gacchet arthāccheṣaṃ kālamaraṇye devāyatanādau tiṣṭhediti siddham //
brahmacāribhikṣākāle prāpta āha-
jaghanyaṃ bhojanakriyātaḥ paścādityarthaḥ / tathāca manuḥ-
brahmacāriprakaraṇe 'vāgbāhūdarasaṃyataḥ'; ityanenaiva siddhe atiśayārthaṃ punarvacanam / ato vāksaṃyamo maunam, anyatra svādhyāyajapapathipraśnadharmayogapraśnebhyaḥ-
idānīṃ 'anicayo bhikṣuḥ'; ityanena sarvasyaipacayikadravyasya parityāge sati pratiprasavaḥ kriyate-
kaupīnāmiti nagnatocyate / tadāvaraṇamātraṃ vāsaḥ paridadhyāt / evaṃ ca praśastadvijātibhyastāvanmātrapratigrahe na doṣa / tataśca-
abhayaṃ sarvabhūtebhyo datvā yastu nivartate //
hanti jātānajātāṃśca pratigṛhṇāti yaḥsadā //
iti smṛtyantare yaddoṣasaṃkīrtanaṃ tadasmādanyatreti draṣṭavyam //
eke manyante pratigrahadoṣaparihārārthaṃ prahīṇaṃ yadrathyādau tyaktaṃ tatprakṣālya paridadhyāt nirṇijyeti pratyātmikaśaucaprāpaṇārtham //
oṣadhayaḥ phalapākāntāḥ / apuṣpeṇa ye phalavantaste vanaspatayaḥ / ubhayagrahaṇena sarve sthāvarā api gṛhyante / teṣāmaviprayuktaṃ tato 'napagataṃ śākhāpatrādi na gṛhṇīyāt 'hiṃsānugrahayoranārambhī'; ityanena siddhamiti
dhruvaśīlatvopadeśādvarṣābhyo 'nyatra kāmacāre prāpte āha-
ṛtuśabdena varṣā evocyante / apagate ṛtau dvitīyāṃ rātriṃ grāme na vaset / ekasmingrāme dinadvayaṃ na vasedityarthaḥ /
jaṭilapratiṣedhārtha ārambhaḥ / icchāto vikalpaḥ /
bījānāṃ vrīhyādīnāṃ vadhaṃ avahananādi na kuryāt //
sarvaprāṇiṣu madhyasthaḥ syāt ātmaparapakṣavibhāgavarjaka ityarthaḥ //
brahmacāriprakaraṇe hiṃsāmityanenaiva siddhe atiśayārthamidaṃ punarvacanam /
bhikṣoruktvā idānīṃ vaikhānasadharmamāha-
mūlaphalamapi grāmyaṃ na bhakṣayet //
grāmyānnasādhanāḥ gṛhasthasya pañca mahāyajñāḥ / asya cāgrāmyāhārapratiṣedhāttannivṛttirmā bhūdityārambhaḥ /
tathāca manuḥ-
jaṭilaḥ keśī / jaṭila eva syāditi niyamārtha ārambhaḥ / cīraṃ darbhādiniṣpannam /
mūlaphalamapi gatasaṃvatsaraṃ na bhuñjīta / tathāca manuḥ-'tyajedāśvayuje māsi'; ityādi / evaṃca
saṃvatsaramātranicayaḥ siddhaḥ //
vaikhānasasyoktvā idānīmekīyamatenāśramabādhapakṣaṃ vaktukāma āha-
ekāśrame bhavamaikāśramyam / tuśabdo 'vadhāraṇe / gārhasthasyeti karmaṇi ṣaṣṭhī / gārhasthyamevācāryā icchanti /
iti maskarīye gautamabhāṣye tṛtīyo 'dhy
