smṛtāpi taruṇātapaṃ karuṇayā harantī nṛṇām abhaṅguratanutviṣāṃ valayitā śatair vidyutām/ kalindagirinandinītaṭasuradrumālambinī madīyamaticumbinī bhavatu kāpi kādambinī//
śrīmajjñāneṃdrabhikṣor adhigatasakalabrahmavidyāprapañcaḥ kāṇādīrākṣapādīr api gahanagiro yo mahendrādavedīt/ devādevādhyagīṣṭa smaraharanagare śāsanaṃ jaiminīyaṃ śeṣāṅkaprāptaśeṣāmalabhaṇitir abhūt sarvavidyādharo yaḥ//
pāṣāṇād api pīyūṣaṃ syandate yasya līlayā/ taṃ vande perubhaṭṭākhyaṃ lakṣmīkāntaṃ mahāgurum//
nimagnena kleśair mananajaladher antarudaraṃ mayonnīto loke lalitarasagaṅgādharamaṇiḥ/ harann antardhvāntaṃ hṛdayam adhirūḍho guṇavatām alaṃkārān sarvān api galitagarvān racayatu//
pariṣkurvantv arthān sahṛdayadhurīṇāḥ katipaye tathāpi kleśo me katham api gatārtho na bhavitā/ timīndrāḥ saṃkṣobhaṃ vidadhatu payodheḥ punar ime kim etenāyāso bhavati viphalo mandaragireḥ//
nirmāya nūtanam udāharaṇānurūpaṃ kāvyaṃ mayātra nihitaṃ na parasya kiṃcit/ kiṃ sevyate sumanasāṃ manasāpi gandhaḥ kastūrikājananaśaktibhṛtā mṛgeṇā//
mananataritīrṇavidyārṇavo jagannāthapaṇḍitanarendraḥ rasagaṅgādharanāmnīṃ karoti kutukena kāvyamīmāṃsām rasāgaṅgādharanāmā saṃdarbho 'yaṃ ciraṃ jayatu/ kiṃ ca kulāni kavīnāṃ nisargasamyañci rañjayatu//
tatra kīrtiparamāhlādagururājadevatāprasādādyanekaprayojanakasya kāvyasya vyutpatteḥ kavisahṛdayayor āvaśyakatayā guṇālaṃkārādibhir nirūpaṇīye tasmin viśeṣyatāvacchedakaṃ taditarabhedabuddhau sādhanaṃ ca tallakṣaṇaṃ tāvan nirūpyate--
ramaṇīyatā ca lokottarāhlādajanakajñānagocaratā/ lokottaratvaṃ cāhlādagataś camatkāratvāparaparyāyo 'nubhavasākṣiko jātiviśeṣaḥ/ kāraṇāṃ ca tadavacchinne bhāvanāviśeṣaḥ punaḥpunar anusaṃdhānātmā/ "putras te jātaḥ," "dhanaṃ te dāsyāmi" iti vākyārthadhījanyasyāhlādasya na lokottaratvam/ ato na tasmin vākye kāvyatvaprasaktiḥ/ itthaṃ ca camatkārajanakabhāvanāviṣayārthapratipādakaśabdatvam, yatpratipāditārthaviṣayakabhāvanātvaṃ camatkārajanakatāvacchedakaṃ tattvam, svaviśiṣṭajanakatāvacchedakārthapratipādakatāsaṃsargeṇā camatkāratvavattvam eva vā kāvyatvam iti phalitam/ yat tu prāñcaḥ "adoṣau saguṇau sālaṃkārau śabdārthau kāvyam" ity āhuḥ, tatra vicāryate-- śabdārthayugalaṃ na kāvyaśabdavācyam, mānābhāvāt/ kāvyam uccaiḥ paṭhyate, kāvyād artho 'vagamyate, kavyaṃ śrutam artho na jñātaḥ, ityādiviśvajanīnavyavahārataḥ pratyuta śabdaviśeṣasyaiva kāvyapadārthatvapratipatteś ca/ vyavahāraḥ śabdamātre lakṣaṇayopapādanīya iti cet, syād apy evam, yadi kāvyapadārthatayā parābhimate śabdārthayugale kāvyaśabdaśakteḥ pramāpakaṃ dṛḍhataraṃ kim api pramāṇāṃ syāt/ tad eva tu na paśyāmaḥ/ vimatavākyaṃ tv aśraddheyam eva/ itthaṃ cāsati kāvyaśabdasya śabdārthayugalaśaktigrāhake pramāṇe, prāg uktād vyavahārataḥ śabdaviśeṣe siddhyantīṃ śaktiṃ ko nāma nivārayitum īṣṭe/ etena vinigamanābhāvād ubhayatra śaktir iti pratyuktam/ tadevaṃ śabdaviśeṣasyaiva kāvyapadārthatve siddhe tasyaiva lakṣaṇaṃ vaktuṃ yuktam, na tu svakalpitasya kāvyapadārthasya/ eṣaiva ca vedapurāṇādilakṣaṇeṣv api gatiḥ/ anyathā tatrāpīyaṃ duravasthā syāt/ yat tv āsvādodbodhakatvam eva kāvyatvaprayojakaṃ tacca śabde cārthe cāviśiṣṭam ity āhuḥ, tan na/ rāgasyāpi rasavyañjakatāyā dhvanikārādisakalālaṃkārikasaṃmatatvena prakṛte lakṣaṇīyatvāpatteḥ/ kiṃ bahunā nāṭyāṅgānāṃ sarveṣām api prāyaśas tathātvena tatvāpāttir durvāraiva/ etena rasodbodhasamarthasyaivātra lakṣyatvam ity api parāstam/ api ca kāvyapadapravṛttinimittaṃ śabdārthayor vyāsaktam, pratyekaparyāptaṃ vā/ nādyaḥ/ eko na dvāv iti vyavahārasyeva ślokavākyaṃ na kāvyam iti vyavahārasyāpatteḥ/ na dvitīyaḥ/ ekasmin padye kāvyadvayavyavahārāpatteḥ/ tasmād vedaśāstrapurāṇalakṣaṇasyeva kāvyalakṣaṇasyāpi śabdaniṣṭhataivocitā/ lakṣaṇe guṇālaṅkārādiniveśo 'pi na yuktaḥ/ "uditaṃ maṇḍalaṃ vidhoḥ" iti kāvye dūtyabhisārikāvirahiṇyādisamudīrite 'bhisaraṇavidhiniṣedhajīvanābhāvādipareḥ "gato 'stam arkaḥ" ityādau cāvyāptyāpatteḥ/ na cedam akāvyam iti śakyaṃ vaditum/ kāvyatayā parābhimatasyāpi yathā vaktuṃ śakyatvāt/ kāvyajīvitaṃ camatkāritvaṃ cāviśiṣṭam eva/ guṇatvālaṅkāratvāder ananugamāc ca/ duṣṭa kāvyam iti vyavahārasya bādhakaṃ vinā lākṣaṇikatvāyogāc ca/ na ca saṃyogābhāvavān vṛkṣaḥ saṃyogītivad aṃśabhedena/ doṣarahitaṃ duṣṭam iti vyavahāre bādhakaṃ nāstīti vācyam/ "mūle mahīrūho vihaṃgamasaṃyogī, na śākhāyām" iti pratīter ivedaṃ padyaṃ pūrvārdhe kāvyam uttarārdhe tu na kāvyam iti svarasavāhino viśvajanīnānubhavasya virahād avyāpyavṛttitāyā api tasyāyogāt/ śauryādivadātmadharmāṇāṃ guṇānām, hārādivad upaskārakāṇām alaṃkārāṇāṃ ca śarīraghaṭakatvānupapatteś ca/ yat tu "rasavad eva kāvyam" iti sāhityadarpaṇe nirṇītam, tan na/ vastvalaṃkārapradhānānāṃ kāvyānām akāvyatvāpatteḥ/ na ceṣṭāpattiḥ, mahākavisaṃpradāyasyākulībhāvaprasaṅgāt/ tathā ca jalapravāhaveganipatanotpatanabhramaṇāni kavibhir varṇitāni kapibālādivilasitāni ca/ na ca tatrāpi yathākathaṃcit paramparayā rasasparśo 'sty eveti vācyam/ īdṛśarasasparśasya "gauś calati", "mṛgo dhāvati" ityādāv atiprasaktatvenāprayojakatvāt/ arthamātrasya vibhāvānubhāvavyabhicāryanyatamatvād iti dik/ tasya ca kāraṇaṃ kavigatā kevalā pratibhā/ sā ca kāvyaghaṭanānukūlaśabdārthopasthitiḥ/ tadgataṃ ca pratibhātvaṃ kāvyakāraṇatāvacchedakatayā siddho jātiviśeṣa upādhirūpaṃ vākhaṇḍam/ tasyāś ca hetuḥ kvacid devatāmahāpuruṣaprasādādijanyam adṛṣṭam/ kvacic ca vilakṣaṇavyutpattikāvyakaraṇābhyāsau/ na tu trayam eva/ bālādes tau vināpi kevalān mahāpuruṣaprasādād api pratibhotpatteḥ/ na tatra tayor janmāntarīyayoḥ kalpanaṃ vācyam/ gauravān mānābhāvāt kāryasyānyathāpy upapatteś ca/ loke hi balavatā pramāṇenāgamādinā sati kāraṇātānirṇāye paścād upasthitasya vyabhicārasya vāraṇāya janmāntarīyam anyathānupapattyā kāraṇaṃ dharmādharmādi kalpyate/ anyathā tu vyabhicāropasthityā pūrvavṛttakāraṇatānirṇāye bhramatvapratipattir eva jāyate/ nāpi kevalam adṛṣṭam eva kāraṇam ity api śakyaṃ vaditum/ kiyantaṃcit kālaṃ kāvyaṃ kartum aśaknuvataḥ katham api saṃjātayor vyutpattyabhyāsayoḥ pratibhāyāḥ prādurbhāvasya darśanāt/ tatrāpy adṛṣṭasyāṅgīkāre prāg api tābhyāṃ tasyāḥ prasakteḥ/ na ca tatra pratibhāyāḥ pratibandhakam adṛṣṭāntaraṃ kalpyam iti vācyam/ tādṛśāneka sthalagatādṛṣṭadvayakalpanāpekṣayā kḷptavyutpattyabhyāsayor eva pratibhāhetutvakalpane lāghavāt/ ataḥ prāguktasaraṇir eva jyāyasī/ tādṛśādṛṣṭasya tādṛśavyutpattyabhyāsayoś ca pratibhāgataṃ vailakṣaṇyaṃ kāryatāvacchedakam, ato na vyabhicāraḥ/ pratibhātvaṃ ca kavitāyāḥ kāraṇātāvacchedakaṃ, pratibhāgatavailakṣaṇyam eva vā vilakṣaṇakāvyaṃ pratīti nātrāpi saḥ/ na ca sator api vyutpatyabhyāsayor yatra na pratibhotpattis tatrānvayavyabhicāra iti vācyam/ tatra tayos tādṛśavailakṣaṇye mānābhāvena kāraṇatāvacchedakānavacchinnatvāt/ pāpaviśeṣasya tatra pratibandhakatvakalpanād vā na doṣaḥ/ pratibandhakābhāvasya ca kāraṇatā samuditaśaktyāditrayahetutāvādinaḥ śaktimātrahetutāvādinaś cāviśiṣṭā/ prativādinā mantrādibhiḥ kṛte katipayadivasavyāpini vākstambhe vihitānekaprabandhasyāpi kaveḥ kāvyānudayasya darśanāt/ taccottamottamottamamadhyamādhamabhedāc caturdhā/ śabdārthau yatra guṇībhāvitātmānau kamapyartham abhivyaṅktas tad ādyam//
kamapīti camatkṛtibhūmim/ tenātigūḍhasphuṭavyaṅgyayor nirāsaḥ/ aparāṅgavācyasiddhyaṅgavyaṅgyasyāpi camatkāritayā tadvāraṇāya guṇībhāvitātmānāv iti svāpekṣayā vyaṅgyaprādhānyābhiprāyakam/ udāharaṇam-- śayitā savidhe 'pyanīśvarā saphalīkartum aho manorathān/ dayitā dayitānanāmbujaṃ daramīlannayanā nirīkṣayate//
atrālambanasya nāyakasya, savidhaśayanākṣiptasya rahaḥsthānāder uddīpanasya ca vibhāvasya, tādṛśanirīkṣaṇāder anubhāvasya, trapautsukyādeś ca vyabhicāriṇaḥ, saṃyogād ratir abhivyajyate/ ālambanādīnāṃ svarūpaṃ vakṣyate/ na ca yady ayaṃ śayitaḥ syāt tadāsyānanāmbujaṃ cumbeyam iti nāyikecchāyā eva vyaṅgayatvam atreti vācyam/ manorathān saphalīkartum asamarthetyanena manorathāḥ sarve 'syā hṛdi tiṣṭanti iti pratīteḥ svaśabdena manorathapadena sāmānyākāreṇa tādṛśecchāyā api nivedanāt/ na ca manorathapadena manorathatvākāreṇā sāmānyecchāyā abhidhāne 'pi cumbeyam iti viṣayaviśeṣaviśiṣṭecchātvena vyaṅgyatve kiṃ bādhakam iti vācyam/ camatkāro na syād ityasyaiva bādhakatvāt/ na hi viśeṣākāreṇa vyaṅgyo 'pi sāmānyākāreṇābhihito 'rthaḥ sahṛdayānāṃ camatkṛtim utpādayitum īṣṭe/ katham api vācyavṛttyanāliṅgitasyaiva vyaṅgyasya camatkāritvenālaṃkārikaiḥ svīkārāt/ cumbanecchāyā ratyanubhāvatayaiva sundaratvena tadavyañjane cumbāmīti śabdabalāc cumbanecchāvad acamatkāritvāc ca/ evaṃ trapāyā api na prādhānyena vyaṅgyatvam/ anuvādyatāvacchedakatayā pratītāyāṃ tasyāṃ mukhyavākyārthatvāyogāt/ na ca daramīlannayanātvaviśiṣṭanirīkṣaṇaṃ vidheyam iti nānuvādyatāvacchedakatvaṃ tasyā iti vācyam/ evam api nayanagatadaramīlanasya tatkāryatve 'pi daramīlannayanātvaviśiṣṭanirīkṣaṇasya ratimātrakāryatvāt/ trapāyā eva mukhyatvena vyaṅgyatve nirīkṣaṇokter anatiprayojanakatvāpatteḥ/ vācyavṛttyā rater anubhāve nirīkṣaṇo trapāyā anubhāvasya daramīlanasyeva vyañjanayā tasyāṃ tasyā api guṇībhāvapratyayaucityāt/ yathā vā-- gurumadhyagatā mayā natāṅgī nihatā nīrajakorakeṇa mandam/ darakuṇḍalatāṇḍavaṃ natabhrūlatikaṃ mām avalokya ghūrṇitāsīt//
atra ghūrṇitāsīd ityanenāsamīkṣyakārin kimidam anucitaṃ kṛtavān asīty arthasamvalito 'marṣaś carvaṇāviśrāntidhāmatvāt prādhānyena vyajyate/ tatra śabdo 'rthaś ca guṇaḥ/ yathā vā-- "talpagatāpi ca sutanuḥ śvāsāsaṅga na yā sehe/ samprati sā hṛdayagataṃ priyapāṇiṃ mandam ākṣipati//" idaṃ ca padyaṃ mannirmitaprabandhagatatvena pūrvasākāṅkṣam iti diṅmātreṇa vyākhyāyate --- yā navavadhūḥ palyaṅkaśayitā śvāsasyāsaṅgamātreṇāpi saṃkucad aṅgalatikābhūt sā samprati prasthānapūrvarajanyāṃ pravatsyatpatikā priyeṇa saśaṅkena samarpitaṃ hṛdi pāṇiṃ navavadhūjātisvābhāvyād ākṣipati, paraṃ tu mandam/ atra śanaiḥ svasthānaprāpaṇātmanā mandākṣepeṇa ratyākhyaḥ sthāyī saṃlakṣyakramatayā vyajyate/ upapādayiṣyate ca sthāyyādīnām api saṃlakṣyakramavyaṅgayatvam/ amum eva ca prabhedaṃ dhvanim āmananti/ yat tu citramīmāṃsāyām appayyadīkṣitaiḥ "niḥśeṣacyutacandanam" iti padyaṃ dhvanyudāharaṇaprasaṅge vyākhyātam-- uttarīyakarṣaṇena candana-cyutir ityanyathāsiddhiparihārāya niḥśeṣagrahaṇam/ tataś candanacyuteḥ snānasādhāraṇyavyāvartanena saṃbhogacihnoddhāṭanāya taṭagrahaṇam/ snāne hi sarvatra candana cyutiḥ syāt, tava tu stanayos taṭa upari bhāga eva dṛśyate/ iyam āśleṣakṛtaiva/ tathā nirmṛṣṭarāgo 'dhara ity atra tāmbūlagrahaṇavilambāt prācīnarāgasya kiṃcin mṛṣṭatety anyathāsiddhiparihārāya nirmṛṣṭarāga iti rāgasya niḥśeṣamṛṣṭatoktā/ punaḥ snānasādhāraṇyavartanena saṃbhogacihnodghāṭanāyādhara iti viśiṣya grahaṇam/ uttaroṣṭhe sarāge 'dharoṣṭhamātrasya nirmṛṣṭarāgatā cumbanakṛtaiva ityādinā, "idam api dhvaner udāharaṇam" ityantena sandarbheṇa/ "taṭādighaṭitā vākyārthāḥ snānavyāvṛttidvārā saṃbhogāṅgānām āśleṣacumbanādīnāṃ pratipādanena pradhānavyaṅgyavyañjane sāhāyakam ācaranti iti, tad etad alaṃkāraśāstratattvānavabodhanibandhanam/ prācīnasakalagranthaviruddhatvād upapattivirodhāc ca/ tathā hi-- pañcamollāsaśeṣe "niḥśeṣetyādau gamakatayā yāni candanacyavanādīny upāttāni tāni kāraṇāntarato 'pi bhavanti/ yataś cātraiva snānakāryatvenopāttānīti nopabhoga eva pratibaddhānīty anaikāntikāni iti kāvyaprakāśakṛtoktam/ tathā tatraiva tena-- "bhama dhammia vīsattho so suṇao ajja mālido teṇa/ golāṇaikacchakuḍaṅgavāsiṇā dariasīheṇa//" ityādau liṅgajaliṅgijñānarūpeṇānumānena vyaktiṃ gatārthayato vyaktivivekakṛto mataṃ pratyācakṣāṇena vyabhicāritvenāsiddhatvena ca saṃdihyamānād api liṅgād vyañjanam abhyupagatam/ ittham eva ca dhvanikṛtāpi prathamoddyote/ evaṃ ca vyañjakānāṃ sādhāraṇyaṃ pratipādayatāṃ prāmāṇikānāṃ granthaiḥ sahāsādhāraṇyaṃ pratipādayatas tava granthasya virodhaḥ sphuṭaḥ/ kiṃ ca yad idaṃ niḥśeṣetyādyavāntaravākyārthānāṃ vāpīsnānavyāvṛttidvāreṇa vyaṅgyāsādhāraṇyaṃ saṃpādyate tat kim artham iti pṛcchāmaḥ/ vyaṅgyasya vyañjanārtham iti cen na/ vyañjakagatāsādhāraṇyasya vyañjanānupāyatvāt/
"auṇiddaṃ dobballaṃ cintā alasaṃtaṇaṃ saṇīsasiam maha mandabhāiṇīe keraṃ sahi tuha paribhavai//" ityādau sādhāraṇānām evaunnidryādīnāṃ vaktrādivaiśiṣṭyavaśād arthaviśeṣavyañjakatāyā abhyupagateḥ/ pratyutāsādhāraṇyasya vyāptyaparaparyāyasyānumānānukūlatayā vyaktipratikūlatvāc ca/ atha taṭādighaṭitatve 'pi na niḥśeṣetyādivākyārthānām asādhāraṇyam/ salilārdravasanakaraṇakaproñchanādināpi tatsambhavād iti cet tarhi vāpīsnānavyāvartanena kaḥ puruṣārthaḥ/ ekatrānaikāntikatvasyeva bahuṣv anaikāntikatāyā api jñātāyā anumitipratikūlatvād vyaktyapratikūlatvāc ca/ api cātra hi tadantikam eva rantuṃ gatāsīti vyaṅgyaśarīre tadantikagamanaṃ ramaṇarūpaphalāṃśaś ceti dvayaṃ ghaṭakam/ tatra tāvat tadantikaṃ gatāsītyaṃśasya tvanmate vyaṅgyatvaṃ durupapādam/ tvaduktarītyā viśeṣaṇavākyārthānāṃ niḥśeṣetyādipratipādyānāṃ vācyārthe vāpīsnāne bādhitatvād vācyakakṣāgatapradhānavākyārthībhūtavidhiniṣedhapratipādakābhyāṃ gatā na gateti śabdābhyāṃ virodhilakṣaṇayā niṣedhasya vidheś ca pratīter upapatteḥ/ na hi mukhyārthabādhenonmīlite 'rthe vyaktivedyatocitā/ yathā "aho pūrṇaṃ saro yatra luṭhantaḥ snānti mānavāḥ" ityatra kartṛviśeṣaṇānupapattyadhīnollāse pūrṇatvābhāve/ atha tadantikagamanasya lakṣaṇāvedyatve 'pi ramaṇasya phalāṃśasya lakṣyaśaktimūladhvananavedyatvam avyāhatam eveti cet, "adhamatvam aprakṛṣṭatvaṃ tac ca jātyā karmaṇā vā bhavati/ tatra jātyāpakarṣaṃ nottamanāyikā nāyakasya vākti" ityādinā saṃdarbheṇa bhavataivārthāpattivedyatāyāḥ sphuṭaṃ vacanāt/ anyalabhyasyaca śabdārthatāyā asvīkṛteḥ/ anyac ca yathā kathaṃcid aṅgīkuru vātra vyañjanāvyāpāraṃ tathāpi na taveṣṭasiddhiḥ/ vācyānāṃ niḥśeṣacyutacandanastanataṭatvādīnām adhamatvasya ca tvaduktarītyā prakārāntareṇānupapadyamānatayā dūtīsaṃbhogamātraniṣpādyatvena guṇībhūtavyaṅgyatvaprasaṅgāt/ evaṃ copapattivirodho 'pi sphuṭatara eva/ tasmād vācyārthasādhāraṇyam evocitam atividagdhanāyikānirūpitānāṃ viśeṣaṇavākyārthānām/ tathā hi-- ayi bāndhavajanasyājñātapīḍāgame svārthaparāyaṇe snānakālātikramabhayavaśena nadīmadīyapriyayor antikam agatvaiva vāpīṃ snātum ito mamāntikād gatāsi, na punas tasya paravedanānabhijñatayā duḥkhadātṛtvenādhamasyāntikam/ yato niḥśeṣacyutacandanaṃ stanayos taṭam eva noraḥsthalam, vāpīgatabahulayuvajanatrapāpāravaśyād aṃśadvayalagnāgrasvastikīkṛtabhujalatāyugalena taṭasyaivonnatatayā muhur āmarṣāt/ evaṃ tvarayā samyag akṣālanenottaroṣṭho na nirmṛṣṭarāgo 'dharas tu tadapekṣayā gaṇḍūṣajalaradanaśodhanāṅgulyādīnām adhikasaṃmardam āvahatīti tathā/ kiṃ ca samyag akṣālanena netre jalamātrasaṃsagad dūram uparibhāga evānañjane/ śītavaśāt tānavāc ca tava tanuḥ pulakiteti/ evaṃ tasyā vidagdhāyā gūḍhatātparyaivoktir ucitā, anyathā vaidagdhyabhaṅgāpatteḥ/ evaṃ sādhāraṇoṣv eṣu vākyārtheṣu mukhyārthe bādhābhāvāt tātparyārthasya jhaṭity anākalanāt kuto 'tra lakṣaṇāvakāśaḥ/ anantaraṃ ca vācyārthapratipatter vaktṛboddhavyanāyakādīnāṃ vaiśiṣṭyasya pratītau satyām adhamapadena svapravṛttiprayojako duḥkhadātṛtvarūpo dharmaḥ sādhāraṇātmā vācyārthadaśayām aparādhāntarānimittakaduḥkhadātṛtvarūpeṇa sthito vyañjanāvyāpāreṇa dūtīsaṃbhoganimittakaduḥkhadātṛtvākāreṇa paryavasyatīty ālaṃkārikasiddhāntaniṣkarṣaḥ/ etena "adhamatvam apakṛṣṭatvaṃ tac ca jātyā karmaṇā vā bhavati/ tatra jātyāpakarṣaṃ nottamanāyikā nāyakasya vakti/ nāpi svāparādhaparyavasāyidūtīsaṃbhogādihīnakarmātiriktena karmaṇā/ tādṛśaṃ ca dūtīsaṃpreṣaṇāt prācīnaṃ soḍham eveti nodghāṭanārham itītaravyāvṛtyā saṃbhogarūpam eva paryavasyati" iti yad uktam, tad api nirastam/ vidagdhottamanāyikāyāḥ sakhīsamakṣaṃ tadupabhogarūpasya svanāyakāparādhasya sphuṭaṃ prakāśayitum atitamām anaucityena prācīnānām eva soḍhānām apy aparādhānām asahyatayā dūtīṃ prati pratipipādayiṣitatvād iti dik/ yatra vyaṅgyam apradhānam eva saccamatkārakāraṇaṃ tad dvitīyam//
vācyāpekṣayā pradhānībhūtaṃ vyaṅgyāntaram ādaya guṇībhūtaṃ vyaṅgyam ādāyātivyāptivāraṇāyāvadhāraṇam/ tena tasya dhvanitvam eva/ līnavyaṅgyavācyacitrātiprasaṅgavāraṇāya camatkāretyādi/ yat tu "atādṛśi guṇībhūtavyaṅgyam" ityādi kāvyaprakāśagatalakṣaṇe citrānyatvaṃ ṭīkākārair dattam, tan na/ paryāyoktasamāsoktyādipradhānakāvyeṣv avyāptyāpatteḥ/ teṣāṃ guṇībhūtavyaṅgatāyāś citratāyāś ca sarvālaṃkārikasaṃmatatvāt/ udāharaṇam-- "rāghavavirahajvālāsaṃtāpitasahyaśailaśikhareṣu/ śiśire sukhaṃ śayānāḥ kapayaḥ kupyanti pavanatanayāya//" atra jānakīkuśalāvedanena rāghavaḥ śiśirīkṛta iti vyaṅgyam ākasmikakapikartṛkahanumadviṣayakakopopapādakatayā guṇībhūtam api durdāivavaśato dāsyam anubhavad rājakalatram iva kām api kamanīyatām āvahati/ nanv evaṃ prāg uktam ākṣepagataṃ māndyam api navavadhūprakṛtivirodhād anupapadyamānaṃ vyaṅgyenaivopapādyata iti katham uttamottamatā tasya kāvyasyeti cet, na/ yato hy anudinasakhyupadeśādibhir anaticamatkāribhir apy upapadyamānaṃ māndyam idaṃ prathamacittacumbinīṃ vipralambharatim aprakāśayan na prabhavati svātantryeṇa paranirvṛticarvaṇāgocaratām ādhātum/ ittham eva niḥśeṣacyutacandanam ityādipadyeṣv adhamatvādīni vācyāni vyaṅgyātiriktenārthenāpātato niṣpannaśarīrāṇi vyañjakānīti na tatrāpi guṇībhāvaḥ śaṅkanīyaḥ/ anayor bhedayor anapahnavanīyacamatkārayor api prādhānyāprādhānyābhyām asti kaścit sahṛdayavedyo viśeṣaḥ/ yat tu citramīmāṃsākṛtoktam-- praharaviratau madhye vāhnastato 'pi pareṇa vā kim uta sakale yāte vāhni priya tvam ihaiṣyasi/ iti dinaśataprāpyaṃ deśaṃ priyasya yiyāsato harati gamanaṃ bālālāpaiḥ sabāṣpagalajjalaiḥ//
ity atra sakalam ahaḥ paramāvadhis tataḥ paraṃ prāṇāndhārayituṃ na śaknomīti vyaṅgyaṃ priyagamananivāraṇarūpavācyasiddhyaṅgam ato guṇībhūtavyaṅgyam" iti/ tan na/ sa bāṣpagalajjalānāṃ praharaviratāv ityādyālāpānām eva priyagamananivāraṇarūpavācyasiddhyaṅgatayā vyaṅgyasya guṇībhāvābhāvāt/ ālāpair iti tṛtīyayā prakṛtyarthasya haraṇakriyākaraṇatāyāḥ sphuṭaṃ pratipatteḥ/ na ca vyaṅgyasyāpi vācyasiddhyaṅgatātra saṃbhavatīti tathoktam iti vācyam/ niḥśeṣacyutacandam ityādāv ivādhamatvarūpavācyasiddhyaṅgyatāyā dūtīsaṃbhogādau saṃbhavād guṇībhāvāpatteḥ/ astu vā tataḥ paraṃ prāṇān dhārayituṃ na śaknomīti vyaṅgyasya vācyasiddhyaṅgatayā guṇībhāvas tathāpi nāyakāder vibhāvasya bāṣpāder anubhāvasya cittāvegādeś ca saṃcāriṇaḥ saṃyogād abhivyajyamānena vipralambhena dhvanitvaṃ ko nivārayet/ yatra vyaṅgyacamatkārāsamānādhikaraṇo vācyacamatkāras tattṛtīyam//
yathā yamunāvarṇane--"tanayamainākagaveṣaṇalambīkṛtajaladhijaṭharapraviṣṭahimagiribhujāyamānāyā bhagavatyā bhāgīrathyāḥ sakhī" iti/ atrotprekṣā vācyaiva camatkṛtihetuḥ/ śvaityapātālatalacumbitvādīnāṃ camatkāro leśatayā sann apy utprekṣācamatkṛtijaṭharanilīno nāgariketaranāyikākalpitakāśmīradravāṅgarāgani gīrṇo nijāṅgagaurim eva pratīyate/ na tādṛśo 'sti ko 'pi vācyārtho yo manāg anāmṛṣṭapratīyamāna eva svato ramaṇīyatām ādhātuṃ prabhavati/ anayor eva dvitīyatṛtīyabhedayor jāgarūkājāgarūkaguṇībhūtavyaṅgyayoḥ praviṣṭaṃ nikhilam alaṃkārapradhānaṃ kāvyam/ yatrārthacamatkṛtyupaskṛtā śabdacamatkṛtiḥ pradhānaṃ tad adhamaṃ caturtham// yathā-- "mitrātriputranetrāya trayīśātravaśatrave/ gotrārigotrajatrāya gotrātre te namo namaḥ//" iti/ atrārthacamatkṛtiḥ śabdacamatkṛtau līnā/ yady api yatrārthacamatkṛtisāmānyaśūnyā śabdacamatkṛtis tatpañcamam adhamādhamam api kāvyavidhāsu gaṇayitum ucitam, yathaikākṣarapadyārdhāvṛttiyamakapadmabandhādi, tathāpi ramaṇīyārthapratipādakaśabdatārūpakāvyasāmānyalakṣaṇānākrāntatayā vastutaḥ kāvyatvābhāvena mahākavibhiḥ pracīnaparamparām anurundhānais tatra tatra kāvyeṣu nibaddham api nāsmābhir gaṇitam, vastusthiter evānurodhyatvāt/ kecid imān api caturo bhedān agaṇayanta uttamamadhyamādhamabhāvena trividham eva kāvyam ācakṣate/ tatrārthacitraśabdacitrayor aviśeṣeṇādhamatvam ayuktaṃ vaktum, tāratamyasya sphuṭam upalabdheḥ/ ko hy evaṃ sahṛdayaḥ san "vinirgataṃ mānadam ātmamandirāt", "sa cchinnamūlaḥ kṣatajena reṇuḥ" ityādibhiḥ kāvyaiḥ "svacchandocchalad" ityādīnāṃ pāmaraślāghyānām aviśeṣaṃ brūyāt/ saty api tāratamye yady ekabhedatvaṃ kas tarhi dhvaniguṇībhūtavyaṅgyor īṣadantarayor vibhinnabhedatve durāgrahaḥ/ yatra ca śabdārthacamatkṛtyor aikādhikaraṇyaṃ tatra tayor guṇapradhānabhāvaṃ paryālocya yathālakṣaṇaṃ vyavahartavyam/ samaprādhānye tu madhyamataiva/ yathā-- "ullāsaḥ phullapaṅkeruhapaṭalapatanmattapuṣpaṃdhayānāṃ nistāraḥ śokadāvānalavikalahṛdāṃ kokasīmantinīnām/ utpātas tāmasānām upahatamahasāṃ cakṣuṣāṃ pakṣapātaḥ saṃghātaḥ ko 'pi dhāmnām ayam udayagiriprāntataḥ prādurāsīt//" atra vṛttyanuprāsaprācuryād ojoguṇaprakāśakatvāc ca śabdasya, prasādaguṇayogād anantaram evādhigatasya rūpakasya hetvalaṃkārasya vā vācyasya, camatkṛtyos tulyaskandhatvāt samam eva prādhānyam/ tatra dhvaner uttamottamasyāsaṃkhyabhedasyāpi sāmānyataḥ ke 'pi bhedā nirūpyante-- dvividho dhvaniḥ, abhidhāmūlo lakṣaṇāmūlaś ca/ tatrādyās trividhaḥ/ rasavastvalaṃkāradhvanibhedāt/ rasadhvanir ityalakṣyakramopalakṣaṇād rasabhāvatadābhāsabhāvaśāntibhāvodayabhāvasaṃdhibhāvaśabalatvānāṃ grahaṇam/ dvitīyaś ca dvivīdhaḥ/ arthāntarasaṃkramitavācyo 'tyantatiraskṛtavācyaś ca/ evaṃ pañcātmake dhvanau paramaramaṇīyatayā rasadhvanes tadātmā rasas tāvad abhidhīyate--
(1) tathā cāhuḥ- "vyaktaḥ sa tair vibhāvādyaiḥ sthāyībhāvo rasaḥ smṛtaḥ" iti/ vyakto vyaktiviṣayīkṛtaḥ/ vyaktiś ca bhagnāvaraṇā cit/ yathā hi śarāvādinā pihito dīpas tannivṛttau saṃnihitān padārthān prakāśayati svayaṃ ca prakāśate, evam ātmacaitanyaṃ vibhāvādisaṃvalitān ratyādīn/ antaḥkaraṇadharmāṇāṃ sākṣibhāsyatvābhyupagateḥ/ vibhāvādīnām api svapnaturagādīnām iva raṅgarajatādīnām iva sākṣibhāsyatvam aviruddham/ vyañjakavibhāvādicarvaṇāyā āvaraṇabhaṅgasya votpattivināśābhyām utpattivināśau rase upacaryete varṇanityatāyām iva vyañjakatālvādivyāpārasya gakārādau/ vibhāvādicarvaṇāvadhitvād āvaraṇabhaṅgasya, nivṛttāyāṃ tasyāṃ prakāśasyāvṛtatvād vidyamāno 'pi sthāyī na prakāśate/ yad vā vibhāvādicarvaṇāmāhimnā sahṛdayasya nijasahṛdayatāvaśonmiṣitena tattatsthāyyupahitasvasvarūpānandākārā samādhāv iva yoginaś cittavṛttir upajāyate, tanmayībhavanam iti yāvat/ ānando hy ayaṃ na laukikasukhāntarasādhāraṇaḥ, anantaḥkaraṇavṛttirūpatvāt/ itthaṃ cābhinavaguptamammaṭabhaṭṭādigranthasvārasyena bhagnāvaraṇacidviśiṣṭo ratyādiḥ sthāyī bhāvo rasa iti sthitam/ vastutas tu vakṣyamāṇaśrutisvārasyena ratyādyavacchinna bhagnāvaraṇā cid eva rasaḥ/ sarvathaiva cāsyā viśiṣṭātmano viśeṣaṇaṃ viśeṣyaṃ vā cidaṃśam ādāya nityatvaṃ svaprakāśatvaṃ ca siddham/ ratyādyaṃśam ādāya tv anityatvam itarabhāsyatvaṃ ca/ carvaṇā cāsya cidgatāvaraṇabhaṅga eva prāguktā, tadākārāntaḥkaraṇavṛttir vā/ iyaṃ ca parabrahmāsvādāt samādhervilakṣaṇā, vibhāvādiviṣayasaṃvalitacidānandālambanatvāt/ bhāvyā ca kāvyavyāpāramātrāt/ athāsyāṃ sukhāṃśabhāne kiṃ mānam iti cet samādhāv api tadbhāne kiṃ mānam iti paryanuyogasya tulyatvāt/ "sukham ātyantikaṃ yat tadbuddhigrāhyam atīndriyam", ityādiḥ śabdo 'sti tatra mānam iti cet, asty atrāpi "raso vai saḥ, rasaṃ hy evāyaṃ labdhvānandī bhavati" iti śrutiḥ, sakalasahṛdayapratyakṣaṃ ceti pramāṇadvayam/ yeyaṃ dvitīyapakṣe tadākāracittavṛttyātmikā rasacarvaṇopanyastā sā śabdavyāpārabhāvyatvāc chābdī/ aparokṣasukhālambanatvāc cāparokṣātmikā/ tattvaṃ vākyajabuddhivat/ ityāhur abhinavaguptācāryapādāḥ/ (2) bhaṭṭanāyakās tu "tāṭasthyena rasapratītāv anāsvādyatvam/ ātmagatatvena tu pratyayo durghaṭaḥ/ śakuntalādīnāṃ sāmājikān pratyavibhāvatvāt/ vinā vibhāvam anālambanasya rasāder apratipatteḥ/ na ca kāntātvaṃ sādhāraṇavibhāvatāvacchedakamatrāpyastīti vācyam/ aprāmāṇyanīścayānāliṅgitāgamyātvaprakārakajñānavirahasya viśeṣyatāsaṃbandhāvacchinnapratiyogitākasya vibhāvatāvacchedakakoṭāvavaśyaḥ niveśyatvāt/ anyathā svasrāder api kāntātvādinā tattvāpatteḥ/ evam aśocyatvakāpuruṣatvādijñānavirahasya tathāvidhasya karuṇarasādau/ tādṛśajñānānutpādas tu tatpratibandhakāntaranirvacanam antareṇa durupapādaḥ/ svātmani duṣyantādyabhedabuddhir eva tatheti cet, na/ nāyake dharādhaureyatvadhīratvāder ātmani cādhunikatvakāpuruṣatvāder vāidharmyasya sphuṭaṃ pratipatter abhedabodhasyaiva durlabhatvāt/ kiṃ ca keyaṃ pratītiḥ/ pramāṇantarānupasthānāc chābdīti cet, na/ vyāvahārikaśabdāntarajanyanāyakamithunavṛttāntavittīnām ivāsyā apy ahṛdyatvāpatteḥ/ nāpi mānasī/ cintopanītānāṃ teṣām eva padārthānāṃ mānasyāḥ pratīter asyā vailakṣaṇyopalambhāt/ na ca smṛtiḥ/ tathā prāg ananubhavāt/ tasmād abhidhayā niveditāḥ padārthā bhāvakatvavyāpāreṇāgamyātvādirasavirodhijñānapratibandhadvārā kāntātvādirasānukūladharmapuraskāreṇāvasthāpyante/ evaṃ sādhāraṇīkṛteṣu duḥṣyantaśakuntalādeśakālavayovasthādiṣu, paṅgau pūrvavyāpāramahimani, tṛtīyasya bhogakṛttvavyāpārasya mahimnā nigīrṇayo rajastamasor udriktasattvajanitena nijacitsvabhāvanirvṛtiviśrāntilakṣaṇena sākṣātkāreṇa viṣayīkṛto bhāvanopanītaḥ sādhāraṇātmā ratyādiḥ sthāyī rasaḥ/ tatra bhujyamāno ratyādiḥ, ratyādibhogo vetyubhayam eva rasaḥ/ so 'yaṃ bhogo viṣayasaṃvalanād brahmāsvādasavidhavartītyucyate/ evaṃ ca trayo 'mśāḥ kāvyasya-- "abhidhā bhāvanā caiva tadbhogīkṛtir eva ca" ity āhuḥ/ matasyaitasya pūrvasmān matād bhāvakatvavyāpārāntarasvīkāra eva viśeṣa/ bhogas tu vyaktiḥ/ bhogakṛttvaṃ tu vyañjanād aviśiṣṭam/ anyā tu saiva saraṇiḥ/ (3) navyās tu "kāvye nāṭye ca kavinā naṭena ca prakāśiteṣu vibhāvādiṣu vyañjanavyāpāreṇa duṣyantādau śakuntalādiratau gṛhītāyām anantaraṃ ca sahṛdayatollāsitasya bhāvanāviśeṣarūpasya doṣasya mahimnā kalpitaduṣyantatvāvacchādite svātmany ajñānāvacchinne śuktikāśakala iva rajatakhaṇḍaḥ samutpadyamāno 'nirvacanīyaḥ sākṣibhāsyaḥ śakuntalādiviṣayakaratyādir eva rasaḥ/ ayaṃ ca kāryo doṣaviśeṣasya/ nāśyaś ca tannāśasya/ svottarabhāvinā lokottarāhlādena bhedāgrahāt sukhapadavyapadeśyo bhavati/ svapūrvopasthitena ratyādinā tadagrahāt tadratitvenaikatvādhyavasānād vā vyaṅgyo varṇanīyaś cocyate/ avacchādakaṃ duṣyantatvam apy anirvacanīyam eva/ avacchādakatvaṃ ca ratyādiviśiṣṭabodhe viśeṣyatāvacchedakatvam/ etena duṣyantādiniṣṭhasya ratyāder anāsvādyatvān na rasatvam/ svaniṣṭhasya tu tasya śakuntalādibhir atatsaṃbandhibhiḥ katham abhivyaktiḥ/ svasmin duṣyantādyabhedabuddhis tu bādhabuddhiparāhatetyādikam apāstam/ yad api vibhāvādīnāṃ sādhāraṇyaṃ prācīnair uktaṃ tad api kāvyena śakuntalādiśabdaiḥ śakuntalātvādiprakārakabodhajanakaiḥ pratipādyamāneṣu śakuntalādiṣu doṣaviśeṣakalpanaṃ vinā durupapādam/ ato 'vaśyakalpye doṣaviśeṣe tenaiva svātmani duṣyantādyabhedabuddhir api sūpapādā/ nanv evam api rater astu nāma duṣyanta iva sahṛdaye 'pi sukhaviśeṣajanakatā karuṇarasādiṣu tu sthāyinaḥ śokāder duḥkhajanakatayā prasiddhasya katham iva sahṛdayāhlādahetutvam/ pratyuta nāyaka iva sahṛdaye 'pi duḥkhajananasyaivaucityāt/ na ca satyasya śokāder duḥkhajanakatvaṃ kḷptaṃ na kalpitasyeti nāyakānām eva duḥkham, na sahṛdayasyeti vācyam/ rajjusarpāder bhayakampādyanutpādakatāpatteḥ/ sahṛdaye rater api kalpitatvena sukhajanakatānupapatteś ceti cet/ satyam/ śṛṅgārapradhānakāvyebhya iva karuṇapradhānakāvyebhyo 'pi yadi kevalāhlāda eva sahṛdayahṛdayapramāṇakas tadā kāryānurodhena kāraṇasya kalpanīyatvāl lokottarakāvyavyāpārasyaivāhlādaprayojakatvam iva duḥkhapratibandhakatvam api kalpanīyam/ atha yady āhlāda iva duḥkham api pramāṇasiddhaṃ tadā pratibandhakatvaṃ na kalpanīyam/ svasvakāraṇavaśāc cobhayam api bhaviṣyati/ atha tatra kavīnāṃ kartum, sahṛdayānāṃ ca śrotum, kathaṃ pravṛttiḥ/ aniṣṭasādhanatvena nivṛtter ucitatvāt/ iti cet/ iṣṭasyādhikyād aniṣṭasya ca nyūnatvāc candanadravalepanādāv iva pravṛtter upapatteḥ/ kevalāhlādavādināṃ tu pravṛttir apratyūhaiva/ aśrupātādayo 'pi tattadānandānubhavasvābhāvyāt/ na tu duḥkhāt/ ata eva bhagavadbhaktānāṃ bhagavadvarṇanākarṇanād aśrupātādaya upapadyante/ na hi tatra jātvapi duḥkhānubhavo 'sti/ na ca karuṇarasādau svātmani śokādimaddaśarathāditādātmyārope yady āhlādas tadā svapnādau saṃnipātādau vā svātmani tadārope 'pi sa syāt/ ānubhavikaṃ ca tatra kevalaṃ duḥkham/ itīhāpi tad eva yuktam iti vācyam/ ayaṃ hi lokottarasya kāvyavyāpārasya mahimā, yatprayojyā aramaṇīyā api śokādayaḥ padārthā āhlādam alaukikaṃ janayanti/ vilakṣaṇo hi kamanīyaḥ kāvyavyāpāraja āsvādaḥ pramāṇāntarajād anubhavāt/ janyatvaṃ ca svajanyabhāvanājanyaratyādiviṣayakatvam/ tena rasāsvādasya kāvyavyāpārājanyatve 'pi na kṣatiḥ/ śakuntalādāv agamyātvajñānotpādas tu svātmani duṣyantādyabhedabuddhyā pratibadhyate" ity āhuḥ/ (4) pare tu "vyañjanavyāpārasyānirvacanīyakhyāteś cānabhyupagame 'pi prāguktadoṣamahimnā svātmani duṣyantāditādātmyāvagāhī śakuntalādiviṣayakaratyādimadabhedabodho mānasaḥ vilakṣaṇaviṣayitāśālī rasaḥ/ svāpnādis tu tādṛśabodho na kāvyārthacintanajanmeti na rasaḥ/ tena tatra na tādṛśāhlādāpattiḥ/ evam api svasminn avidyamānasya ratyāder anubhavaḥ kathaṃ nāma syāt/ maivam/ na hy ayaṃ laukikasākṣātkāro ratyādeḥ, yenāvaśyaṃ viṣayasadbhāvo 'pekṣaṇīyaḥ syāt/ api tu bhramaḥ/ āsvādanasya rasaviṣayakatvavyavahāras tu ratyādiviṣayakatvālambanaḥ" ity api vadanti/ etaiś ca svātmani duṣyantatvadharmitāvacchedakaśakuntalādiviṣayakarativaiśiṣṭyāvagāhī, svātmatvaviśiṣṭe śakuntalādiviṣayakarativiśiṣṭaduṣyantatādātmyāvagāhī, svātmatvaviśiṣṭe duṣyantatvaśakuntalāviṣayakaratyor vāiśiṣṭyāvagāhī, vā trividho 'pi bodho rasapadārthatayābhyupeyaḥ/ tatra "rater viśeṣaṇībhūtāyāḥ śabdād apratītatvād vyañjanāyāś ca tatpratyāyikāyā anabhyupagamāc ceṣṭādiliṅgakam ādau viśeṣaṇajñānārtham anumānam abhyupeyam/ (5) "mukhyatayā duṣyantādigata eva raso ratyādiḥ kamanīyavibhāvādyabhinayapradarśanakovide duṣyantādyanukartari naṭe samāropya sākṣātkriyate" ity eke/ mate 'smin sākṣātkāro duṣyanto 'yaṃ śakuntalādiviṣayakaratimān" ityādiḥ prāgvad dharmyaṃśe laukika āropyāṃśe tv alaukikaḥ/ (6) duṣyantādigato ratyādir naṭe pakṣe duṣyantatvena gṛhīte vibhāvādibhiḥ kṛtrimair apy akṛtrimatayā gṛhītair bhinne viṣaye 'numitisāmagryā balavattvād anumīyamāno rasaḥ" ity apare/ (7) "vibhāvādayas trayaḥ samuditā rasāḥ" iti katipaye/ (8) "triṣu ya eva camatkārī sa eva raso 'nyathā tu trayo 'pi na" iti bahavaḥ/ (9) "bhāvyāmāno vibhāva eva rasaḥ ity anye/ (10) "tathā anubhāvas tathā itītare/ (11) "tathā vyabhicāry eva tathā pariṇamati" iti kecit/ tatra "vibhāvānubhāvavyabhicārisaṃyogād rasaniṣpattiḥ" iti sūtraṃ tattanmataparatayā vyākhyāyate-- "vibhāvānubhāvavyabhicāribhiḥ saṃyogād vyañjanād rasasya cidānandaviśiṣṭasthāyyātmanaḥ sthāyyupahitacidānandātmano vā niṣpattiḥ svarūpeṇa prakāśanam" ity ādye/ "vibhāvānubhāvavyabhicāriṇāṃ samyaksādhāraṇātmatayā yogād bhāvakatvavyāpāreṇa bhāvanād rasasya sthāyyupahitasattvodrekaprakāśitasvātmānandarūpasya niṣpattir bhogākhyena sākṣātkāreṇa viṣayīkṛtiḥ" iti dvitīye/ "vibhāvānubhāvavyabhicāriṇāṃ saṃyogād bhāvanāviśeṣarūpād doṣād rasasyānirvacanīyaduṣyantaratyādyātmano niṣpattir utpattiḥ" iti tṛtīye/ "vibhāvādīnāṃ saṃyogāj jñānād rasasya jñānaviśeṣātmano niṣpattir utpattiḥ" iti caturthe/ vibhāvādīnāṃ saṃbandhād rasasya ratyāder niṣpattir āropaḥ iti pañcame/ vibhāvādibhiḥ kṛtrimair apy akṛtrimatayā gṛhītaiḥ saṃyogād anumānād rasasya ratyāder niṣpattir anumitir naṭādau pakṣa iti śeṣaḥ" iti ṣaṣṭhe/ "vibhāvādīnāṃ trayāṇāṃ saṃyogāt samudāyād rasaniṣpattī rasapadavyavahāraḥ" iti saptame/ "vibhāvādiṣu samyagyogāc camatkārāt" ity aṣṭame/ tad evaṃ paryavasitas triṣu mateṣu sūtravirodhaḥ/ vibhāvānubhāvavyabhicāriṇām ekasya tu rasāntarasādhāraṇatayā niyatarasavyañjakatānupapatteḥ sūtre militānām upādānam/ evaṃ ca prāmāṇike militānāṃ vyañjakatve yatra kvacid ekasmād evāsādhāraṇād rasodbodhas tatretaradvayam ākṣepyam/ ato nānaikāntikatvam/ itthaṃ nānājātīyābhiḥ śemuṣībhir nānārūpatayāvasito 'pi manīṣibhiḥ paramāhlādāvinābhāvitayā pratīyamānaḥ prapañce 'smin raso ramaṇīyatām āvahatīti nirvivādam/ sa ca-- "śṛṅgāraḥ karuṇaḥ śānto raudro vīro 'dbhutas tathā/ hāsyo bhayānakaś caiva bībhatsaś ceti te nava//" ity ukter navadhā/ munivacanaṃ cātra mānam/ kecit tu-- "śāntasya śamasādhyatvān naṭe ca tadasaṃbhavāt/ aṣṭāv eva rasā nāṭye na śāntas tatra yujyate//" ity āhuḥ/ tac cāpare na kṣamante/ tathā hi-- naṭe śamābhāvād iti hetur asaṃgataḥ/ naṭe rasābhivyakter asvīkārāt/ sāmājikānāṃ śamavattvena tatra rasodbodhe bādhakābhāvāt/ na ca naṭasya śamābhāvāt tadabhinayaprakāśakatvānupapattir iti vācyam/ tasya bhayakrodhāder apy abhāvena tadabhinayaprakāśakatāyā apy asaṃgatyāpatteḥ/ yadi ca naṭasya krodhāder abhāvena vāstavatatkāryāṇāṃ vadhabandhādīnām utpattyasaṃbhave 'pi kṛtrimatatkāryāṇāṃ śikṣābhyāsādita utpattau nāsti bādhakam iti nirīkṣyate, tadā prakṛte 'pi tulyam/ atha nāṭye gītavādyādīnāṃ virodhināṃ sattvāt sāmājikeṣv api viṣayavaimukhyātmanaḥ śāntasya katham udreka iti cet, nāṭye śāntarasam abhyupagacchadbhiḥ phalabalāt tadgītavādyādes tasmin virodhitāyā akalpanāt/ viṣayacintāsāmānyasya tatra virodhitvasvīkāre tadīyālambanasya saṃsārānītyatvasya taduddīpanasya purāṇaśravaṇasatsaṅgapuṇyavanatīrthāvalokanāder api viṣayatvena virodhitvāpatteḥ/ ata eva caramādhyāye saṃgītaratnākare-- "aṣṭāv eva rasā nāṭyeṣv iti kecid acūcudan/ tadacāru yataḥ kaṃcin na rasaṃ svadate naṭaḥ//"
ityādinā nāṭye 'pi śānto raso 'stīti vyavasthāpitam/ yair api nāṭye śānto raso nāstīty abhyupagamyate tair api bādhakābhāvān mahābhāratādiprabandhānāṃ śāntarasapradhānatayā akhilalokānubhavasiddhatvāc ca kāvye so 'vaśyaṃ svīkāryaḥ/ atra eva "aṣṭau nāṭye rasāḥ smṛtāḥ" ity upakramya "śānto 'pi navamo rasaḥ" iti mammaṭabhaṭṭā apy upasamahārṣuḥ/ amīṣāṃ ca-- "ratiḥ śokaś ca nirvedakrodhotsāhaś ca vismaya/ hāso bhayaṃ jugupsā ca sthāyibhāvāḥ kramād amī//" rasebhyaḥ sthāyibhāvānāṃ ghaṭāder ghaṭādyavacchinnākāśād iva prathamadvitīyayor matayoḥ, satyarajatasyānirvacanīyarajatād iva tṛtīye, viṣayasya (rajatādeḥ) jñānād iva caturthe bhedo bodhyaḥ/ tatra ā prabandhaṃ sthiratvād amīṣāṃ bhāvānāṃ sthāyitvam/ na ca cittavṛttirūpāṇām eṣām āśuvināśitvena sthiratvaṃ durlabham, vāsanārūpatayā sthiratvaṃ tu vyabhicāriṣv atiprasaktam iti vācyam/ vāsanārūpāṇām amīṣāṃ muhurmuhur abhivyakter eva sthirapadārthatvāt/ vyabhicāriṇāṃ tu naiva, tadabhivyakter vidyududdyotaprāyatvāt/ yadāhuḥ-- "virūddhair aviruddhair vā bhāvair vicchidyate na yaḥ/ ātmabhāvaṃ nayatyāśu sa sthāyī lavaṇākaraḥ//
ciraṃ citte 'vatiṣṭhante saṃbadhyante 'nubandhibhiḥ/ rasatvaṃ ye prapadyante prasiddhāḥ sthāyino 'tra te//" ciram iti vyabhicārivāraṇāya/ anubandhibhir vibhāvādyaiḥ/ tathā-- "sajātīyavijātīyair atiraskṛtamūrtimān/ yāvad rasaṃ vartamānaḥ sthāyibhāva udāhṛtaḥ//" iti/ kecit tu ratyādyanyatamatvaṃ sthāyitvam āhuḥ/ tan na/ ratyādīnām ekasmin prarūḍhe 'nyasyāprarūḍhasya vyabhicāritvopagamāt/ prarūḍhatvāprarūḍhatve bahvalpavibhāvajatve/ taduktaṃ ratnākare-- "ratyādayaḥ sthāyibhāvāḥ syur bhūyiṣṭhavibhāvajāḥ/ stokaṃ vibhāvair utpannās ta eva vyabhicāriṇaḥ// iti/ evaṃ ca vīrarase pradhāne krodho, raudre cotsāhaḥ, śṛṅgāre hāso vyabhicārī bhavati, nāntarīyakaś ca/ yadā tu pradhānaparipoṣārthaṃ so 'pi bahuvibhāvajaḥ kriyate tadā tu rasālaṃkāra ityādi bodhyam/ tatra--
gurudevatāputrādyālambanas tu vyabhicārī/
strīpuṃsayos tu viyoge jīvitatvajñānadaśāyāṃ vaiklavyapoṣitāyā rater eva prādhānyāc chṛṅgāro vipralambhākhyo rasaḥ/ vaiklavyaṃ tu saṃcārimātram/ mṛtatvajñānadaśāyāṃ tu ratipoṣitasya vaiklavyasyeti karuṇa eva/ yadā tu saty api mṛtatvajñāne devatāprasādādinā punar ujjīvanajñānaṃ kathaṃcit syāt, tadālambanasyātyantikanirāsābhāvāc cirapravāsa iva vipralambha eva, na sa karuṇaḥ/ yathā candrāpīḍaṃ prati mahāśvetāvākyeṣu/ kecit tu rasāntaram evātra karuṇavipralambhākhyam icchanti/
gṛhakalahādijas tu vyabhicāri/
ayaṃ ca paravināśādihetuḥ/ kṣudrāparādhajanmā tu paruṣavacanāsaṃbhāṣaṇādihetuḥ/ ayam evāmarṣākhyo vyabhicārīti vivekaḥ/
paramānarthaviṣayakatvābhāve tu sa eva trāso vyabhicāri/ apare tu autpātikaprabhavas trāsaḥ, svāparādhadvārotthaṃ bhayam iti bhayatrāsayor bhedam āhuḥ/
vibhāvayantīti vyutpatteḥ/
anu paścād bhāva utpattir yeṣām/ anubhāvayantīti vā vyutpatteḥ/
tatra śṛṅgārasya strīpuṃsāvālambane/ candrikāvasantavividhopavanarahaḥsthānādaya uddīpanavibhāvāḥ/ tanmukhāvalokanatadguṇaśravaṇakīrtanādayo 'nye sāttvikabhāvāś cānubhāvāḥ/ smṛticintādayo vyabhicāriṇaḥ/ karuṇasya bandhunāśādaya ālambanāni/ tatsambandhigṛhaturagābharaṇadarśanādayas tatkathāśravaṇādayaś coddīpakāḥ/ gātrakṣepāśrupātādayo 'nubhāvā glānikṣayamohaviṣādacintautsukyadīnatājaḍatādayo vyabhicāriṇaḥ/ śāntasyānityatvena jñātaṃ jagadālambanam/ vedāntaśravaṇatapovanatāpasadarśanādyuddīpanam/ viṣayāruciśatrumittrādyaudāsīnyaceṣṭāhānināsāgradṛṣṭyādayo 'nubhāvāḥ/ harṣonmādasmṛtimatyādayo vyabhicāriṇaḥ/ raudrasyāgaskṛtpuruṣādir ālambanam/ tatkṛto 'parādhādir uddīpakaḥ/ vadhabandhādiphalako netrāruṇyadantapīḍanaparuṣabhāṣaṇaśastragrahaṇādir anubhāvaḥ/ amarṣavegaugryacāpalādayaḥ saṃcāriṇaḥ/ evaṃ yasyāś cittavṛtter yo viṣayaḥ sa tasyā ālambanam/ nimittāni coddīpakānīti bodhyam/ tatra śṛṅgāro dvividhaḥ/ saṃbhogo vipralambhaś ca/ rateḥ saṃyogakālāvacchinnatve prathamaḥ/ viyogakālāvacchinnatve dvitīyaḥ/ saṃyogaś ca na daṃpatyoḥ sāmānādhikaraṇyam/ ekatalpaśayane 'pīrṣyādisadbhāve vipralambhasyaiva varṇanāt/ evaṃ viyogo 'pi na vaiyadhikaraṇyam/ doṣasyoktatvāt/ tasmād dvāv imau saṃyogaviyogākhyāv antaḥkaraṇavṛttiviśeṣau/ yat saṃyukto viyuktaś cāsmīti dhīḥ/ tatrādyo yathā "śayitā savidhe 'pyanīśvarā" ity atra nirūpitaḥ/ yat tu citramīmāṃsāyām--
"vāgarthāviva saṃpṛktau" ityatra rasadhvaniḥ/ niratiśayapremaśālitāvyañjanāt" ititaddhvanimārgānākalananibandhanam/ pārvatīparameśvaraviṣayakakaviratau pradhāne niratiśayapremṇo guṇībhāvāt/ na hi guṇībhūtasya ratyāde rasadhvanivyapadeśahetutvaṃ yuktam/ "bhinno rasādyalaṃkārād alaṃkāryatayā sthitaḥ" iti siddhāntāt/ dvitīyo yathā-- "vāco māṅgalikīḥ prayāṇasamaye jalpaty analpaṃ jane kelīmandiramārutāyanamukhe vinyastavaktrāmbujā/ niḥśvāsaglapitādharoparipatadbāṣpārdravakṣoruhā bālā lolavilocanā śiva śiva prāṇeśam ālokate//" atrāpy ālambanasya nāyakasya, niḥśvāsāśrupātāder anubhāvasya, viṣādacintāvegādeś ca vyabhicāriṇaḥ, saṃyogād ratir abhivyajyamānā viyogakālāvacchinnatvād vipralambharasavyapadeśahetuḥ/ yathā vā-- "āvirbhūtā yadavādhi madhusyandinī nandasūnoḥ kāntiḥ kācin nikhilanayanākarṣaṇe kārmaṇajñā/ śvāso dīrghas tadavādhi mukhe pāṇḍimā gaṇḍayugme śūnyā vṛttiḥ kulamṛgadṛśāṃ cetasi prādurāsīt//" yathā vā-- "nayanāñcalāvamarśaṃ yā na kadācit purā sehe/ āliṅgitāpi joṣaṃ tasthau sā gantukena dayitena//"
ihāpi sahajacāñcalyanivṛttir jaḍatā cānubhāvavyabhicāriṇau/ imaṃ ca pañcavidhaṃ prāñcaḥ pravāsādibhir upādhibhir āmananti/ te ca pravāsābhilāṣaviraherṣyāśāpānāṃ viśeṣānupalambhān nāsmābhiḥ prapañcitāḥ/ karuṇo yathā-- "apahāya sakalabāndhavacintām udvāsya gurukulapraṇayam/ hā tanaya vinayaśālin katham iva paralokapathiko 'bhūḥ//" atra pramītatanaya ālambanam/ tatkālāvacchinnabāndhavadarśanādy uddīpanam/ rodanam anubhāvaḥ/ dainyādayaḥ saṃcāriṇaḥ/ śānto yathā-- "malayānilakālakūṭayo ramaṇīkuntalabhogibhogayoḥ/ śvapanātmabhuvor nirantarā mama jātā paramātmani sthitiḥ//" atra prapañcaḥ sarvo 'py ālambanam/ sarvatra sāmyam anubhāvaḥ/ matyādayaḥ saṃcāriṇaḥ/ yady api prathamārdhe uttamādhamayor upakramā dvitīyārdhe 'dhamottamavacanaṃ kramabhaṅgam āvahati, tathāpi vaktur brahmātmakatayottamādhamajñānavaikalyaṃ saṃpannam iti dyotanāya kramabhaṅgo guṇa eva/ idaṃ punar nodāhāryam-- "surasrotasvinyāḥ pulinam adhitiṣṭhan nayanayor vidhāyāntarmudrām atha sapadi vidrāvya viṣayān/ vidhūtāntardhvānto madhuramadhurāyāṃ citi kadā nimagnaḥ syāṃ kasyāṃcana navanabhasyāmbudaruci//" atrāpi yady api viṣayagaṇālambanaḥ surasrotasvinītaṭādyuddīpito nayananimīlanādibhir anubhāvitaḥ sthāyi nirvedaḥ pratīyate, tathāpi bhagavadvāsudevālambanāyāṃ kaviratau guṇībhūta iti na śāntarasadhvanivyapadeśahetuḥ/ idaṃ ca padyaṃ mannirmitāyāṃ bhagavadbhaktipradhānāyāṃ karuṇālaharyām upanibaddham iti tatpradhānabhāvaprādhānyam evārhati/ śāntarasānanuguṇaś cāyam ojasvī gumpha iti cānudāhāryam evaitat/ pūrvapadye tu "paramātmani sthitiḥ" ity anena tattādrūpyāvagamād rater apratipattiḥ/ raudro yathā-- "navocchalitayauvanaspharadakharvagarvajvare madīyagurukārmukaṃ galitasādhvasaṃ vṛścati/ ayaṃ patatu nirdayaṃ dalitadṛptabhūbhṛdgala- skhaladrudhiraghasmaro mama paraśvadho bhairavaḥ//" atra tadānīṃ rāmatvenājñāto gurukārmukabhañjaka ālambanam/ ata eva viśeṣyānupādānam/ gurudruho nāmagrahaṇānaucityāt, krodhāviṣkārād vā/ dhvaniviśeṣānumito niḥśaṅkadhanurbhaṅga uddīpakaḥ/ paruṣoktir anubhāvaḥ/ garvogratvādayaḥ saṃcāriṇaḥ/ eṣā ca dhanurbhaṅgadhvanibhagnasamādher bhārgavasyoktiḥ/ vṛttir apy atra mahoddhatā raudrasya paramaujasvitāṃ paripuṣṇāti/ anyatra gurusmaraṇe saty ahaṃbhāvavigamasyāvaśyakatayā prakṛte cājahatsvārthalakṣaṇāmūladhvananena madīyety anena garvotkarṣasyaiva prakāśanāt sphuṭaṃ gamyamānena vivekaśunyatvena krodhasyādhikyaṃ gamyate/ idaṃ tu nodāhāryam-- "dhanurvidalanadhvaniśravaṇatatkṣaṇāvirbhavan mahāguruvadhasmṛtiḥ śvasanavegadhūtādharaḥ/ vilocanaviniḥsaradbahalavisphuliṅgavrajo raghupravaram ākṣipañ jayati jāmadagnyo muniḥ//"
atrāpy aparādhāspadena raghunandanenālambito dhanurvidalanadhvaniśravaṇenoddīpito niḥśvāsanetrajvalanādibhir anubhāvito mahāguruvadhasmṛtigarvogratvādibhiś ca saṃcāritaḥ krodho yady api vyajyate, tathāpy asau tatprabhāvavarṇanabījabhūtāyāṃ kaviratau guṇībhūta iti na raudrarasadhvanivyapadeśahetuḥ/ kāvyaprakāśagataraudrarasodāharaṇe tu "kṛtam anumataṃ dṛṣṭaṃ vā yair idaṃ gurupātakam" iti padye raudrarasavyajanakṣamā nāsti vṛttiḥ, atas tatkaver aśaktir eva/ vīraś caturdhā/ dānadayāyuddhadharmāis tadupādher utsāhasya caturvidhatvāt/ tatrādyo yathā-- "kiyad idam adhikaṃ me yaddvijāyārthayitre kavacam aramaramaṇīyaṃ kuṇḍale cārpayāmi/ akaruṇam avakṛttya drākkṛpāṇena niryad- bahalarudhiradhāraṃ maulim āvedayāmi//" eṣā dvijaveṣāyendrāya kavacakuṇḍaladānodyatasya karṇasya taddānavismitān sabhyān pratyuktiḥ/ atra yācamāna ālambanam/ tadudīritā stutir uddīpikā/ kavacādivitaraṇaṃ tatra laghutvabuddhyādikaṃ cānubhāvaḥ/ me ity arthāntarasaṃkramitavācyadhvanyutthāpito garvaḥ svakīyalokottarapitṛjanyatvādismṛtiś ca saṃcāriṇau/ vṛttir apy atra tattadarthānurūpodgamavirāmaśālitayā sahṛdayaikacamatkāriṇī/ tathā hi--utsāhapoṣakaṃ kavacakuṇḍalārpaṇayor laghutvanirūpaṇaṃ vidhātuṃ pūrvārdhe tadanukūlaśithilabandhātmikā/ uttarārdhe tu maulitaḥ prāgvaktṛgatagarvotsāhaparipoṣaṇāyoddhatā/ tataḥ paraṃ brāhmaṇe savinayatvaṃ prakāśayituṃ tanmūlībhūtaṃ garvarāhityaṃ dhvanayituṃ punaḥ śithilaiva/ ata evāvedayāmīty uktam/ na tu dadāmi vitarāmīti vā/ idaṃ tu nodāharaṇīyam--
yasyoddāmadivāniśārthivilasaddānapravāhaprathām ākarṇyāvanimaṇḍalāgataviyadbandīndravṛndānanāt/ īrṣyānirbharaphullaromanikaravyāvalgadūdhaḥsravat- pīyūṣaprakaraiḥ surendrasurabhiḥ prāvṛṭpayodāyate//
atrendrasabhāmadhyagatasakalanirīkṣakālambanaḥ avanimaṇḍalāgataviṣayavandīndravadanavinirgatarājadānavarṇanoddīpitaḥ, ūdhaḥprasnutapīyūṣaprakarair anubhāvitaḥ, asūyādibhiḥ saṃcāribhiḥ paripoṣito 'pi kāmagavīgata utsāho rājastutiguṇībhūta iti na rasavyapadeśahetuḥ/ ata evedam api nodāharaṇam-- "sābdhidvīpakulācalāṃ vasumatīm ākramya saptāntarāṃ sarvāṃ dyām api susmitena hariṇā mandaṃ samālokitaḥ/ prādurbhūtaparapramodavidaladromāñcitas tatkṣaṇaṃ vyānamrīkṛtakaṃdharo 'suravaro mauliṃ puro nyastavān//" iha ca bhagavadvāmanālambanaḥ tatkartṛkamandanirīkṣaṇoddīpitaḥ, romāñcādibhir anubhāvitaḥ, harṣādibhiḥ poṣitaḥ, utsāho vyajyamāno 'pi guṇaḥ/ prāg anyagatasyeva prakṛte rājagatasyāpi tasya rājastutyutkarṣakatvāt/ etena "tyāgaḥ saptasamudramudritamahīnirvyājadānāvadhiḥ" iti śrīvatsalāñchanoktam udāharaṇaṃ parāstam/ tasya guṇībhūtavyaṅgyatvena rasadhvaniprasaṅge 'nudāharaṇīyatvāt/ nanu "akaruṇam avakṛtya-" ity atrāpi pratīyamānasya dānavīrasya karṇastutyaṅgatvāt kathaṃ dhvanitvam iti cet, satyam/ atra kaveḥ karṇavacanānuvādamātratātparyakatvena karṇastutau tātparyavirahāt/ karṇasya ca mahāśayatvenātmastutau tātparyānupapatteḥ stutir avākyārtha eva/ paraṃ tu vīrarasapratyayānantaraṃ tādṛśotsāhena liṅgena svādhikaraṇe sānumīyate/ rājavarṇanapadye tu rājastutau tātparyād vākyārthataiva tasyāḥ/ dvitīyo yathā-- "na kapota bhavantam aṇv api spṛśatu śyena samudbhavaṃ bhayam/ idam adya mayā tṛṇīkṛtaṃ bhavadāyuḥkuśalaṃ kalevaram//" athavaivaṃ vinyāsaḥ-- "na kapotakapotakaṃ tava spṛśatu śyena manāg api spṛhā/ idam adya mayā samarpitaṃ bhavate cārutaraṃ kalevaram//" eṣā śiveḥ kapotaṃ śyenaṃ prati coktiḥ/ atra kapota ālambanam/ tadgataṃ vyākulībhavanam uddīpanam/ tasya kṛte svakalevarārpaṇam anubhāvaḥ/ na cātra śarīradānapratyayād dānavīradhvanitvāpattir iti vācyam/ śyenakapotayor bhakṣyabhakṣakabhāvāpannatvena śibiśarīrasyārthino 'bhāvāt tadapratipatteḥ/ śyena śarīranivedanasya kapotaśarīratrāṇopādhikatayā vinimayapadavācyatvāt/ tṛtīyo yathā-- "raṇe dīnān devān daśavadana vidrāvya vahati prabhāvaprāgalbhyaṃ tvayi tu mama ko 'yaṃ parikaraḥ/ lalāṭodyajjvālākavalitajagajjālavibhavo bhavo me kodaṇḍacyutaviśikhavegaṃ kalayatu//" eṣā daśavadanaṃ prati bhagavato rāmasyoktiḥ/ iha bhava ālambanam/ raṇadarśanam uddīpanam/ daśavadanāvajñānubhāvaḥ/ garvaḥ saṃcārī/ vṛttir atra devānāṃ prastāve tadgatakātaryaprakāśanadvārā vīrarasānālambanatvāvagataye 'nuddhataiva/ daśavadanaprastāve tu devadarpadamanavīratvapratipādanāyoddhatāpi tasyāvajñayā rāmagatotsāhānālambanatvena tadālambanasya rasasyāpratyayān na prakarṣavatī/ bhagavato bhavasya tu paramottamālambanavibhāvatvāt tatprastāve tadālambanasyaujasvino vīrarasasya niṣpatteḥ prakṛṣṭoddhatā/ caturtho yathā-- "sapadi vilayam etu rājyalakṣmīr upari patantv athavā kṛpāṇadhārāḥ/ apaharatutarāṃ śiraḥ kṛtānto mama tu matir na manāg apaiti dharmāt//" eṣādharmeṇāpi ripur jetavya iti vadantaṃ prati yudhiṣṭhirasyoktiḥ/ atra dharmaviṣaya ālambanam/ "na jātu kāmān na bhayān na lobhād dharmaṃ tyajej jīvītasyāpi hetoḥ" ity ādivākyālocanam uddīpanam/ śiraśchedādyaṅgīkāro 'nubhāvaḥ/ dhṛtiḥ saṃcāriṇī/ itthaṃ vīrarasasya cāturvidhyaṃ prapañcitaṃ prācām anurodhāt/ vastutas tu bahavo vīrarasasya śṛṅgārasyeva prakārā nirūpayituṃ śakyante/ tathā hi--prācīna eva "sapadi vilayam etu" ityādi padye "mama tu matir na manāg apaiti satyāt" iti caramapādavyatyāsena padyāntaratāṃ prāpite satyavīrasyāpi saṃbhavāt/ na ca satyasyāpi dharmāntargatatayā dharmavīrarasa eva tadvīrasyāpy antarbhāva iti vācyam/ dānadayayor api tadantargatatayā tadvīrayor api dharmavīrāt pṛthaggaṇanānaucityāt/ evaṃ pāṇḍityavīro 'pi pratīyate/ yathā-- "api vakti girāṃ patiḥ svayaṃ yadi tāsām adhidevatāpi vā/ ayam asmi puro hayānanasmaraṇollaṅghitavāṅmayāmbudhiḥ//" atra bṛhaspatyādyālambanaḥ sabhādidarśanoddīpito nikhilavidvattiraskārānubhāvito garveṇa saṃcāriṇā poṣita utsāho vaktuḥ pratīyate/ nanu cātra yuddhavīratvam/ yuddhatvasya vādasādhāraṇasya vācyatvād iti cet/ kṣamāvīre kiṃ brūyāḥ/ yathā-- api bahaladahanajālaṃ mūrdhni ripur me nirantaraṃ dhamatu/ pātayatu vāsidhārām aham aṇumātraṃ na kiṃcid ābhāṣe//" kṣamāvata uktir iyam/ balavīre vā kiṃ samādadhyāḥ/ yathā-- "pariharatu dharāṃ phaṇipravīraḥ sukhamayatāṃ kamaṭho 'pi tāṃ vihāya/" aham iha puruhūta pakṣakoṇe nikhilam idaṃ jagad aklamaṃ vahāmi//
puruhūtaṃ pratyeṣā garutmata uktiḥ/ nanu "api vakti-"pariharatu dharām-" iti padyadvaye garva eva notsāhaḥ/ madhyasthapadye tu dhṛtir eva dhvanyate iti bhāvadhvanaya evaite na rasadhvanaya iti cet tarhi yuddhavīrādiṣv api garvādidhvanitām eva kiṃ na brūyāḥ/ rasadhvanisāmānyam eva vā kiṃ na tadvyabhicāradhvananena gatārthayeḥ/ sthāyipratītir durapahnavā cet tulyaṃ prakṛte 'pi/ anantaroktapadye tu notsāhaḥ pratīyate/ dayāvīrādiṣu pratīyata iti tu rājājñāmātram/ adbhuto yathā-- "carācarajagajjālasadanaṃ vadanaṃ tava/ galadgaganagāmbhīryaṃ vīkṣyāsmi hṛtacetanā//" kadācid bhagavato vāsudevasya vadanam ālokitavatyā yaśodāyā iyam uktiḥ/ atra vadanam ālambanam/ antargatacarācarajagajjāladarśanam uddīpanam/ hṛtacetanatvam, tena gamyaṃ romāñcanetrasphāraṇādi cānubhāvaḥ/ trāsādayo vyabhicāriṇaḥ/ naivātra vidyamānāpi putragatā prītiḥ pratīyate/ vyañjakābhāvāt/ pratītāyāṃ vā tasyāṃ vismayasya guṇatvaṃ na yujyate/ evaṃ kaścin mahāpuruṣo 'yam iti bhaktir api tasyāḥ mamāyaṃ bāla iti niścayena pratibandhād utpattam eva neṣṭe/ atas tasyām api vismayasya guṇībhāvo na śaṅkyaḥ/ yat tu sahṛdayaśiromaṇibhiḥ prācīnair udāhṛtam-- "citraṃ mahān eṣa navāvatāraḥ, kva kāntir eṣābhinavaiva bhaṅgiḥ/ lokottaraṃ dhairyam aho prabhāvaḥ kāpy ākṛtir nūtana eṣa sargaḥ// iti, tatredaṃ vaktavyam-- pratīyatāṃ nāmātra vismayaḥ paraṃ tv asau kathaṃkāraṃ adbhutarasa] dhvanivyapadeśahetuḥ/ pratipādyamahāpuruṣaviśeṣaviṣayāyāḥ pradhānībhūtāyāḥ stotṛgatabhaktaḥ prakarṣakatvenāsya guṇībhūtatvāt/ yathā mahābhārate gītāsu viśvarūpaṃ dṛṣṭavataḥ pārthasya "paśyāmi devāṃs tava deva dehe sarvāṃs tathā bhūtaviśeṣasaṃghān" ity ādau vākyasaṃdarbhe/ itthaṃ cāsya rasālaṃkāratvam ucitam/ bhaktir naivātra pratīyata iti ced daramukulitalocanaṃ vidāṃkurvantu sahṛdayāḥ/ hāsyo yathā-- "śrītātapādair vihite nibandhe nirūpitā nūtanayuktir eṣā/ aṅgaṃ gavāṃ pūrvam aho pavitraṃ na vā kathaṃ rāsabhadharmapatnyāḥ//" tārkikaputro 'trālambanam/ tadīyā niḥśaṅkoktir uddīpikā/ radanaprakāśādir udvegādayaś cānubhāvavyabhicāriṇaḥ/ atrāhuḥ- "ātmasthaḥ parasaṃsthaścety asya bhedadvayaṃ matam/ ātmastho draṣṭur utpanno vibhāvekṣaṇamātrataḥ//
hasantam aparaṃ dṛṣṭvāvibhāvaḥ copajāyate/ yo 'sau hāsyarasas tajjñaiḥ parasthaḥ parikīrtitaḥ//
uttamānāṃ madhyamānāṃ nīcānām apy asau bhavet/ tryavasthaḥ kathitas tasya ṣaḍbhedāḥ santi cāpare//
smitaṃ ca hasitaṃ proktam uttame puruṣe budhaiḥ/ bhaved vihasitaṃ copahasitaṃ madhyame nare//
nīce 'pahasitaṃ cātihasitaṃ parikīrtitam/ īṣaphullakapolābhyāṃ kaṭākṣair apy analbaṇaiḥ//
adṛśyadaśano hāso madhuraḥ smitam ucyate/ vaktranetrakapolaiś ced utphullair upalakṣitaḥ//
kiṃcillakṣitadantaś ca tadā hasitam iṣyate/ saśabdaṃ madhuraṃ kāyagataṃ vadanarāgavat//
ākuñcitākṣi mandraṃ ca vidur vihasitaṃ budhāḥ/ nikuñcitāṃsaśīrṣaś ca jihmadṛṣṭivilokanaḥ//
utphullanāsiko hāso nāmnopahasitaṃ matam/ asthānajaḥ sāśrudṛṣṭir ākampaskandhamūrdhajaḥ//
śārṅgadevena gadito hāso 'pahasitāhvayaḥ/ sthūlakarṇakaṭudhvāno bāṣpapūraplutekṣaṇaḥ/ karopagūḍhapārśvaś ca hāso 'tihasitaṃ matam// iti//
bhayānako yathā-- "śyenam ambaratalād upāgataṃ śuṣyadānanabilo vilokayan/ kampamānatanur ākulekṣaṇāḥ spandituṃ na hi śaśāka lāvakaḥ//"
atra śyena ālambanam/ savegāpatanam uddīpanam/ ānanaśoṣādayo 'nubhāvāḥ/ dainyādayaḥ saṃcāriṇaḥ/ bībhatso yathā-- "nakhair vidāritāntrāṇāṃ śavānāṃ pūyaśoṇitam/ ānaneṣv anulimpanti hṛṣṭā vetālayoṣitaḥ//" śavā ihālambanam/ antravidāraṇādy uddīpanam/ ākṣiptā romāñcanetranimīlanādayo 'nubhāvāḥ/ āvegādayaḥ saṃcāriṇaḥ/ nanu ratikrodhotsāhabhayaśokavismayanirvedeṣu prāg udāhṛteṣu yathālambanāśrayayoḥ saṃpratyayaḥ na tathā hāse jugupsāyāṃ ca/ tatrālambanasyaiva pratīteḥ/ padyaśrotuś ca rasāsvādādhikaraṇatvena laukikahāsajugupsāśrayatvānupapatter iti cet/ satyam/ tadāśrayasya draṣṭṛpuruṣaviśeṣasya tatrākṣepyatvāt/ tadanākṣepe tu śrotuḥ svīyakāntāvarṇanapadyād iva rasodbodhe bādhakābhāvāt/ evaṃ saṃkṣepeṇa nirūpitā rasāḥ/ eṣāṃ prādhānye dhvanivyapadeśahetutvam guṇībhāve tu rasālaṃkāratvam/ kecit tu "prādhānya evaiṣāṃ rasatvam anyathālaṃkāratvam eva/ rasālaṃkāravyapadeśas tv alaṃkāradhvanivyapadeśavat, brāhmaṇaśramaṇanyāyāt/ evam asaṃlakṣyakramatāyām eva/ anyathā tu vastumātram" ity āhuḥ/ ete cāsaṃlakṣyakramavyaṅgyāḥ sahṛdayena rasavyaktau jhagiti jāyamānāyāṃ vibhāvānubhāvavyabhicārivimarśakramasya sato 'pi sūcīśatapattraśatavedhakramasyevālakṣaṇāt, na tv akramavyaṅgyaḥ, vyaktes taddhetūnāṃ ca hetuhetumadbhāvāsaṃgatyāpatteḥ/ atha katham eta eva rasāḥ/ bhagavadālambanasya romāñcāśrupātādibhir anubhāvitasya harṣādibhiḥ paripoṣitasya bhāgavatādipurāṇaśravaṇasamaye bhagavadbhaktair anubhūyamānasya bhaktirasasya durapahnavatvāt/ bhagavadanurāgarūpā bhaktiś cātra sthāyibhāvaḥ/ na cāsau śāntarase 'ntarbhāvam arhati/ anurāgasya vairāgyaviruddhatvāt/ ucyate-- bhakter devādiviṣayaratitvena bhāvāntargatatayā rasatvānupapatteḥ/ "ratir devādiviṣayā vyabhicārī tathāñjitaḥ/ bhāvaḥ proktas tadābhāsā hy anaucityapravartitāḥ//" iti hi prācāṃ siddhāntāt/ na ca tarhi kāminīviṣayāyā api rater bhāvatvam astu, ratitvāviśeṣāt/ astu vā bhagavadbhakter eva sthāyitvam, kāminyādiratīnāṃ ca bhāvatvam vinigamakābhāvāt, iti vācyam/ bharatādimunivacanānām evātra rasabhāvatvādivyavasthāpakatvena svātantryayogāt/ anyathā putrādiviṣayāyā api rateḥ sthāyibhāvatvaṃ kuto na syāt/ na syād vā kutaḥ śuddhabhāvatvaṃ jugupsāśokādīnām ity akhiladarśanaṃ vyākulī syāt/ rasānāṃ navatvagaṇanā ca munivacananiyantritā bhajyeta, iti yathāśāstram eva jyāyaḥ/ eteṣāṃ parasparaṃ kair api virodhaḥ/ tatra vīraśṛṅgārayoḥ, śṛṅgārahāsyayoḥ, vīrādbhutayoḥ, vīraraudrayoḥ, śṛṅgārādbhutayoś cāvirodhaḥ/ śṛṅgārabībhatsayoḥ śṛṅgārakaruṇayoḥ, vīrabhayānakayoḥ, śāntaraudrayoḥ, śāntaśṛṅgārayoś ca virodhaḥ/ atra kavinā prakṛtarasaṃ paripoṣṭukāmena tadabhivyañjake kāvye tadviruddharasāṅgānāṃ nibandhanaṃ na kāryam/ yathā hi sati tadabhivyaktau viruddhaḥ prakṛtaṃ bādheta/ sundopasundanyāyena vobhayor upahatiḥ syāt/ yadi tu viruddhayor api rasayor ekatra samāveśa iṣyate tadā virodhaṃ parihṛtya vidheyaḥ/ tathā hi-- virodhas tāvad dvividhaḥ/ sthitivirodho jñānavirodhaś ca/ ādyas tadadhikaraṇāvṛttitārūpaḥ/ dvitīyas tajjñānapratibaddhajñānakatvalakṣaṇaḥ/ tatrādhikaraṇāntare virodhinaḥ sthāpane prathamo nivartate/ yathā nāyakagatatvena vīrarase varṇanīye pratināyake bhayānakasya/ rasapadenātra prakaraṇe tadupādhiḥ sthāyibhāvo gṛhyate/ rasasya sāmājikavṛttitvena nāyakādyavṛttitvāt/ advitīyānandamayatvena virodhāsambhavāc ca/ udāharaṇam-- "kuṇḍalīkṛtakodaṇḍadordaṇḍasya puras tava/ mṛgārāter iva mṛgāḥ pare naivāvatasthire//" rasāntarasyāvirodhinaḥ saṃdhikartur ivāntarāle 'vasthāne dvitīyo 'pi nivartate/ yathā mannirmitāyām ākhyāyikāyāṃ kaṇvāśramagatasya śvetaketor maharṣeḥ śāntarasapradhāne varṇane prastute "kim idam anākalitapūrvaṃ rūpam, ko 'yam anirvācyo vacanaracanāyā madhurimā" ity adbhutasyāntaravasthāpanena varavarṇinīṃ pratyanurāgavarṇane/ yathā vā-- "surāṅganābhir āśliṣṭā vyomni vīrā vimānagāḥ/ vilokante nijān dehān pherunārībhir āvṛtān//" atra surāṅganāmṛtaśarīrālambanayoḥ śṛṅgārabībhatsayor antaḥ svargalābhākṣipto vīraraso niveśitaḥ/ antarniveśaś ca tadubhayacarvaṇākālāntarvartikālagatacarvaṇākatvam/ tac ca prakṛtapadye prathamārdha eva śṛṅgāracarvaṇottaraṃ vīrasya carvaṇād anantaraṃ ca dvitīyārdhe bībhatsasyeti sphuṭam eva/ "bhūreṇudigdhān" ity ādi kāvyaprakāśagatapadyakadambetu prathamaśrutabībhatsasāmagrīvaśād bībhatsacarvaṇottaraṃ tatsāmagryākṣiptaniḥśaṅkaprāṇatyāgādirūpasāmagrīkasya vīrasya carvaṇe śṛṅgāracarvaṇeti vivekaḥ/ itthaṃ codāsīnacarvaṇena pratibandhakajñānanivṛttau niṣpratyūhaḥ pratibadhyacarvaṇodaya iti phalito 'rthaḥ/ aṅgāṅginoḥ, aṅginy anyasminn aṅgayor vā na virodhaḥ/ aṅgatvānupapattiprasaṅgāt/ yathā-- pratyudgatā savinayaṃ sahasā sakhībhiḥ smeraiḥ smarasya sacivaiḥ sarasāvalokaiḥ/ mām adya mañjuracanair vacanaiś ca bāle hā leśato 'pi na kathaṃ vada satkaroṣi//
iyaṃ ca puro nipatitāṃ pramītāṃ nāyikāṃ prati nāyakasyoktiḥ/ iha nāyikālambanā, aśrupātādibhir anubhāvair āvegaviṣādādibhiḥ saṃcāribhiś ca vyajyamānā nāyakagatā ratis tulyasāmagryabhivyakte prakṛtatvāt pradhānībhūte tadgata eva śoke prakarṣakatvād aṅgam/ yadi tu nāyakagatā ratir nātra pratīyate, kiṃ tu niruktasāmagryā śoka eva prakṛtatvād ity āgṛhyate tadā nāyakālambanā pratyudgamādyanubhāvitā harṣādibhiḥ poṣitā nāyikāśrayā ratir eva tatrāṅgam astu/ nāyikāgatarater nāyakaśokaprakarṣahetutāyāḥ sarvasaṃmatatvāt/ na ca nāyikāyā nāśāt tadgatāyā rater asaṃnidhānāt katham aṅgateti vācyam/ saṃnidhānasyāṅgatāyām atantratvena smaryamāṇāyās tasyā aṅgatvopapatteḥ/ aṅgayor yathā-- "utkṣiptāḥ kabarībharaṃ, vivalitāḥ pārśvadvayaṃ nyakkṛtāḥ pādāmbhojayugaṃ ruṣā parihṛtā dūreṇa celāñcalam/ gṛhṇanti tvarayā bhavatpratibhaṭakṣmāpālavāmabhruvāṃ yāntīnāṃ gahaneṣu kaṇṭakacitāḥ ke ke na bhūmīruhāḥ//" atra samāsoktyavayavābhyāṃ tarukāmikartṛkaripukāminīkabaryādigrahaṇarūpābhyāṃ prakṛtāprakṛtavyavahārābhyāṃ vyaktayoḥ karuṇaśṛṅgārayo rājaviṣayakaratibhāvāṅgatvam/ kiṃ ca prakṛtarasaparipuṣṭim icchatā virodhino 'pi rasasya bādhyatvena nibandhanaṃ kāryam eva/ tathā hi sati vairivijayakṛtā varṇyasya kāpi śobhā saṃpadyate/ bādhyatvaṃ ca rasasya prabalair virodhino rasasyāṅgair vidyamāneṣv api svāṅgeṣu niṣpitteḥ pratibandhaḥ/ vyabhicāriṇo bādhyatvaṃ tu tadīyarasaniṣpattipratibandhamātrāt, na tv anabhivyattayā/ ābhivyaktau bādhakābhāvāt/ na ca virodhyaṅgābhivyatyā pratibandhān nābhivyaktir iti vācyam/ tadvyañjakaśabdārthajñānasamaye virodhyaṅgābhivyañjakaśabdārthajñānasyāsaṃnidhānāt/ pratibadhyapratibandhakabhāvakalpane mānābhāvāt, bhāvaśabalatāyā ucchedāpatteś ca/ rasaniṣpatteḥ pratibandhas tv anubhavasiddha iti tāṃ praty eva virodhyaṅgānāṃ balavatām abhivyakteḥ pratibandhakatvaṃ nyāyyam/ api ca yatra sādhāraṇaviśeṣaṇamahimnā viruddhayor abhivyaktis tatrāpi virodho nivartate/ yathā-- "nitāntaṃ yauvanonmattā gāḍharaktāḥ sadāhave/ vasundharāṃ samāliṅgya śerate vīra te 'rayaḥ//" ittham avirodhasaṃpādanenāpi nibadhyamāno raso rasaśabdena śṛṅgārādiśabdair vā nābhidhātum ucitaḥ, anāsvādyatāpatteḥ/ tadāsvādaś ca vyañjanamātraniṣpādya ity uktatvāt/ yatra vibhāvādibhir abhivyaktasya rasasya svaśabdenābhidhānaṃ tatra ko doṣa iti cet, vyaṅgyasya vācyīkaraṇe sāmānyato vamanākhyadoṣasya vakṣyamāṇatvāt/ āsvādyatāvacchedakarūpeṇa pratyayājanakatayā rasasthale vācyavṛtteḥ kāpeyakalpatvena viśeṣadoṣatvāc ca/ evaṃ sthāyivyabhicāriṇām api śabdavācyatvaṃ doṣaḥ/ evaṃ vibhāvānubhāvayor asamyakpratyaye vilambena pratyaye vā na rasāsvāda iti tayor doṣatvam/ samabalaprabalapratikūlarasāṅgānāṃ nibandhanaṃ tu prakṛtarasapoṣaprātīpikam iti doṣaḥ/ prabandhe prakṛtasya prasaṅgāntareṇa vicchinnasya punardīpane sāmājikānāṃ na sāmagryeṇa rasāsvāda iti vicchinnadīpanaṃ doṣaḥ/ tathā tattadrasaprastāvanānarhe 'vasare prastāvaḥ, vicchedānarhe ca vicchedaḥ/ yathā sandhyāvandanadevayajanādidharmavarṇane prasakte kayāpi kāminyā saha kasyacitkāmukasyānurāgavarṇane/ yathā ca samupasthiteṣu mahāhavadurmadeṣu pratibhaṭeṣu marmabhindi vacanāny udgiratsu nāyakasya saṃdhyāvandanādivarṇane cety ubhayam anucitam/ evam apradhānasya pratināyakāder nānāvidhānāṃ caritānām anekavidhāyāś ca saṃpado nāyakasambandhibhyas tebhyo nātiśayo varṇanīyaḥ/ yathā sati varṇayitumiṣṭo nāyakasyotkarṣo na siddhyet/ tatprayukto rasapoṣaś ca na syāt/ na ca pratināyakotkarṣasya tadabhibhāvakanāyakotkarṣāṅgatvāt katham avarṇanīyatvam iti vācyam/ yādṛśasya pratināyakotkarṣavarṇanasya tadabhibhāvakanāyakotkarṣāṅgatāsaṃpādakatvaṃ tādṛśasyeṣṭatvāt/ tadvirodhina eva niṣedhyatvāt/ na ca pratipakṣasya prakṛtāpekṣayā varṇyamāno 'py utkarṣaḥ svāśrayahantṛtāmātrād eva prakṛtagatam utkarṣam atiśāyayet, ato na doṣāvaha iti vācyam/ evaṃ hi sati mahārājaṃ kam api viṣaśarakṣepamātreṇa vyāpāditavato varākasya śabarasyeva prakṛtasya nāyakasya na ko 'py utkarṣaḥ syād iti/ tathā rasālambanāśrayayor anusaṃdhānam antarāntarā viratā na ced, doṣaḥ/ tadanusaṃdhānādhīnā hi rasapratipattidhārā tadananusaṃdhāne viratā syāt/ evaṃ prakṛtarasānupakārakasya vastuno varṇanam api prakṛtarasavirāmahetutvād doṣa eva/ anaucityaṃ tu rasabhaṅgahetutvāt pariharaṇīyam/ bhaṅgaś ca pānakādirasādau sikatādinipātajanitevāruṃtudatā/ tac ca jātideśakālavarṇāśramavayovasthāprakṛtivyavahārādeḥ prapañcajātasya tasya yasya yallokaśāstrasiddham ucitadravyaguṇakriyādi, tadbhedaḥ/ jātyāder anucitaṃ yathā--gavādes tejobalakāryāṇi parākramādīni, siṃhādeś ca sādhubhāvādīni/ svarge jarāvyādhyādi, bhūloke sudhāsevanādi/ śiśire jalavihārādīni, grīṣme vahnisevā/ brāhmaṇasya mṛgayā, bāhujasya pratigrahaḥ, śūdrasya nigamādhyayanam/ brahmacāriṇo yateś ca tāmbūlacarvaṇam, dāropasaṃgraḥ/ bālavṛddhayoḥ strīsevanam, yūnaś ca virāgaḥ/ daridrāṇām āḍhyācaraṇam, āḍhyānāṃ ca daridrācāraḥ/ prakṛtayo divyāḥ, adivyāḥ, divyādivyāś ca/ dhīrodāttadhīroddhatadhīralalitadhīraśāntā utsāhakrodhakāminīratinirvedapradhānā uttamamadhyamādhamāś ca/ tatra ratyādīnāṃ bhayātiriktasthāyibhāvānāṃ sarvatra samatve 'pi rateḥ saṃbhogarupāyā manuṣyeṣv ivottamadevatāsu sphuṭīkṛtasakalānubhāvavarṇanam anucitam/ krodhasya ca lokabhasmīkaraṇapaṭor dinarātrivyatyayādyanekāścaryakāriṇo divyeṣv ivādivyeṣu/ ālambanagatārādhyatvasyānubhāvagatamithyātvasya ca pratītyā rasānullāsāpatteḥ/ na ca sādhāraṇīkaraṇād ārādhyatvajñānānutpattir iti vācyam/ yatra sahṛdayānāṃ rasodbodhaḥ pramāṇasiddhas tatraiva sādhāraṇīkaraṇasya kalpanāt/ anyathā svamātṛviṣayakasvapitṛrativarṇane 'pi sahṛdayasya rasodbodhāpatteḥ/ jayadevādibhis tu gītagovindādiprabandheṣu sakalasahṛdayasaṃmato'yaṃ samayo madonmattamataṅgajair iva bhinna iti ca tannidarśanenedānīṃtanena tathā varṇayituṃ sāṃpratam/ tathā vidyāvayovarṇāśramatapobhir utkṛṣṭaiḥ svato 'pakṛṣṭeṣu na sabahumānena vacasā vyavahartavyam/ vyavahartavyaṃ cāpakṛṣṭair utkṛṣṭeṣu/ tatrāpi tatrabhavan bhagavann ityādibhiḥ saṃbodhanair munigurudevatāprabhṛtaya eva na rājādayaḥ, jātyottamair dvijair eva, nādhamaiḥ śūdrādibhiḥ, parameśvaretyādisaṃbodhanaiś cakravartina eva, na muniprabhṛtayaḥ saṃbodhyāḥ/ tathā nāhuḥ-- "anaucityād ṛte nānyad rasabhaṅgasya kāraṇam/ prasiddhaucityabandhas tu rasasyopaniṣatparā//" iti/ yāvatā tv anaucityena rasasya puṣṭis tāvat tu na vāryate, rasapratikūlasyaiva tasya niṣedhyatvāt/ ata eva-- "brahmann adhyayanasya naiṣa samayas tūṣṇīṃ bahiḥ sthīyatāṃ svalpaṃ jalpa bṛhaspate jaḍamate naiṣā sabhā vajriṇaḥ/ vīṇāṃ saṃhara nārada stutikathālāpair alaṃ tumburo sītārallakabhallabhagnahṛdayaḥ svastho na laṅkeśvaraḥ//" iti kasyacin nāṭakasya padye vipralambhaśṛṅgārāṅgībhūtavīrarasākṣepakaparamaiśvaryaparipoṣakatayā sthitadauvārikavacanasya brahmādyadhikṣepaparasyānaucityaṃ na doṣaḥ/ evam eva "ale le saddaḥsamuppāḍia hariyakusaggaṃthimayācchamālāpai vittivissambhia bālavihavaṃdaḥkaaṇā bamhaṇā" ity ādividūṣakavacane 'pi reśabdādiprayogasya tattathā, hāsyānuguṇatvāt/ eṣā hi digupadarśitā/ anayā sudhībhir anyad apy ūhyam/ raseṣu caiteṣu nigaditeṣu mādhuryaujaḥprasādākhyāṃs trīn guṇān āhuḥ/ tatra "śṛṅgāre saṃyogākhye yanmādhuryaṃ tato 'tiśayitaṃ karuṇe, tābhyāṃ vipralambhe , tebhyo 'pi śānte/ uttarottaram atiśayitāyāś cittadruter jananāt/ saṃyogaśṛṅgārāt karuṇaśāntayos tābhyām api vipralambhe" ity apare/ saṃyogaśṛṅgārāt karuṇavipralambhaśānteṣv atiśayitam eva na punas tatrāpi tāratamyam" ity anye/ tatra prathamacaramayor matayoḥ "karuṇe vipralambhe tacchānte cātiśayānvitam" iti prācāṃ sūtram anukūlam/ tasyottarasūtragatasya krameṇeti padasyāpakarṣānapakarṣābhyāṃ vyākhyādvayasya saṃbhavāt/ madhyasthe tu mate karuṇaśāntābhyāṃ vipralambhasya mādhuryātiśaye yadi sahṛdayānām anubhavo 'sti sākṣī tadā sa pramāṇam/ vīrabībhatsaraudreṣv ojaso yathottaram atiśayaḥ, uttarottaram atiśayitāyāś cittadīpter jananāt/ adbhutahāsyabhayānakānāṃ guṇadvayayogitvaṃ kecid icchanti/ apare tu prasādamātram/ prasādas tu sarveṣu raseṣu sarvāsu racanāsu ca sādhāraṇaḥ/ guṇānāṃ caiṣāṃ drutidīptivikāsākhyās tisraś cittavṛttayaḥ krameṇa prayojyāḥ/ tattadguṇaviśiṣṭarasacarvaṇājanyā iti yāvat/ evam eteṣu guṇeṣu rasamātradharmeṣu vyavasiteṣu madhurā racanā, ojasvī bandha ity ādayo vyavahārā ākāro 'sya śūra ity ādivyavahāravad aupacārikā iti mammaṭabhaṭṭādayaḥ/ ye 'mī mādhuryaujaḥ prasādārasamātradharmatayoktās teṣāṃ rasadharmatve kiṃ mānam? pratyakṣam eveti cet, na/ dāhādeḥ kāryād analagatasyoṣṇasparśasya yathā bhinnatayānubhavas tathā drutyādicittavṛttibhyo rasakāryebhyo 'nyeṣāṃ rasagataguṇānām ananubhavāt/ tādṛśaguṇaviśiṣṭarasānāṃ drutyādikāraṇatvāt kāraṇatāvacchedakatayā guṇānām anumānam iti cet, prātisvikarūpeṇaiva rasānāṃ kāraṇatopapattau guṇakalpane gauravāt/ śṛṅgārakaruṇaśāntānāṃ mādhuryavattvena drutikāraṇatvaṃ, prātisvikarūpeṇa kāraṇatvakalpanāpekṣayā laghubhūtam iti tu na vācyam/ pareṇa madhuratarādiguṇānāṃ pṛthag drutataratvādi kāryatāratamyaprayojakatayābhyupagamena mādhuryavattvena kāraṇatāyā gaḍubhūtatvāt/ itthaṃ ca prātisvikarūpeṇaiva kāraṇatve lāghavam/ kiṃ cātmano nirguṇatayātmarūparasaguṇatvaṃ mādhuryādīnām anupapannam/ evaṃ tadupādhiratyādiguṇatvam api, mānābhāvāt, pararītyā guṇe guṇāntarasyānaucityāc ca/ atha śṛṅgāro madhura ity ādivyavahāraḥ katham iti cet, evaṃ tarhi drutyādicittavṛttiprayojakatvam, prayojakatāsaṃbandhena drutyādikam eva vā mādhuryādikam astu/ vyavahāras tu vājigandhoṣṇetivyavahāravad akṣataḥ/ prayojakatvaṃ cādṛṣṭādivilakṣaṇaṃ śabdārtharasaracanāgatam eva grāhyam/ ato na vyavahārātiprasaktiḥ/ tathā ca śabdārthayor api mādhuryāder īdṛśasya sattvād upacāro naiva kalpya iti tu mādṛśāḥ/ jarattarās tu-- śleṣaḥ prasādaḥ samatā mādhuryaṃ sukumāratā/ arthavyaktir udāratvam ojaḥkāntisamādhayaḥ//" iti daśā śabdaguṇān, daśaiva cārthaguṇān āmananti/ nāmāni punas tāny eva, lakṣaṇaṃ tu bhinnam/ tathā hi--
yadāhuḥ- "śliṣṭam aspaṣṭaśaithilyam" iti/ yathā--"anavaratavidvaddrumadrohidāridryamādyaddvipoddāmadarpaughavidrāvaṇaprauḍhapañcānanaḥ iti/
yathā-- "kiṃ brūmas tava vīratāṃ vayam amī, yasmin dharākhaṇḍala- krīḍākuṇḍalitabhruśoṇanayane dormaṇḍalaṃ paśyasi/ māṇikyāvalikāntidanturatarair bhūṣāsahastrotsarair vindhyāraṇyaguhāgṛhāvaniruhās tatkālam ullāsitāḥ//" atra yasminn ityantaṃ śaithilyam, bhruśabdāntaṃ gāḍhatvam, punar nayanetyantaṃ prathamam ityādi bodhyam/
yathā vakṣyamāṇamādhuryodāharaṇe/ tatra hy upanāgarikayaivopakramasaṃhārau/
yathā-- "nitarāṃ paruṣā sarojamālā na mṛṇālāni vicārapeśalāni/ yadi komalatā tavāṅgakānām atha kā nāma kathāpi pallavānām//"
yathā-- svedāmbusāndrakaṇaśālikapolapālidolāyitaśravaṇakuṇḍalavandanīyā/ ānandam aṅkurayati smaraṇena kāpi ramyā daśā manasi me madirekṣaṇāyāḥ//" atra pūrvārdhe/ uttarārdhe tu mādhuryam api/
yathā "nitarām" ityādau/
yathā-- "pramodabharatundilapramathadattatālāvalī- vinodini vināyake ḍamaruḍiṇḍimadhvānini/ lalāṭataṭavisphuṭannavakṛpīṭayonicchaṭo haṭhoddhatajaṭodbhaṭo gatapaṭo naṭo nṛtyati//" "padānāṃ nṛtyatprāyatvaṃ vikaṭatā" iti kāvyaprakāśaṭīkākārā vyācakṣate/ udāharanti ca "svacaraṇaviniviṣṭair nūpurair nartakīnāṃ jhaṭiti raṇitam āsīt" ityādi/ tatra teṣām etādṛśīṃ vikaṭatvalakṣaṇām udāratām ojasy antarbhāvayan kāvyaprakāśakāraḥ katham anukūla iti ta eva jānanti/ na hy atraujaso vaipulyena pratibhānam asti/ "viniviṣṭair nūpurair narta-" ity atra sannapy ojaso lavo na camatkārī/ nāpi tatra nṛtyatprāyatvaṃ varṇānām anubhavanti sahṛdayāḥ/ aṃśāntare tu mādhuryam eva/
yathā-- "sāhaṃkārasurāsurāvalikarākṛṣṭabhramanmandara- kṣubhyatkṣīradhivalguvīcivalayaśrīgarvasarvaṃkaṣāḥ/ tṛṣṇātāmyadamandatāpasakulaiḥ sānandam ālokitā bhūmībhūṣaṇa bhūṣayanti bhūvanābhogaṃ bhavatkīrtayaḥ//" yathā vā "ayaṃ patatu nirdayam" ityādiprāg udāhṛte/
yathā "nitarām" ityādi prāg udāhṛte/
anayor eva prācīnair ārohāvarohavyapadeśaḥ kṛtaḥ/ krama eva hi tayoḥ prasādād asya bhedakaḥ/ tatra hi tayor vyutkrameṇa vṛtteḥ/ yathā-- svarganirgatanirargalagaṅgātuṅgubhaṅgurataraṅgasakhānām/
kevalāmṛtamucāṃ vacanānāṃ yasya lāsyagṛham āsyasarojam//" atrārohaḥ prathame 'rdhe/ tṛtīyacaraṇe tv avarohaḥ/ gaṅgety ādau mādhuryasya vyañjakeṣu varṇeṣu satsv api dīrghasamāsāntaḥpātitayāna tasya prarohaḥ/ uttarārdhe tu so 'pi/ ete daśa śabdaguṇāḥ/
yathā-- "kamalānukāri vadanaṃ kila tasyāḥ" ityādi/ pratyudāharaṇaṃ tu "kamalakāntyanukāri vaktram" ityādi /
yathā-- "hariḥ pitā harirmātā harirbhrātā hariḥ suhṛt/ hariṃ sarvatra paśyāmi harer anyan na bhāti me//" atra viṣṇur bhrātety ādinirmāṇe prakramabhaṅgātmakaṃ vaiṣamyam/
yathā-- "vidhattāṃ niḥśaṅkaṃ niravadhisamādhiṃ vidhir aho sukhaṃ śeṣe śetāṃ harir avīrataṃ nṛtyatu haraḥ/ kṛtaṃ prāyaścittair alam atha tapodānayajanaiḥ
savitrī kāmānāṃ yadi jagati jāgarti bhavatī//" atra vidhyādibhir nāsti kim api prayojanam ity eṣo 'rthaḥ samādhividhānādipreraṇārūpeṇoktivaicitryeṇābhihitaḥ/ anyathānavīkṛtatvāpatteḥ/
yathā-- "tvarayā yāti pāntho 'yaṃ priyāvirahakātaraḥ"/ "priyāmaraṇakātaraḥ" ity atra tu śokadāyino maraṇaśabdasya sattvāt pāruṣyam/ idaṃ cāślīlatādoṣavyāpyam/
yathā-- gurumadhye kamalākṣī kamalākṣeṇa prahartukāmaṃ mām/ radayantritarasanāgraṃ taralitanayanaṃ nivārayāṃcakre//" ayam evedānīṃtanaiḥsvabhāvoktyalaṃkāra iti vyapadiśyate/
yad āhuḥ-- padārthe vākyaracanā vākyārthe ca padābhidhā/ prauḍhir vyāsasamāsau ca sābhiprāyatvam asya ca// iti/ pūrvārdhapratipādyaṃ dvayaṃ vyāsasamāsau ceti catuṣprakārā prauḍhiḥ, sābhiprāyatvaṃ ceti pañcaprakāram oja ity arthaḥ/ prauḍhiḥ pratipādanavaicitryam/ yathā-- "sarasijavanabandhuśrīsamārambhakāle rajaniramaṇarājye nāśam āśu prayāti/ paramapuruṣavaktrād udgatānāṃ narāṇāṃ madhumadhuragirāṃ ca prādurāsīd vinodaḥ//" atroṣasīty ekapadārthasyābhidhānāya prathamacaraṇaḥ/ ity ādyagre 'pi bodhyam/ "khaṇḍitānetrakañjālimañjurañjanapaṇḍitāḥ/ maṇḍitākhiladikprāntāś caṇḍāṃśor bhānti bhānavaḥ//" atra "yasyāḥ parāṅganāgehāt patiḥ prātargṛhe 'ñcati" iti vākyārthe khaṇḍitāpadābhidhānam/ "ayācitaḥ sukhaṃ datte yācitaś ca na yacchati/ sarvasvaṃ cāpi harate vidhir ucchṛṅkhalo nṛṇām//" atra daivādhīnaṃ sarvam ity ekasmin vākyārthe nānāvākyaracanātmako vyāsapadavācyo vistaraḥ/ "tapasyato muner vaktrād vedārtham adhigatya saḥ/ vāsudevaniviṣṭātmā viveśa param padam//" atra "munis tapasyati", "tadvaktrāt sa vedārtham adhigatavān", "tadanantaraṃ vāsudeve parabrahmaṇi manaḥ prāveśayat", "tataś ca mukto 'bhūd" iti vākyārthakalāpaḥ śatṛ-ktvā-bahuvrīhibhis tiṅantena cānuvādyavidheyabhāvenaikavākyārthīkṛtaḥ/ sābhiprāyatvaṃ caprakṛtārthapoṣakatā/ yathā-- "gaṇikājāmilamukhyānavatā bhavatā batāham api/ sīdanbhavamarugarte karuṇāmūrte na sarvathopekṣyaḥ//" atropekṣābhāve karuṇāmūrtitvaṃ poṣakam/ pāpiṣṭhavāt karuṇāyā abhāve prakṛte 'syāḥ saṃpādanāya gaṇikety ādi sīdann iti ca/
tac ca sphuṭapratīyamānarasatvam/ udāharaṇaṃ ca varṇitam eva rasaprakaraṇe, varṇayiṣyate ca/
jñānasya viṣayatāsaṃbandhenārthaniṣṭhatvād arthaguṇatā/ ādyo yathā-- "tanayamainākagaveṣaṇa" ityādau, dvitīyas tu prāyaśaḥ sarvatraivety āhuḥ/ apare tv eṣu guṇeṣu katipayān prāguktais tribhir guṇair vakṣyamāṇadoṣābhāvālaṃkāraiś ca gatārthayantaḥ kāṃścid vaicitryamātrarūpatayā, kvacid doṣatayā ca manyamānā na tāvataḥ svīkurvanti/ tathā hi-- śleṣodāratāprasādasamādhīnām ojovyañjakaghaṭanāyām antarbhāvaḥ/ na ca śleṣodāratayoḥ sarvāṃśe gāḍhabandhātmanor ojovyañjakaghaṭanāntarbhāvo 'stu nāma, prasādasamādhyos tu gāḍhaśithilātmanor aṃśenaujovyañjakāntarbhāve 'py aṃśāntareṇa kutrāntarbhāva iti vācyam/ mādhuryābhivyañjake prasādābhivyañjake veti suvacatvāt/ mādhuryaṃ tu pareṣām asmadabhyupagatamādhuryavyañjakam eva/ evaṃ ca sarvatra vyañjake vyaṅgyaśabdaprayogo bhāktaḥ/ samatā tu sarvatrānucitaiva/ pratipādyodbhaṭatvānudbhaṭatvābhyāmekasminn eva padye mārgabhedasyeṣṭatvāt/ yathā-- "nirmāṇe yadi mārmiko 'si nitarām atyantapākadravan-mṛdvīkāmadhumādhurīmadaparīhāroddhurāṇāṃ girām/ kāvyaṃ tarhi sakhe sukhena kathaya tvaṃ saṃmukhe mādṛśāṃ no ced duṣkṛtam ātmanā kṛtam iva svāntād bahir mā kṛthāḥ//" atra pūrvārdhe tṛtīyacaraṇe ca lokottaranirmāṇapratipādake yo mārgo na sa caturthacaraṇe kadaryakāvyapratipādaka iti vaiṣamyam eva guṇaḥ/ grāmyatvakaṣṭatvayos tyāgāt kāntisaukumāryayor gatārthatā/ prasādena cārthavyakter iti/ arthaguṇeṣv api-- śleṣaḥ ojasa ādyāś catvāro bhedāś ca uktivaicitryamātrarūpā iti na guṇāntarbhāvam arhanti/ anyathā pratiślokam arthavaicitryavailakṣaṇyād guṇabhedāpatteḥ/ anadhikapadatvātmā prasādaḥ, uktivaicitryavapur mādhuryam, apāruṣyaśarīraṃ saukumāryam, agrāmyarūpodāratā, vaiṣamyābhāvalakṣaṇā samatā, sābhiprāyatvātmakaḥ pañcama ojasaḥ prakāraḥ, svabhāvasphuṭatvātmikārthavyaktiḥ, sphuṭarasatvarūpā kāntiś ca, adhikapadatvānavīkṛtatvāmaṅgalarūpāślīlatvagrāmya-bhagnaprakramāpuṣṭārtharūpāṇāṃ doṣāṇāṃ nirākaraṇena svabhāvoktyalaṃkārasya rasadhvanirasavadalaṃkārayoś ca svīkaraṇena ca gatārthāni/ samādhis tu kavigataḥ kāvyasya kāraṇaṃ na tu guṇaḥ, pratibhāyā api kāvyaguṇatvāpatteḥ/ atas traya eva guṇā iti mammaṭabhaṭṭādayaḥ/ tatra ṭavargavarjitānāṃ vargāṇāṃ prathamatṛtīyaiḥ śarbhir antasthaiś ca ghaṭitā, naikaṭyena prayuktair anusvāraparasavarṇāiḥ śuddhānunāsikaiś ca śobhitā, vakṣyamāṇaiḥ sāmānyato viśeṣataś ca niṣiddhaiḥ saṃyogādyair acumbitā, avṛttir muduvṛttirvā racanānupūrvyātmikā mādhuryasya vyañjikā/ dvitīyacaturthās tu vargyā guṇasyāsya nānukūlāḥ, nāpi pratikūlāḥ, dūratayā saṃniveśitāś cet/ naikaṭyena tu pratikūlā api bhavanti, yadi tadāyatto nānuprāsaḥ/ anye tu vargasthānāṃ pañcānām apy aviśeṣeṇa mādhuryavyañjakatām āhuḥ/ udāharaṇam-- tāṃ tamālatarukāntilaṅghinīṃ kiṃkarīkṛtanavāmbudatviṣam svānta me kalaya śāntaye ciraṃ naicikīnayanacumbitāṃ śriyam//" yathā vā-- "svedāmbusāndrakaṇaśālikapolapālir antaḥsmitālasavilokanavandanīyā/ ānandam aṅkurayati smaraṇena kāpi ramyā daśā manasi me madirekṣaṇāyāḥ//" prathame padye 'tiśayoktyalaṃkṛtasya bhagavaddhyānautsukyasya bhagavadviṣayakarater vā dhvanyamānāyāḥ śānta eva paryavasānāt tadgatamādhuryasyābhivyañjikā racaneyam/ dvitīye tu smṛtyupaṣṭabdhaśṛṅgāragatasya/ naikaṭyena dvitīyacaturthavargavarṇaṭavargajihvāmūlīyopadhmānīyavisargasakārabahulair varṇāir ghaṭito jhayrephānyataraghaṭitasaṃyogaparahrasvaiś ca naikaṭyena prayuktair āliṅgito dīrghavṛttyātmā gumpha ojasaḥ/ asmin patitāḥ prathamatṛtīyavargyā guṇasyāsya nānukūlā nāpi pratikūlāḥ saṃyogāghaṭakāś cet/ tadghaṭakās tv anukūlā eva/ evam anusvāraparasavarṇā api/ yathā-- "ayaṃ patatu nirdayaṃ dalitadṛpta-" ity ādau prāgudāhṛte/ śrutamātrā vākyārtham karatalabadaram iva nivedayantī ghaṭanā prasādasya/ ayaṃ ca sarvasādhāraṇo guṇaḥ/ udāharaṇāny atra prāyaśo madīyāni sarvāṇy eva padyāni/ tathāpi yathā-- "cintāmīlitamānaso manasijaḥ sakhyo vihīnaprabhāḥ prāṇeśaḥ praṇayākulaḥ punar asāv āstāṃ samastā kathā/ etat tvāṃ vinivedayāmi mama ceduktiṃ hitāṃ manyase mugdhe mā kuru mānam ānanam idaṃ rākāpatir jeṣyati//" atra sarvāvacchedena prasādābhivyañjakatvam aṃśabhedena tu mādhuryaujobhivyañjakatvam api, manasijāntasya mā kurv ādeś ca mādhuryābhivyaktihetutvāt/ sakhya ityāder ojogamakatvāt/ nanv atra śṛṅgārāśrayasya mādhuryasyābhivyaktaye tadanukūlās tu nāma racanā, ojasas tu kaḥ prasaṅgo yad arthaṃ tadanukūlavarṇavinyāsa iti cet/ nāyikāmānopaśāntaye kṛtānekayatnāyās tadīyaṃ hitam upadiśantyāḥ sakhyāḥ sakrodhatvasya vyañjanīyatayā tathāvinyāsasya sāphalyāt/ kiṃ bahunā rasasyaujasvino 'marṣāder bhāvasya cāvivakṣāyām api vaktari kruddhatayā prasiddhe vācye vā krūratare ākhyāyikādau prabandhe vā, paruṣavarṇaghaṭaneṣyate/ yathā vā-- vācā nirmalayā sudhāmadhurayā yāṃ nātha śikṣāmadās tāṃ svapne 'pi na saṃspṛśāmy aham ahaṃbhāvāvṛto nistrapaḥ/ ity āgaḥśataśālinaṃ punar api svīyeṣu māṃ bibhratas tvatto nāsti dayānidhir yadupate matto na mattaḥ paraḥ//" atra guṇāntarāsamānādhikaraṇaḥ prasādaḥ/ idānīṃ tattadguṇavyañjanakṣamāyā nirmiteḥ paricayāya sāmānyato viśeṣataś ca varjanīyaṃ kiṃcin nirūpyate-- varṇānāṃ svānantaryaṃ sakṛdekapadagatatve kiṃcid aśravyam/ yathā-- "kakubhasurabhiḥ, vitatagātraḥ, palalam ivābhāti" ity ādau/ asakṛc ced adhikam// yathā-- "vitatatarastarur eṣa bhāti bhūmau"/ evaṃ bhinnapadagatatve 'pi/ yathā-- "śuka karoṣi kathaṃ vijane rucim" ity ādau/ asakṛdbhinnapadagatatve tato 'py adhikam/ yathā-- "pika kakubho mukharīkuru prakāmam"/ evaṃ svasamānavargyānantaryaṃ sakṛd ekapadagatatve kiṃcid aśravyam/ yathā-- "vitathas te manorathaḥ"/ asakṛc ced adhikam/ yathā-- "vitathataraṃ vacanaṃ tava pratīmaḥ"/ evaṃ bhinnapadagatatve/ yathā-- "atha tasya vacaḥ śrutvā" ity ādau/ asakṛd bhinnapadagatatve tu tato 'py adhikam/ "atha tathā kuru yena sukhaṃ labhe"/ etac ca vargāṇāṃ prathamadvitīyayos tṛtīyacaturthayor ānantaryam/ prathamatṛtīyayor dvitīyatṛtīyayor vānantaryaṃ tu tathā nāśrāvyam/ kiṃ tv īṣat, nirmāṇamārmikaikavedyam/ etad apy asakṛc cet tato 'dhikatvāt sādhāraṇair api vedyam/ yathā-- "khaga kalānidhir eṣa vijṛmbhate"/ "iti vadati divāniśaṃ sa dhanyaḥ"/ pañcamānāṃ madhuratvena svavargyānantaryaṃ na tathā/ yathā-- "tanute tanutāṃ tanau"/ svānantaryaṃ tv aśravyam eva/ yathā-- "mama mahatī manasi vyathāvirāsīt"/ etāni cāśravyatvāni guruvyavāyenāpodyante/ "saṃjāyatāṃ kathaṃkāraṃ kāke kekākalasvanaḥ"/ yathā vā-- "yathā yathā tāmarasāyatekṣaṇā mayā sarāgaṃ nitarāṃ niṣevitā/ tathā tathā tattvakatheva sarvato vikṛṣya mām ekarasaṃ cakāra sā//" idaṃ tu dīrghavyavāye/ saṃyogaparavyavāye tu-- sadā jayānuṣaṅgāṇām aṅgānāṃ saṃgarasthalam/ raṅgāṅgāṇam ivābhāti tattatturagatāṇḍavaiḥ//
idaṃ tu bodhyam-- gurur yayor vyavadhāyakas tayor eva varṇayor ānantaryakṛtam aśravyatvam apavadati/ tenātra thakāratakārānantaryakṛtadoṣāpavāde 'pi takārathakārānantaryakṛtam aśravyatvam anapoditam eva/ evaṃ tryādīnāṃ saṃyogo 'pi prāyeṇāśravyaḥ/ "rāṣṭre tavoṣṭryaḥ paritaś caranti" ity evamādayaḥ śṛutikāṭavabhedā anye 'py anubhavānusāreṇa bodhyāḥ/ atha dīrghānantaryaṃ saṃyogasya bhinnapadagatasya sakṛd apy aśravyam, asakṛt tu sutarām/ "hariṇīprekṣaṇā yatra gṛhiṇī na vilokyate/ sevitaṃ sarvasaṃpadbhir api tadbhavanaṃ vanam//" ekapadagatasya tu tathā nāśravyatvam/ yathā-- "jāgratā vicitaḥ panthāḥ śātravāṇāṃ vṛthodyamaḥ"/ parasavarṇakṛtasya tu saṃyogasya sarvathā dīrghād bhinnapadagatatvābhāvān madhuratvāc cānantaryaṃ na manāg apy aśravyam/ yathā-- "tāṃtamālatarukānti-" ity ādipadye/ atra tām ity atra nīm ity atra ca parasavarṇasya pūrvapadabhaktatayā na saṃyogo bhinnapadagataḥ/ pratyekaṃ saṃyogasaṃjñeti pakṣe 'pi bhinnapadagataḥ saṃyogo na dīrghād avyavahitaparaḥ/ navāmbudety atra tv ekādeśasya padadvayabhaktatayā dīrghād bhinnapadagatatve saty avyavahitottaratvaṃ yady api parasavarṇakṛtasaṃyogasya bhavati tathāpy atra bhinnapadagatatvam ekapadagatabhinnatvaṃ vivakṣitam ity adoṣaḥ/ asakṛt tu sutarām/ yathā-- "eṣāṃ priyā me kva gatā trapākulā"/ idaṃ cāśravyatvaṃ kāvyasya paṅgutvam iva pratīyate/ atha svecchayā saṃdhyakaraṇaṃ sakṛd apy aśravyam/ yathā-- "ramyāṇi indumukhi te kilakiñcitāni/ pragṛhyatāprayuktaṃ tv asakṛd eva/ aho amī indumukhīvilāsāḥ"/ evam eva ca ya-va-lopaprayuktam "apara iṣavaete kāminīnāṃ dṛgantāḥ"/ kathaṃ tarhi-- "bhujagāhitaprakṛtayo gāruḍamantrā ivāvanīramaṇa/ tārā iva turagā iva sukhalīnā mantriṇo bhavataḥ//" iti bhavadīyaṃ kāvyam iti ced akṛtvaiva yalopaṃ pāṭhān na doṣaḥ/ evaṃ rorutvasya hali lopasya yaṇguṇavṛddhisavarṇadīrghapūrvarūpādīnāṃ naikaṭyena bāhulyam aśravyatāhetuḥ/ evam ime sarve 'py aśravyabhedāḥ kāvyasāmānye varjanīyāḥ/ atha viśeṣato varjanīyāḥ/ tatra madhuraraseṣu ye viśeṣato varjanīyā anupadaṃ vakṣyante ta evaujasviṣv anukūlāḥ, ye cānukūlatayoktās te pratikūlā iti sāmānyato nirṇayaḥ/ madhuraraseṣu dīrghasamāsaṃ jhayghaṭitasaṃyogaparahrasvasya visarjanīyādeśasakārajihvāmūlīyopadhmānīyānāṃ ṭavargajhayāṃ rephahakārānyataraghaṭitasaṃyogasya halāṃ la-ma-na-bhinnānāṃ svātmanā saṃyogasya jhaydvayaghaṭitasaṃyogasya cāsakṛtprayogaṃ naikaṭyena varjayet/ savarṇajhaydvayaghaṭitasaṃyogasya śarbhinnamahāprāṇaghaṭitasaṃyogasya sakṛd apīti saṃkṣepaḥ/ dīrghasamāso yathā-- "lolālakāvalivalannayanāravinda-līlāvaśaṃvaditalokavilocanāyāḥ/ sāyāhani praṇayino bhavanaṃ vrajantyāś ceto na kasya harate gatir aṅganāyāḥ//" jhayghaṭitasaṃyogaparahrasvānāṃ prācuryaṃ naikaṭyena yathā-- "hīrasphuradradanaśubhrimaśobhi kiṃ ca sāndrāmṛtaṃ vadanam eṇavilocanāyāḥ/ vedhā vidhāya punar uktam ivendubimbaṃ dūrīkaroti na kathaṃ viduṣāṃ vareṇyaḥ//" atra bhriśabdaparyantaṃ śṛṅgārānanuguṇam/ śiṣṭaṃ tu ramaṇīyam/ uttarārdhe kakāratakārarūpajhaydvayasaṃyogasya sattve 'pi prācuryābhāvān na doṣaḥ/ yadi tu "dantāṃśukāntam aravindaramāpahāri sāndrāmṛtam, ity ādi kriyate tadā sarvam eva ramaṇīyam/ visargaprācuryaṃ yathā-- sānurāgās sānukampāś caturāś śītalāḥ/ haranti hṛdayaṃ hanta kāntāyās svāntavṛttayaḥ//
atra śakāradvayasaṃyogāntaṃ pūrvārdhaṃ mādhuryānanuguṇam/ jihvāmūlīprācuryaṃ yathā-- "kalitakuliśaghātāẖ ke 'pi khelanti vātāḥ kuśalam iha kathaṃ vā jāyatāṃ jīvite me/ ayam api bata guñjannāli mākandamaulau culukayati madīyāṃ cetanāṃ cañcarīkaḥ//" atra dvitīyajihvāmūlīyaparyantam ananuguṇaṃ mādhuryasya/ yadi ca "kathaya katham ivāśā jāyatāṃ jīvite me malayabhujagavāntā vānti vātāḥ kṛtāntāḥ" iti vidhīyate, tathā nāyaṃ doṣaḥ/ upadhmānīyaprācuryaṃ yathā-- "alakāḫ phaṇiśāvatulyaśīlā nayanāntāḫ paripuṅkhiteṣu līlāḥ/ capalopamitā khalu svayaṃ yā bata loke sukhasādhanaṃ kathaṃ sā//" atra dvāv upadhmānīyāv eva na śāntānuguṇau/ ṭavargajhayāṃ prācuryaṃ yathā-- "vacane tava yatra mādhurī sā hṛdi pūrṇā karuṇā ca komale 'bhūt/ adhunā hariṇākṣi hā kathaṃ vā kaṭutā tatra kaṭhoratāvirāsīt//" adhunā sakhi tatra hā kathaṃ vā gatir anyaiva vilokyate guṇānām" iti tv anuguṇam/ rephaghaṭitasaṃyogasyāsakṛt prayogo yathā-- tulām anālokya nijām akharvaṃ gaurāṅgi garvaṃ na kadāpi kuryāḥ/ lasanti nānāphalabhāravatyo latāḥ kiyatyo gahanāntareṣu//
yadi tu "tulām anālokya mahītale 'smin" iti nirmīyate tathā sādhu/ halāṃ la-ma-na-bhinnānāṃsvātmanā saṃyogasyāsakṛt prayogo yathā-- "vigaṇayya me nikāyyaṃ tām anuyāto 'si naiva tannyāyyam/" la-ma-nānāṃ svātmanā saṃyogas tu na tathā pāruṣyam āvahati/yathā-- "iyam ullasitā mukhasya śobhā pariphullaṃ nayanāmbujadvayaṃ te/ jaladālim ayaṃ jagadvitanvan kalitaḥ kvāpi kim āli nīlameghaḥ//" jhaydvayaghaṭitasaṃyogasya yathā-- "ā sāyaṃ salilabhare savitāram upāsya sādaraṃ tapasā/ adhunābjena manāk tava mānini tulanā mukhasyāptā//" atra dvitīyārdham aramyam/ "sarasijakulena saṃprati bhāmini te mukhatulādhigatā" iti tu sādhu/ savarṇa jhaydvayaghaṭitasaṃyogasya sakṛt prayogo yathā-- ayi mandasmitamadhuraṃ vadanaṃ tanvaṅgi yadi manāk kuruṣe/ adhunaiva kalaya śamitaṃ rākāramaṇasya hanta sāmrājyam//
nanv atra kakāradvayasaṃyogasya halghaṭitasvātmasaṃyogatvenaiva niṣedhāt ka-khasaṃyogasya mahāprāṇasaṃyoganiṣedhaviṣayatvāt tṛtīyasaṃyogasya cāsaṃbhavāt savarṇajhaydvayasaṃyoganiṣedho niravakāśa iti cet, na/ sakṛt prayogaviṣayatvenāsya pārthakyāt/ ānyathā "manāk kuruṣe" iti nirdoṣaṃ syāt/ mahāprāṇaghaṭitasaṃyogo yathā-- "ayi mṛgamadabinduṃ cedbhāle bāle samātanuṣe/" uttarārdhaṃ tu prācīnam eva/ evaṃ tvapratyayaṃ, yaṅantāni, yaṅalugantāny anyāni ca śābdikapriyāṇy api madhurarase na prayuñjīta/ evaṃ vyaṅgyacarvaṇātiriktayojanāviśeṣāpekṣānāpātato 'dhikacamatkāriṇo 'nuprāsanicayān yamakādīṃś ca saṃbhavato 'pi kavir na nibadhnīyāt/ yato hi te rasacarvaṇāyām anantarbhavantaḥ sahṛdayahṛdayaṃ svābhimukhaṃ vidadhānā rasaparāṅmukhaṃ vidadhīran/vipralambhe tu sutarām/ yato madhuratamatvenāsya nirmalasitānirmitapānakarasasyeva tanīyān api svātantryam āvahan padārthaḥ sahṛdayahṛdayāruṃtudatayāna sarvathaiva sāmānādhikaraṇyam arhati/ yad āhuḥ-- "dhvanyātmabhūte śṛṅgāre yamakādinibandhanam/ śaktāv api pramāditvaṃ vipralambhe viśeṣataḥ//" ye tu punar akliṣṭatayānunnataskandhatayā ca na pṛthag bhāvanām apekṣante, kiṃ tu rasacarvaṇāyām eva susukhaṃ gocarīkartuṃ śakyāḥ, na teṣām anuprāsādīnāṃ tyāgo yuktaḥ/ yathā-- "kastūrikātilakam āli vidhāya sāyaṃ smerānanā sapadi śīlaya saudhamaulim/ prauḍhiṃ bhajantu kumudāni mudām udārām ullāsayantu parito harito mukhāni//" ittham ete prasaṅgato madhurarasābhivyañjikāyāṃ racanāyāṃ saṃkṣepeṇa nirūpitā doṣāḥ/ "ebhir viśeṣaviṣayaiḥ sāmānyair api ca dūṣaṇai rahitā/ mādhuryabhārabhaṅgurasundarapadavarṇavinyāsā//
vyutpattim udgirantī nirmātur yā prasādayutā/ tāṃ vibudhā vaidarbhīṃ vadanti vṛttiṃ gṛhītaparipākām//
asyām udāhṛtāny eva kiyanty api padyāni/ yathā vā-- "āyātaiva niśā niśāpatikaraiḥ kīrṇaṃ diśām antaraṃ bhāminyo bhavaneṣu bhūṣaṇagaṇair ullāsayanti śriyam/ vāme mānam apākaroṣi na manāg adyāpi roṣeṇa te hā hā bālamṛṇālato 'py atitamāṃ tanvī tanus tāmyati//" asyāś ca rīter nirmāṇe kavinā nitarām avahitena bhāvyam/ anyathā tu paripākabhaṅgaḥ syāt/ yathāmarukakavipadye-- "śūnyaṃ vāsagṛhaṃ vilokya śayanād utthāya kiṃcicchanair nidrāvyājam upāgatasya suciraṃ nirvarṇya patyur mukham/ vistrabdhaṃ paricumbya jātapulakām ālokya gaṇḍasthalīṃ lajjānamramukhī priyeṇa hasatā bālā ciraṃ cumbitā//" atrotthāya kiṃcicchanair ity atra savarṇajhaydvayasaṃyogas tatrāpi naikaṭyeneti sutarām aśravyaḥ/ evaṃ jhayghaṭitasaṃyogaparahrasvasyāpi/ tathā śanair nidrety atra, nirvarṇya patyur mukham ity atra ca rephaghaṭitasaṃyogasya, jhayghaṭitasaṃyogaparahrasvasya ca prācuryam/ vistrabdham ity atra mahāprāṇaghaṭitasya, lajjety atra svātmasavarṇajhaydvayaghaṭitasya, mukhī priyeṇety atra bhinnapadagatadīrghānantarasya saṃyogasya, tathā ktvāpratyayasya pañcakṛtvaḥ, lokateś ca dhātor dviḥ prayogaḥ kaver nirmāṇasāmagrīdāridryaṃ prakāśayati/ ity alaṃ parakīyakāvyavimarśanena/ iti saṃkṣepeṇa nirūpitā rasāḥ/ atha bhāvadhvanir nirūpyate/ atha kiṃ bhāvatvam/ vibhāvānubhāvabhinnatve sati rasavyañjakatvam iti cet, rasakāvyavākye 'tivyāptyāpatteḥ/ arthadvārā śabdasyāpi vyañjakatvāt/ dvārāntaranirapekṣatvena vyañjakatve viśeṣite tv asaṃbhavaḥ prasajyeta/ bhāvasyāpi bhāvanādvāraiva vyañjakatvāt, bhāvanāyām ativyāptyāpatteś ca/ ata eva ca vibhāvānubhāvabhinnatvasyeva śabdabhinnatvasyāpi tadviśeṣaṇatve na nistāraḥ/ pradhānadhvanyamānabhāve rasavyañjakatābhāvād avyāptyāpatteś ca/ na ca tatrāpi prānte raso 'bhivyajyata eveti vācyam, bhāvadhvanivilopaprasaṅgāt/ bhāvacamatkāraprakarṣād bhāvadhvanitvam/ rasas tu tatra vyajyamāno 'py acamatkāritvān na dhvanivyapadeśahetur ity api na śakyaṃ vaditum/ camatkārarahitarasavyaktau mānābhāvāt/ rase hi dharmigrāhakamānenānandāṃśāvinābhāvasya prāg evāvedanāt/ astu vā prādhānyena dhvanyamānasyāpi bhāvasya prānte rasābhivyañjakatvam/ tathāpi deśakālavayovasthādinānāpadārthaghaṭite padyavākyārthe tathāpy ativyāptiḥ/ tasya vibhāvānubhāvabhinnatve sati rasābhivyañjakatvāt/ nāpi rasābhivyañjakacarvaṇāviṣayacittavṛttitvaṃ tattvam/bhāvādicarvaṇāyām atiprasaṅgavāraṇāya carvaṇāviṣayeti cittavṛttiviśeṣaṇam iti vācyam/ kālāgurudravaṃ sā hālāhalavadvijānatī nitarām/ api nīlotpalamālāṃ bālā vyālāvaliṃ kilāmunate//
ityatra hālāhalasadṛśatvaprakārajñāne ativyāpteḥ/ tasya vipralambhānubhāvatvena rasābhivyañjakacarvaṇāviṣayatvāt, cittavṛttitvāc ca/ nāpy akhaṇḍam/ tattve mānābhāvāt/ atrocyate--
yad āhuḥ-- "vyabhicāryañjito bhāvaḥ" iti/ harṣādīnāṃ ca sāmājikagatānām eva sthāyibhāvanyāyenābhivyaktiḥ/ sāpi rasanyāyeneti kecit/ vyaṅgyāntaranyāyenetyapare manyante/ vibhāvānubhāvau cātra vyañjakau/ na tv ekasmin vyābhicāriṇi dhvanyamāne vyabhicāryantaraṃ vyañjakatayāvaśyam apekṣyate, tasyaiva prādhānyāpatteḥ/ vastutas tu prakaraṇādivaśāt prādhānyam anubhavati kasmiṃś cid bhāve tadīyasāmagrīvyaṅgyatvena nāntarīyakatayā tanimānam āvahato vyabhicāryantarasyāṅgatve 'pi na kṣatiḥ/ yathā garvādāv amarṣasya, amarṣādau vā garvasya/ na caivaṃ sati guṇībhūtavyaṅgyatvāpattiḥ/ pṛthagvibhāvānubhāvābhivyaktasyaiva (bhāvasya), guṇībhūtavyaṅgyavyapadeśahetutvāt/ ata eva nāntarīyakasya bhāvasya dhvananaṃ bhavati/ anyathā garvādidhvaner uccheda eva bhavet/ vibhāvas tv atra vyabhicāriṇo nimittakāraṇasāmānyam/ na tu rasasyeva sarvathaivālambanoddīpane apekṣite/ yadi tu kvacit saṃbhavatas tadā na vāryete/ harṣādayas tu--
etena vātsalyākhyaṃ putrādyālambanaṃ rasāntaram iti parāstam/ ucchṛṅkhalatāyā munivacanaparāhatatvāt/
tatra
tad uktam-- "devabhartṛgurusvāmiprasādaḥ priyasaṃgamaḥ/ manorathāptir aprāpyamanoharadhanāgamaḥ/ tathotpattiś ca putrāder vibhāvo yatra jāyate/ netravaktraprasādaś ca priyoktiḥ pulakodgamaḥ//
aśrusvedādayaś cānubhāvā harṣaṃ tam ādiśet//" iti/ udāharaṇam-- "avadhau divasāvasānakāle bhavanadvāri vilocane dadhānā/ avalokya samāgataṃ tadā mām atha rāmā vikasanmukhī babhūva//" atrāvadhikāle priyāgamanaṃ vibhāvaḥ/ mukhavikāso 'nubhāvaḥ/
yathā-- "tanmañju mandahasitaṃ śvasitāni tāni sā vai kalaṅkavidhurā madhurānanaśrīḥ/ adyāpi me hṛdayam unmadayanti hanta sāyaṃtanāmbujasahodaralocanāyāḥ//" cintāviśeṣo 'tra vibhāvaḥ/ bhrūnnatigātraniścalatvādaya ākṣepagamyā anubhāvāḥ/ yady apy atrāsyā eva smṛteḥ saṃcāriṇyāḥ, nāyikārūpasya vibhāvasya, hantapadagamyasya hṛdayavaikalyarūpānubhāvasya saṃyogād vipralambharasābhivyakte rasadhvanitvaṃ śakyate vaktum tathāpi smṛter evātra puraḥsphūrtikatvāc camatkāritvāc ca taddhvanitvam uktam/ tadāder buddhisthaprakārāvacchinne śaktir iti naye buddheḥ śakyatāvacchedakānugamakatayā na vācyatāsaṃsparśaḥ/ buddhisthatvaṃ śakyatāvacchedakam iti naye 'pi smṛtitvena smṛter vyaktivedyataiva/ tasyāś cātra vākyavedyatve 'pi padasyaiva kurvadrūpatvāt padadhvaniviṣayatvam/ etena bhāvānāṃ padavyaṅgatve na vaicitryam iti parāstam/ sāyaṃtanāmbujopamānena nayanayor uttarottarādhikanimīlanonmukhatvadhvananadvārā tasyā ānandamagnatāprakāśaḥ/ "darānamatkaṃdharabandham īṣannimīlitasnigdhavilocanābjam/ analpaniḥśvāsabharālasāṅgaṃ smarāmi saṅgaṃ ciram aṅganāyāḥ//" ity atra smṛtir na bhāvaḥ, svaśabdena nivedanād avyaṅgyatvāt/ nāpi smaraṇālaṃkāraḥ, sādṛśyāmūlakatvāt/ sādṛśyamūlakasyaiva smaraṇasyālaṃkāratvam, anyasya tu vyañjitasya bhāvatvam iti siddhāntāt/ kiṃ tu vibhāva eva sundaratvāt kathaṃcid rasaparyavasāyī/
yathā-- "kucakalaśayugāntarmāmakīnaṃ nakhāṅkaṃ sapulakatanu mandaṃ mandam ālokamānā/ vinihitavadanaṃ māṃ vīkṣya bālā gavākṣe cakitanatanatāṅgī sadma sadyo viveśa//
atra priyasya darśanaṃ, tena nāyikākartṛkatatkucāntarvartipriyanakhakṣatāvalokanajanyaharṣāvedakatatpulakāder darśanaṃ ca vibhāvaḥ/ sadyaḥ sadanapraveśo 'nubhāvaḥ/ yathā vā-- "niruddhya yāntīṃ tarasā kapotīṃ kūjatkapotasya puro dadāne/ mayi smitārdraṃ vadanāravindaṃ sā mandamandaṃ namayāṃbabhūva//" pūrvatra trāsa ivātrāpi harṣo leśatayā sannapi vrīḍāyā anuguṇa eva/ priyakartṛkaṃ kapotasyāgre kapotyāḥ samarpaṇaṃ vibhāvaḥ/ vadananamanam anubhāvaḥ/
"avasthāntaraśabalitā sā tathā" iti tu navyāḥ/ udāharaṇam-- "viraheṇa vikalahṛdayā vilapantī dayita dayiteti/ āgatam api taṃ savidhe paricayahīneva vīkṣate bālā//" atra kāntaviyogo vibhāvaḥ/ indriyavaikalyaṃ lajjādyabhāvaś cānubhāvaḥ/ yathā vā-- "śuṇḍādaṇḍaṃ kuṇḍalīkṛtya kūle kallolinyāḥ kiṃcid ākuñcitākṣaḥ/ naivākarṣaty ambu naivāmbujāliṃ kāntāpetaḥ kṛtyaśūnyo gajendraḥ//"
udāharaṇam-- "saṃtāpayāmi hṛdayaṃ dhāvaṃ dhāvaṃ dharātale kim aham/ asti mama śirasi satataṃ nandakumāraḥ prabhuḥ paramaḥ//" atra vivekaśrutasaṃpattyādir vibhāvaḥ/ cāpalādyupaśamo 'nubhāvaḥ/ nanu cottarārdhe cintā nāstīti vastuno 'bhivyakteḥ katham asya dhṛtibhāvadhvanitvam iti cet, tasya dhṛtyupayogitayaivābhivyakteḥ/
udāharaṇam-- "vidhivañcitayā mayā na yātaṃ sakhi saṃketaniketanaṃ priyasya/ adhunā bata kiṃ vidhātukāmo mayi kāmo nṛpatiḥ punar na jāne//" atra rājāparādho vibhāvaḥ/ mukhavaivarṇyādaya ākṣepyā anubhāvāḥ/ iyaṃ tu bhayādyutpādanena kampādikāriṇī, na tu cintā/
yathā-- "śayitā śaivalaśayane suṣamāśeṣā navendulekheva/ priyam āgatam api savidhe satkurute madhuravīkṣaṇair eva//" atra priyaviraho vibhāvaḥ/ madhuravīkṣaṇair evety evakāreṇa bodhyamānā pratyudgamacaraṇanipatanāśleṣādīnāṃ nivṛttir anubhāvaḥ/ na cātra śramaḥ śaṅkyaḥ, kāraṇābhāvāt/ kecit tu vyādhyādiprabhavabalanāśaṃ glānim āhuḥ/ teṣāṃ mate cittavṛttyātmakeṣu bhāveṣu nāśarūpāyā glāneḥ kathaṃ samāveśa iti dhyeyam/ yady api "balasyāpacayo glānir ādhivyādhisamudbhavaḥ" iti lakṣaṇavākyād apacayaśabdena nāśa eva pratiyate, tathāpi prāg uktānupapattyā balanāśajanyaṃ duḥkham eva balāpacayaśabdena vivakṣitam/
udāharaṇam-- "hatakena mayā vanāntare vanajākṣī sahasā vivāsitā/ adhunā mama kutra sā satī patitasyeva parā sarasvatī//" sītāṃ parityaktavato bhagavataḥ śrīrāmabhadrasyeyam uktiḥ/ atra sītāparityāgarūpo 'parādhas tajjanyaṃ duḥkhaṃ vā vibhāvaḥ/ patitasāmyarūpasvāpakarṣabhāṣaṇam anubhāvaḥ/ yad āhuḥ-- "cintautsukyān manastāpād daurgatyāc ca vibhāvataḥ/ anubhāvāt tu śiraso 'bhyāvṛtter gātragauravāt//
dehopaskaraṇatyāgād dainyaṃ bhāvaṃ vibhāvayet//" iti/ "daurgatyāder anaujasyaṃ dainyaṃ malinatādikṛt/" iti ca/ atra hatakena mayā vivāsitā na tu vidhinety etasyārthasya patitopamayaiva paripoṣaḥ, na tu śūdrādyupamayā/ yataḥ śūdrasya jātyaiva śrutidaurlabhyaṃ vidhinā kṛtam/ patitasya tu brāhmaṇāder vidhinā śrutisulabhatve svabhāvena kṛte 'pi tenaiva tathāvidhaṃ pāpam ācaratā svataḥ śrutir dūrīkṛteti tasya patitena sāmyam, tasyāś ca śrutyety upamālaṃkāro dainyam evālaṃkurute/ tathā mayeti seti copādānalakṣaṇāmūladhvanibhyāṃ kṛtaghnatvakṛtajñātvanirdayatvadayāvatītvādyanekadharmaprakāśanadvārā tad eva paripoṣyate, seti smṛtyā ca leśataḥ pratīyamānayā/
yad āhuḥ-- "vibhāvā yatra dāridryam aiśvaryabhraṃśanaṃ tathā/ iṣṭārthāpahṛtiḥ śaśvacchvāsocchvāsāv adhomukham//
saṃtāpaḥ smaraṇaṃ caiva kārśyaṃ dehānupaskṛtiḥ/ adhṛtiś cānubhāvāḥ syuḥ sā cintā parikīrtitā//
vitarko 'syāḥ kṣaṇe pūrve pāścāttye vopajāyate//" iti/ "dhyānaṃ cintā hitānāpteḥ saṃtāpādikarī matā/" iti ca/ udāharaṇam- "adharadyutir astapallavā mukhaśobhā śaśikāntilaṅghinī/ akṛtapratimā tanuḥ kṛtā vidhinā kasya kṛte mṛgīdṛśaḥ//" atra tadaprāptir vibhāvaḥ/ anutāpādaya ākṣepyā anubhāvāḥ/ na cātrautsukyadhvanir iti vācyam/ kasya kṛtaity anirdhāritadharmyālambanāyāś cintāyā eva pratīyamānatayā sato 'py autsukyasyaitadvākyena prādhānyenā 'bodhanāt/
yadāhuḥ-- "saṃmohānandasaṃdoho mado madyopayogajaḥ/" iti/ tatrottame puruṣe svāpo 'nubhāvaḥ/ madhyame hasitagāne/ nīce tu rodanaparuṣoktyādi/ ayaṃ madas trividhaḥ, taruṇamadhyamādhamabhedāt/ avyaktāsaṃgatavākyaiḥ sukumāraskhaladgatyā ca yo 'bhinīyate sa ādyāḥ/ bhujākṣepaskhalitaghūrṇitādibhir madhyamaḥ/ gatibhaṅgasmṛtināśahikkācchardyābhir adhamaḥ/
udāharaṇam-- "madhurataraṃ smayamānaḥ svasminn evālapañ śanaiḥ kim api/ kokanadayaṃs trilokīm ālambanaśūnyam īkṣate kṣībaḥ//" atra mādakadravyasevanaṃ vibhāvaḥ/ avyaktālāpādy anubhāvaḥ/ atra mattasvabhāvavarṇanasya tanniṣṭhamadavyañjanārthatvān madabhāva eva pradhānam iti na svabhāvoktyalaṃkārasyaprādhānyam, api tu taddhvanyupaskārakatvam eva/ idaṃ vā punar udāharaṇam-- "madhurasān madhuraṃ hi tavādharaṃ taruṇi madvadane viniveśaya/ mama gṛhāṇa kareṇa karāmbujaṃ papapatāmi hahā bhabhabhūtale//" atrāpi sa eva vibhāvaḥ/ adhikavarṇoccāraṇādir anubhāvaḥ/ pūrvārdhagatā grāmyoktir uttarārdhe ca taruṇīkare 'mbujopameyatayā nirūpaṇīye svakarasya tadupameyatayā nirūpaṇaṃ ca madam eva poṣayataḥ/
yad ahuḥ-- "adhvavyāyāmasevādyair vibhāvair anubhāvakaiḥ/ gātrasaṃvāhanair āsya saṃkocair aṅgamoṭanaiḥ//
niḥśvāsairjṛmbhitair mandaiḥ pādotkṣepaiḥ śramo mataḥ//" iti/ "śramaḥ khedo 'dhvagatyāder nidrāśvāsādikṛnmataḥ/" iti ca/ ayaṃ ca saty api bale jāyate, śārīravyāpārād eva ca jāyate, na tu glāniḥ/ ato glāneḥ śramasya bhedaḥ/ udāharaṇam-- "vidhāya sā madvadanānukūlaṃ kapolamūlaṃ hṛdaye śayānā/ cirāya citre likhiteva tanvī na spandituṃ mandam api kṣamāsīt//" atra viparītasuratarūpaḥ śārīravyāpāro vibhāvaḥ/ spandarāhityaśayanādayo 'nubhāvāḥ/ na cātra nidrābhāvadhvananena gatārthateti śaṅkyam/ suṣuptau hi jñānarāhityenaiva yatnarāhityān mandam api spandituṃ na kṣamāsīd ity asyānatiprayojanakatvāpatteḥ, śīṅābhihitatayā tasyā vyaṅgyatvānupapatteś ca/ śrame tv ānuguṇyam ucitam/
udāharaṇam-- "ā mūlād ratnasānor malayavalayitād ā ca kūlāt payodher yāvantaḥ santi kāvyapraṇayanapaṭavas te viśaṅkaṃ vadantu/ mṛdvīkāmadhyaniryanmasṛṇarasajharīmādhurībhāgyabhājāṃ vācām ācāryatāyāḥ padam anubhavituṃ ko 'sti dhanyo madanyaḥ//" atra svakīyakavitāyā ananyasādhāraṇatājñānaṃ vibhāvaḥ/ parādhikṣepaparaitādṛśavākyaprayogo 'nubhāvaḥ/ imaṃ cāsūyāpi leśataḥ puṣṇāti/ utsāhapradhāno gūḍhagarvo hi vīrarasadhvaniḥ, ayaṃ tu garvapradhāna iti tasmād asya viśeṣaḥ/ tathā hi vīrarasaprasaṅge prāg udāhṛte "yadi vakti-"ityādi padye gīṣpatināgirām adhidevatayāpi sākam ahaṃ vadiṣyāmīti vacanenābhivyaktasyotsāhasya paripoṣakatayā sthitaḥ sarvebhyaḥ paṇḍitebhyo 'ham adhika iti garvaḥ, na tu prakṛtapadya iva nāsty eva mahītale madanya iti sphuṭoditena solluṇṭhavacanenānubhāvena prādhānyena pratīyamānaḥ/
netranimīlanagātraniṣkriyatvādayo 'syā anubhāvāḥ/ udāharaṇam-- "sā madāgamanabṛṃhitatoṣā jāgareṇa gamitākhiladoṣā/ bodhitāpi bubudhe madhūpair na prātar ānanajasaurabhalubdhaiḥ//" rātrijāgaraṇaśramo 'tra vibhāvaḥ/ madhupair bodhābhāvo 'nubhāvaḥ/
atra niḥśaṅkatadarthānuṣṭhānasaṃśayocchedādayo 'nubhāvāḥ/ udāharaṇam-- "nikhilaṃ jagad eva naśvaraṃ punar asmin nitarāṃ kalevaram/ atha tasya kṛte kiyānayaṃ kriyate hanta mayā pariśramaḥ//" "śarīram etajjalabudbudopamam" ityādiśāstraparyālocanam atra vibhāvaḥ/ hantapadagamyā svanindā rājasevādiviratir vitṛṣṇatā cānubhāvaḥ/ jhagiti mater eva camatkārād dhvanivyapadeśahetutā, na śāntasya, vilambena pratiteḥ/
gātraśaithilyaśvāsādayo 'trānubhāvāḥ/ yadāhuḥ-- "ekaikaśo dvandvaśo vā trayāṇāṃ vā prakopataḥ/ vātapittakaphānāṃ syur vyādhayo ye jvarādayaḥ//
iha tatprabhavo bhāvo vyādhir ity abhidhīyate//" udāharaṇam-- "hṛdaye kṛtaśaivalānuṣaṅgā muhur aṅgāni yatas tataḥ kṣipantī/ tadudantapare mukhe sakhīnām atidīnām iyam ādadhāti dṛṣṭim//" viraho 'tra vibhāvaḥ/ aṅgakṣepādir anubhāvaḥ/
anubhāvāś cāsya romāñcakampastambhabhramādayaḥ/ yadāhuḥ-- "autpātikair manaḥ kṣepas trāsaḥ kampādikārakaḥ/" udāharaṇam-- "ālīṣu kelīrabhasena bālā muhur mamālāpam upālapantī/" ārād upākarṇya giraṃ madīyāṃ saudāminīyāṃ suṣamā mayāsīt//
atra patyā svavacanākarṇanaṃ vibhāvaḥ/ palāyanam anubhāvaḥ/ na cātra lajjāyā vyaṅgyatvam āśaṅkanīyam/ śaiśavenaiva tasyā nirāsāt/ idaṃ vā viviktam udāharaṇam-- "mā kuru kaśāṃ karābje karuṇāvati kampate mama svāntam/ khelan na jātu gopair amba vilambaṃ kariṣyāmi//" eṣā bhagavato līlāgopakiśorasyoktiḥ/
svapna iti yāvat/ asyānubhāvaḥ pralāpādiḥ/ netranimīlanādayas tu nidrāyā evānubhāvā na tv asya, anidaṃjanyatvāt/ yat tu prācīnaiḥ "asyānubhāvā nibhṛtagātranetranimīlanaṃ" ityādy uktaṃ tadanyathāsiddhānām api teṣām etadbhāvavyāpakatvād iti dhyeyam/ udāharaṇam-- "akaruṇa mṛṣābhāṣāsindho vimuñca mamāñcalaṃ tava paricitaḥ snehaḥ samyaṅ mayety anubhāṣiṇīm/ aviralagaladbāṣpāṃ tanvīṃ nirastavibhūṣaṇāṃ ka iha bhavatīṃ bhadre nidre vinā vinivedayet//" eṣā pravāsagatasya svapne 'pi priyām evaṃbhāṣiṇīṃ dṛṣṭavato nidrāṃ prati kasyacid uktiḥ/ yady apy evaṃbhūtāyāḥ priyatamāvasthāyā nivedanena nidre mama bhavatyā mahānupakāraḥ kṛta iti vastu, vipralambhaśṛṅgāraś cātra pratītipatham avatarati, tathāpi puraḥsphūrtikatayā svapnadhvananam atrodāhṛtaṃ, na prānte tayor dhvananaṃ niroddhum īṣṭe/
nidrānāśaś ca tatpūrtisvapnāntabalavacchabdasparśādibhir jāyata iti ta evātra vibhāvāḥ/ akṣimardanagātramardanādayo 'nubhāvāḥ/ tatra saṃkṣepeṇodāharaṇam-- "nitarāṃ hitayādya nidrayā me bata yāme carame niveditāyāḥ/ sudṛśo vacanaṃ śṛṇomi yāvan mayi tāvat pracukopa vārivāhaḥ//" atra garjitaśravaṇaṃ vibhāvaḥ/ priyāvacanaśravaṇollāsanāśo 'nubhāvas tūnneyaḥ/ kecid avidyādhvaṃsajanyam apy amum āmananti/ teṣāṃ mate-- "naṣṭo mohaḥ smṛtir labdhā tvatprasādān mayācyuta/ sthito 'smi gatasaṃdehaḥ kariṣye vacanaṃ tava//" iti gītāpadyam udāhāryam/ na tu vārivāhaviṣayāyā asūyāyā evātra vākyārthateti śaṅkyam/ vibodhapratītau hi satyāṃ tasminn anaucityāvagame saty anucitavibodhajanakatvena vārivāhe 'sūyāyā vilambena pratīteḥ, paramukhanirīkṣakatvāt/ syād api tasyā api prādhānyam, yadi vārivāhe niṣkaruṇatvādibodhakaṃ kiṃcid api syāt/ nāpi svapnasya, vārivāhanādena tannāśasyaiva pratipatteḥ/ astu vā svapnabhāvapraśamenāsūyayā ca sahāsya saṃkaraḥ/ idaṃ tu nodāhāryam-- "gāḍham āliṅgya sakalāṃ yāminīṃ saha tasthuṣīm/ nidrāṃ vihāya sa prātar āliliṅgātha cetanām//" vibodhasya cetanāpadavācyatvāt/ yathā kaścit satyapratijño dvābhyāṃ nāyikābhyāṃ dvau kālāv upabhogārthaṃ dattvā yathocite kāla ekām upabhujya kālakantare pravṛtte tāṃ vihāyāparāṃ bhuṅkte, tathaivāyaṃ rātrau nidrāṃ prātaś cetanām iti samāsokter eveha prakāśanāt/
prāgvat kāraṇānāṃ kāryāṇāṃ ca krameṇa vibhāvānubhāvatvam/ udāharaṇam-- "vakṣojāgraṃ pāṇināmṛṣya dūre yātasya drāgānanābjaṃ priyasya/ śoṇāgrābhyāṃ bhāminī locanābhyāṃ joṣaṃ joṣam joṣam evāvatasthe//" iha tv ākasmikastanāgrasparśo vibhāvaḥ/ nayanāruṇyanirnimeṣanirīkṣaṇe anubhāvau/ nanu krodhāmarṣayoḥ sthāyisaṃcāriṇor bhāvayoḥ kiṃ bhedakam iti cet, viṣayatāvailakṣaṇyam eveti gṛhāṇa/ tatra tu gamakaṃ jhaṭiti paravināśādau pravṛttir vacanavaimukhyādikaṃ ceti kāryavailakṣaṇyam/
taduktam-- "anubhāvapidhānārthe 'vahitthaṃ bhāva ucyate/ tadvibhāvyaṃ bhayavrīḍādhārṣṭyakauṭilyagauravaiḥ//" yathā-- "prasaṅge gopānāṃ guruṣu mahimānaṃ yadupater upākarṇya svidyatpulakitakapolā kulavadhūḥ/ viṣajvālājālaṃ jhagiti vamataḥ pannagapateḥ phaṇāyāṃ sāścaryaṃ kathayatitarāṃ tāṇḍavavidhim//
atra vrīḍā vibhāvaḥ/ tādṛśakāliyakathāprasaṅgo 'nubhāvaḥ/ evaṃ bhayādiprayojyam apy udāhāryam/
yadāhuḥ-- "nṛpāparādho 'saddoṣakīrtanaṃ coradhāraṇam/ vibhāvāḥ syur atho bandho vadhas tāḍanabhanabhartsane//
ete yatrānubhāvās tadaugryaṃ nirdayatātmakam//" iti/ yathā-- "avāpya bhaṅgaṃ khalu saṃgarāṅgaṇe nitāntam aṅgādhipater amaṅgalam/ paraprabhāvaṃ mama gāṇḍivaṃ dhanur vinindatas te hṛdayaṃ na kampate//" eṣā karṇena parābhūtaṃ gāṇḍivaṃ nindantaṃ yudhiṣṭhiraṃ prati dhanaṃjayasyoktiḥ/ yudhiṣṭhirakartṛkā gāṇḍivanindātra vibhāvaḥ/ vadhecchānubhāvaḥ/ na cāmarṣogratayor nāsti bheda iti vācyam/ prāg udāhṛte 'marṣadhvanāv ugratāyā apratīteḥ/ nāpy asau krodhaḥ/ tasya sthāyitvenāsyāḥ saṃcāriṇītvenaiva bhedāt/
śuktirajatādijñānavyāvṛttaye janmāntam/ udāharaṇam-- "akaruṇahṛdaya priyatama muñcāmi tvām itaḥ paraṃ nāham/ ity ālapati karāmbujam ādāyālījanasya vikalā sā//" eṣā pravāsagataṃ svanāyikāvṛttāntaṃ pṛcchantaṃ nāyakaṃ prati kasyāścit saṃdeśahāriṇyā uktiḥ/ priyaviraho 'tra vibhāvaḥ/ asaṃbaddhoktir anubhāvaḥ/ unmādasya vyādhāv antarbhāve saṃbhavaty api pṛthag upādānaṃ vyādhyantarāpekṣayā vaicitryaviśeṣasphoraṇāya/
na cātra prāṇaviyogātmakaṃ mukhyaṃ maraṇam ucitaṃ grahītum/ cittavṛttyātmakeṣu bhāveṣu tasyāprasakteḥ/ bhāveṣu ca sarveṣu kāryasahavartitayā śarīraprāṇasaṃyogasya hetutvāt/ udāharaṇam-- "dayitasya guṇānanusmarantī śayane saṃprati yā vilokitāsīt/ adhunā khalu hanta sā kṛśāṅgī giram aṅgīkurute na bhāṣitāpi//" priyaviraho 'tra vibhāva/ vacanavirāmo 'nubhāvaḥ/ hantapadasyātrātyantam upakārakatvād vākyavyaṅgyo 'py ayaṃ bhāvaḥ padavyaṅgyatām āvahati/ etena bhāvasya padavyaṅgyatāyāṃ nātyantaṃ vaicitryam iti parāstam/ dayitasya guṇān anusmarantīty anena vyajyamānaṃ "caramāvasthāyām api tasyā dayitaguṇavismaraṇaṃ nābhūd" iti vastu, vipralambhasya śokasya vā caramam abhivyaktasya poṣakam/ ayaṃ ca bhāvaḥ svavyañjakavākyottaravartinā vākyāntareṇa saṃdarbhaghaṭakena nāyikādeḥ pratyujjīvanavarṇane vipralambhasya, anyathā tu karuṇasya poṣaka iti vivekaḥ/ kavayaḥ punar amuṃ prādhānyena na varṇayanti, amaṅgalaprāyatvāt/
sa ca niścayānukūlaḥ/ "yadi sā mithilendranandinī nitarām eva na vidyate bhuvi/
atha me katham asti jīvitaṃ na vinālambanam āśritasthitiḥ//" svātmani bhagavato rāmasyaiṣoktiḥ/ bhuvi sītāsti na veti saṃdeho 'tra vibhāvaḥ/ bhrūkṣepaśiroṅgulinartanam ākṣiptam anubhāvaḥ/ na cāsau cinteti śakyaṃ vaditum, cintāyā niyamena niścayaṃ pratyaprayojakatvāt/ kiṃ bhaviṣyati kathaṃ bhaviṣyatīty ādy ākārāyāś cintāyāḥ, idam itthaṃ bhavitum arhati prāyaśa ityākārasya vitarkasya viṣayavailakṣaṇyopalambhāc ca/ na vinetyādinokto 'rthāntaranyāso 'py asminn evānukūlaḥ/
udāharaṇam-- "bhāskarasūnāv astaṃ yāte jāte ca pāṇḍavotkarṣe/ duryodhanasya jīvita katham iva nādyāpi niryāsi//" atra svāpakarṣaparotkarṣayor darśanaṃ vibhāvaḥ/ jīvitaniryāṇāśaṃsā, tadākṣiptaṃ vadananamanādi cānubhāvaḥ/ asminn eva ca viṣādadhvanau duryodhanasyety arthāntarasaṃkramitavācyadhvanir anugrāhakaḥ/ na cātra trāsabhāvadhvanitvaṃ śakyam, paravīrasya duryodhanasya trāsaleśasyāpyayogāt/ nāpi cintādhvanitvam, yuddhvā mariṣyāmīti tasya vyavasāyāt/ nāpi dainyadhvanitvam, sakalasainyakṣaye 'pi vipadas tenāgaṇanāt/ na vā vīrarasadhvanitvam, maraṇasya śaraṇīkaraṇe parāpakarṣajīvitasyotsāhasyābhāvāt/ idaṃ punar atra nodāhāryam-- "ayi pavanarayāṇāṃ nirdayānāṃ hayānāṃ ślathaya gatim ahaṃ no saṃgaraṃ draṣṭum īhe/ śrutivivaram amī me dārayanti prakupyad bhujaganibhabhujānāṃ bāhujānāṃ ninādāḥ//
atra trāsasyaiva pratīyamānatvena viṣādasyāpratīteḥ/ leśatayā pratitau vā trāsa evānuguṇyaucityena dhvanivyapadeśāyogyatvāt/
iṣṭavirahādir atra vibhāvaḥ/ tvarācintādayo 'nubhāvāḥ/ yadāhuḥ-- "saṃjātam iṣṭavirahād uddīptaṃ priyasaṃsmṛteḥ/ nidrayā tandrayā gātragauraveṇa ca cintayā//
anubhāvitam ākhyātam autsukyaṃ bhāvakovidaiḥ//" iti/ udāharaṇam-- "nipatadbāṣpasaṃrodham uktacāñcalyatārakam/ kadā nayananīlābjam ālokeya mṛgīdṛśaḥ//"
udāharaṇam-- "līlayā vihitasindhubandhana so 'yam eti raghuvaṃśanandanaḥ/ darpadurvilasito daśānanaḥ kutra yāmi nikaṭe kulakṣayaḥ//
eṣā svātmani mandodaryā uktiḥ/ raghunandanāgamanam atra vibhāvaḥ/ kutra yāmīty etad vyaṅgyaḥ sthairyābhāvo 'nubhāvaḥ/ na cātra cintā prādhānyena vyajyata iti śakyate vaktum, kutra yāmīti sphuṭaṃ pratītena sthairyābhāvenodvegasyeva cintāyā apratyāyanāt/ paraṃ tv āvegacarvaṇāyāṃ tatparipoṣakatayā guṇatvena cintāpi viṣayībhavati/
iyaṃ ca mohāt pūrvataḥ parataś ca jāyate/ yad āha-- "kāryāviveko jaḍatā pasyataḥ śṛṇvato 'pi vā/ tadvibhāvāḥ priyāniṣṭadarśanaśravaṇe rujā//
anubhāvās tv amī tūṣṇīṃ bhāvavismaraṇādayaḥ/ sā pūrvaṃ parato vā syān mohād iti vidāṃ matam//" udāharaṇam-- "yad avadhi dayito vilocanābhyāṃ sahacari daivavaśena dūrato 'bhūt/ tad avadhi śithilīkṛto madīyair atha karaṇaiḥ praṇayo nijakriyāsu//" priyaviraho 'tra vibhāvaḥ/ karaṇaiś cakṣuḥśravaṇādibhiḥ kriyāsu tattatpramitiṣu praṇayasya śithilīkaraṇam anubhāvaḥ/ mohe cakṣurādibhiś cākṣuṣāder ajananam, iha tu prakāraviśeṣavaiśiṣṭyena bāhulyenājananam iti tasmād asya viśeṣaḥ/ ata evodāharaṇe śithilīkṛta ity uktam, na tu tyakta iti/
atra ca nāsāmarthyam/ nāpi kāryākāryavivekaśūnyatvam/ tena kāryākaraṇarūpasyānubhāvasya tulyatve 'pi glāner jaḍatāyāś cāsya bhedaḥ/ udāharaṇam-- "nikhilāṃ rajanīṃ priyeṇa dūrād upayātena vibodhitā kathābhiḥ/ adhikaṃ na hi pārayāmi vaktuṃ sakhi mā jalpa tavāyasī rasajñā//" eṣā hi priyāgamanadvitīyadivase muhurniśāvṛttāntaṃ pṛcchantīṃ sakhīṃ prati rajanijāgaraṇajanitālasyāyāḥ kasyāścid uktiḥ/ atra rajanijāgaraṇaṃ vibhāvaḥ/ adhikasaṃbhāṣaṇābhāvo 'nubhāvaḥ/ jaḍatāyāṃ mohāt pūrvavartitvam uttaravartitvaṃ vā niyatam, na tv atrety aparo viśeṣaḥ/ gopanīyaviṣayatvād yadi kathābhir ity avivakṣitavācyaṃ tadā śramo 'stu paripoṣakaḥ/ śramajanye hy ālasye śramasya poṣakatāyā avāryatvāt/ atitṛptyādijanite tv ālasye śramād viviktaviṣayatvaṃ bodhyam/
imām evāsahanādiśabdair vyavaharanti/ yathā-- "kutra śaivaṃ dhanur idaṃ kva cāyaṃ prākṛtaḥ śiśuḥ/ bhaṅgas tu sarvasaṃhartrā kālenaiva vinirmitaḥ//" eṣā bhagnaharakārmukasya bhagavato rāmasya parākramam asahamānānāṃ tatratyānāṃ rājñām uktiḥ/ atra ca śrīmaddāśarathibalasya sarvotkṛṣṭatāyā darśanaṃ vibhāvaḥ/ prākṛtaśiśupadagamyā nindā anubhāvaḥ/ "tṛṣṇālolavilocane kalayati prācīṃ cakoravraje maunaṃ muñcati kiṃ ca kairavakule kāme dhanur dhunvati/ māne mānavatījanasya sapadi prasthātukāme 'dhūnā dhātaḥ kiṃ nu vidhau vidhātum ucito dhārādharāḍambaraḥ//" atrāpi yady api tadīyocchṛṅkhalatādidarśanajanyā anucitakāritvarūpanindāprakāśānubhāvitā kavigatā vidhātrālambanāsūyā vyajyata iti śakyate vaktum, tathāpi kāryakāraṇayos tulyatvād abhivyaktenāmarṣeṇa śabalitaivāsau na viviktatayā pratiyate/ nahi vidhātur aparādha iva bhagavato rāmasyāparādho 'sti yena kaver iva vīrāṇām apy amarṣo 'bhivyajyeta/ svabhāvo hi mahonnatakriyāniṣpādanaṃ vīrāṇām/ atrāprastutacandravṛttāntena prastutarājakumārādivṛttāntasya dhvananān nāsty asūyādhvanitvam iti tu na vācyam/ ekadhvaner dhvanyantarāvirodhitvāt/ anyathā mahāvākyadhvaner avāntaravākyadhvanibhiḥ, teṣāṃ ca padadhvanibhiḥ saha sāmānādhikaraṇyaṃ kutrāpi na syāt/
vyādhitvenāsya kathane 'pi viśeṣākāreṇa punaḥ kathanaṃ bībhatsabhayānakayor asyaiva vyādher aṅgatvaṃ nānyasyeti sphoraṇāya/ vipralambhe tu vyādhyantarasyāpi ca/ udāharaṇam-- "harim āgatam ākarṇya mathurām antakāntakam/ kampamānaḥ śvasan kaṃso nipapāta mahītale//" atra bhayaṃ vibhāvaḥ/ kampaniḥśvāsapatanādayo 'nubhāvāḥ/
yad āhu-- "amarṣaprātikūlyerṣyārāgadveṣāś ca matsaraḥ/ iti yatra vibhāvāḥ syur anubhāvas tu bhartsanam//
vākpāruṣyaṃ prahāraś ca tāḍanaṃ vadhabandhane/ taccāpalam anālocya kāryakāritvam iṣyate//" iti/ udāharaṇam-- "ahitavrata pāpātman maivaṃ me darśayānanam/ ātmānaṃ hantum icchāmi yena tvam asi bhāvitaḥ//" eṣā bhagavadanuraktivighaṭanopāyam apaśyataḥ prahlādaṃ prati hiraṇyakaśipor uktiḥ/ bhagavaddveṣotthāpitaḥ putradveṣo 'tra vibhāvaḥ/ ātmavadhecchā paruṣavacanaṃ cānubhāvaḥ/ na cāmarṣa evātra vyajyata iti vācyam/ sadaiva bhagavadanurāgiṇi prahlāde hiraṇyakaśipor amarṣasya cirakālasaṃbhṛtatvenātmavadhecchāyā idaṃprathamatānupapatteḥ/ idaṃprathamakāryasya cedaṃprathamakāraṇaprayojyatayā prācīnacittavṛttivilakṣaṇāyā eva capalatākhyacittavṛtteḥ siddheḥ/ na cāmarṣaprakarṣa evātmavadhecchādikāraṇam abhivyajyatām iti vācyam/ prakarṣasyāpi svābhāvikavilakṣaṇalakṣaṇatāyā āvaśyakatayā tasyaiva capalatāpadārthatvāt/ nīcapuruṣeṣv
udāharaṇam-- "yadi lakṣmaṇa sā mṛgekṣaṇā na madīkṣāsaraṇiṃ sameṣyati/ amunā jaḍajīvitena me jagatā vā viphalena kiṃ phalam//" nityānityavastuvivekajanyatvābhāvān nāsau rasavyapadeśahetuḥ/ devādiviṣayā ratir yathā-- "bhavaddvāri krudhyajjayavijayadaṇḍāhatidalat- kirīṭās te kīṭā iva vidhimahendraprabhṛtayaḥ/ vitiṣṭhante yuṣman nayanaparipātotkalikayā varākāḥ ke tatra kṣapitamura nākādhipatayaḥ//" atrāpamānasahanabhagavaddvāraniṣevaṇabhagavatkaṭākṣapātābhilāṣādibhir brahmādigatā bhagavadālambanā ratir nābhivyajyate, api tu bhagavadaiśvaryam avāṅmanasagocara iti cet tathāpi tādṛśabhagavadaiśvaryavarṇanānubhāvitayā kavigatabhagavadālambanaratyā dhvanitvam akṣatam eva/ idaṃ vodāharaṇam-- "na dhanaṃ na ca rājyasaṃpadaṃ na hi vidyām idam ekam arthaye/ mayi dhehi manāg api prabho karuṇābhaṅgitaraṅgitāṃ dṛśam//" atra dhanādyapekṣāśūnyasya bhagavaddṛgantapātābhilāṣo hi bhagavaty atyantānuraktiṃ vyanakti/ evaṃ saṃkṣepeṇa nirūpitā bhāvāḥ//
atha katham asya saṃkhyāniyamaḥ/ mātsaryodvegadambherṣyāvivekanirṇayaklaibyakṣamākutukotkaṇṭhāvinayasaṃśayadhārṣṭyādīnām api tatra tatra lakṣyeṣu darśanāt iti cet, na/ ukteṣv evaiṣām antarbhāveṇa saṃkhyāntarānupapatteḥ/ asūyāto mātsaryasya, trāsād udvegasya, avahitthākhyād bhāvād dambhasya, amarṣād īrṣyāyāḥ, mater vivekanirṇayayoḥ, dainyāt klaibyasya, dhṛteḥ kṣamāyāḥ, autsukyāt kutukotkaṇṭhayoḥ, lajjāyā vinayasya, tarkāt saṃśayasya, cāpalād dhārṣṭyasya ca vastutaḥ sūkṣme bhede 'pi nāntarīyakatayā tadanatiriktasyaivādhyavasāyāt/ munivacanānupālanasya saṃbhava ucchṛṅkhalatāyā anaucityāt/ eṣu ca saṃcāribhāveṣu madhye kecana keṣāṃcana vibhāvā anubhāvāś ca bhavanti/ tathā hi-- īrṣyāyā nirvedaṃ prati vibhāvatvam, asūyāṃ prati cānubhāvatvam/ cintāyā nidrāṃ prati vibhāvatvam, autsukyaṃ prati cānubhāvatetyādi svayam ūhyam/ atha rasābhāsaḥ-- tatra
vibhāvādāv anaucityaṃ punar lokānāṃ vyavahārato vijñeyam/ yatra teṣām ayuktam iti dhīr iti kecid āhuḥ/ tad apare na kṣamante/ munipatnyādiviṣayakaratyādeḥ saṃgrahe 'pi bahunāyakaviṣayāyā anubhayaniṣṭhāyāś ca rater asaṃgrahāt/ tatra vibhāvagatasyānaucityasyābhāvāt/ tasmād anaucityena ratyādir viśeṣaṇīyaḥ/ itthaṃ cānucitavibhāvālambanāyā bahunāyakaviṣayāyā anubhayaniṣṭhāyāś ca saṃgraha iti/ anaucityaṃ ca prāgvad eva/ tatra rasādyābhāsatvaṃ rasatvādinā na samānādhikaraṇam/ nirmalasyaiva rasāditvāt/ "hetvābhāsatvam iva hetutvena" ity eke/ "na hy anucitatvenātmahāniḥ, api tu sadoṣatvād ābhāsavyavahāraḥ/ aśvābhāsādivyavahāravat" ity apare/ udāharaṇam-- "śatenopāyānāṃ katham api gataḥ saudhaśikharaṃ sudhāphenasvacche rahasi śayitāṃ puṣpaśayane/ vibodhya kṣāmāṅgīṃ cakitanayanāṃ smeravadanāṃ saniḥśvāsaṃ śliṣyaty ahaha sukṛtī rājaramaṇīm//" atrālambanam anucitapraṇayā rājaramaṇī/ rahorajanyādy uddīpanam/ sāhasena rājāntaḥpure gamanam, prāṇeṣūpekṣā, niḥśvāsāśleṣādayaś cānubhāvāḥ/ śaṅkādayaḥ saṃcāriṇaḥ/ niṣiddhālambanakatvāc cāsyā rateḥ, ābhāsatvaṃ rasasya/ na cātra cakitanayanām ity anena parapuruṣasparśatrāsābhivyaktyā rater anubhayaniṣṭhatety ābhāsatāhetur vācyaḥ/ asyāś ca cirāya tasminn āsaktāyā antaḥpure parapuruṣāgamanasyātyantam asaṃbhāvanayā ka eṣa māṃ bodhayatīty ādāv ucita eva trāsaḥ/ anantaraṃ ca paricayābhivyaktyā so 'yaṃ matpriyo madarthaṃ prāṇān api tṛṇīkṛtyāgata iti jñānād utpannaṃ harṣam abhivyañjayat smeravadanām iti viśeṣaṇaṃ ratiṃ tadīyām api vyanakti/ paraṃ tu prādhānyaṃ nāyakaniṣṭhāyā eva rateḥ, sakalavākyārthatvāt/ yathā vā-- "bhavanaṃ karuṇāvatī viśantī gamanājñālavalābhalālaseṣu/ taruṇeṣu vilocanābjamālām atha bālā pathi pātayāṃbabhūva//
atra kutaś cid āgacchantyāḥ pathi tadīyarūpayauvanagṛhītamānasair yuvabhir anugamyamānāyāḥ kasyāś cid bhavanapraveśasamaye nijasevāsārthakyavijñānāya gamanājñāpanarūpalābhalālaseṣu teṣu paramapariśramasmaraṇasaṃjātakaruṇāyā gamanājñādānanivedakasya vilocanāmbujamālāparikṣepasyānubhāvasya varṇanād abhivyajyamānā ratir bahuvacanena bahuviṣayā gamyata iti bhavaty ayam api rasābhāsaḥ/ yathā vā-- "bhujapañjare gṛhītā navapariṇītā vareṇa vadhūḥ/ tatkālajālapatitā bālakuraṅgīva vepate nitarām//" atra rater navavadhvā manāg apy asparśād anubhayaniṣṭhatvenābhāsatvam/ yathā coktam-- "upanāyakasaṃsthāyāṃ munigurupatnīgatāyāṃ ca/ bahunāyakaviṣayāyāṃ ratau tathānubhayaniṣṭhāyām//" iti/ atra muniguruśabdayor upalakṣaṇaparatayā rājāder api grahaṇam/ athātra kiṃ vyaṅgyam-- "vyānamrāś calitāś caiva sphāritāḥ paramākulāḥ/ pāṇḍuputreṣu pāñcālyāḥ patanti prathamā dṛśaḥ//" atra vyānamratayā dharmātmatāprayojyaṃ yudhiṣṭhire sabhaktitvam, calitatayā sthūlākāratāprayojyaṃ bhīmasene satrāsatvam, sphāritatayā alaukikaśauryaśravaṇaprayojyam arjune saharṣatvam, paramākulatayā paramasaundaryaprayojyaṃ nakulasahadevayor autsukyaṃ ca vyañjayantībhir dṛgbhiḥ pāñcālyā bahuviṣayāyā rater abhivyañjanād rasābhāsa eveti navyāḥ/ prāñcas tv apariṇetṛbahunāyakaviṣayatve rater ābhāsatety āhuḥ/ tatra śṛṅgārarasa iva śṛṅgārābhāso 'pi dvividhaḥ/ saṃyogavipralambhabhedāt/ saṃyogābhāsas tv anupadam evodāhṛtaḥ/ vipralambhābhāso yathā-- "vyatyastaṃ lapati kṣaṇaṃ kṣaṇam atho maunaṃ samālambate sarvasmin vidadhāti kiṃ ca viṣaye dṛṣṭi nirālambanām/ śvāsaṃ dīrgham urīkaroti na manāg aṅgeṣu dhatte dhṛtiṃ vaidehīkamanīyatākavalito hā hanta laṅkeśvaraḥ//" atra sītālambaneyaṃ laṅkeśagatā vipralambharatir anubhayaniṣṭhatayā jagadgurupatnīviṣayakatayā cābhāsatāṃ gatā, vyatyastaṃ lapatīty ādibhir uktibhir vyajyamānair unmādaśramamohacintāvyādhibhis tathaivābhāsatāṃ gataiḥ prādhānyena paripoṣyamāṇā dhvanivyapadeśahetuḥ/ evaṃ kalahaśīlakuputrādyālambanatayā vītarāgādiniṣṭhatayā ca varṇyamānaḥ śokaḥ, brahmavidyānadhikāricāṇḍālādigatatvena ca nirvedaḥ, kadaryakātarādigatatvena pitrādyālambanatvena vā krodhotsāhau, aindrajālikādyālambanatvena ca vismayaḥ, gurvādyālambanatayā ca hāsaḥ, mahāvīragatatvena bhayam, yajñīyapaśuvasāsṛṅmāṃsādyālambanatayā varṇyamānā jugupsā ca rasābhāsāḥ/ vistṛtibhayāc cāmī nehodāhṛtāḥ sudhībhir unneyāḥ/ evam evānucitaviṣayā bhāvābhāsāḥ/ yathā-- sarve 'pi vismṛtipathaṃ viṣayāḥ prayātā vidyāpi khedakalitā vimukhībabhūva/ sā kevalaṃ hariṇaśāvakalocanā me naivāpayāti hṛdayād adhidevateva//
gurukule vidyābhyāsasamaye tadīyakanyālāvaṇyagṛhītamānasasyānyasya vā kasya cid apratiṣiddhagamanāṃ smarato deśāntaraṃ gatasyeyam uktiḥ/ atra ca svātmatyāgātyāgābhyāṃ srakcandanādiṣu viṣayeṣu, cirasevitāyāṃ vidyāyāṃ ca kṛtaghnatvam, asyāṃ ca lokottaratvam abhivyajyamānaṃ vyatirekavapuḥsmṛtim eva puṣṇātīti saiva pradhānam/ evaṃ ca tyāgābhāvagataṃ sārvadikatvaṃ vyañjayanty adhidevatopamāpi/ eṣā cānucitaviṣayakatvād anubhayaniṣṭhatvāc ca bhāvābhāsaḥ/ yadi punar iyaṃ tatpariṇetur evoktis tadā bhāvadhvanir eva//
atha bhāvaśāntiḥ--
sa cotpattyavacchinna eva grāhyaḥ, tasyaiva sahṛdayacamatkāritvāt/ udāharaṇam-- "muñcasi nādyāpi ruṣaṃ bhāmini mudirālirudiyāya/ iti tanvyāḥ pativacanair apāyi nayanābjakoṇaśoṇaruciḥ//" iha tādṛśapriyavacanaśravaṇaṃ vibhāvaḥ/ nayanakoṇagataśoṇarucer nāśaḥ, tadabhivyaktaḥ prasādo vānubhāvaḥ/ utpattikālāvacchinno roṣanāśo vyaṅgyaḥ/ tathā--
udāharaṇam-- "vīkṣya vakṣasi vipakṣakāminīhāralakṣma dayitasya bhāminī/ aṃsadeśavalayīkṛtāṃ kṣaṇād ācakarṣa nijabāhuvallarīm//" atrāpi dayitavakṣogatavipakṣakāminīhāralakṣmadarśanaṃ vibhāvaḥ/ priyāṃsadeśavalayīkṛtanijabāhulatākarṣaṇam anubhāvaḥ/ roṣodayo vyaṅgyaḥ/ yady āpi bhāvaśāntau bhāvāntarodayasya, bhāvodaye vā pūrvaṃ bhāvaśānter āvaśyakatvān nānayor vivikto vyavahārasya viṣayaḥ, tathāpi dvayor ekatra camatkāravirahāt, camatkārādhīnatvāc ca vyavahārasya, asti viṣayavibhāgaḥ/ evam--
udāharaṇam-- "yauvanodgamanitāntaśaṅkitāḥ śīlaśauryabalakāntilobhitāḥ/ saṃkucanti vikasanti rāghave jānakīnayananīrajaśriyaḥ//" atra bhagavaddāśarathigatasya lokottarayauvanodgamasya, tādṛśasyaiva śīlaśauryādeś ca darśanaṃ vibhāvaḥ/ nayanagatasaṃkocavikāsāv anubhāvaḥ/ vrīḍautsukyayoḥ saṃdhir vyaṅgyaḥ/ tathā-- bhāvaśabalatvaṃ bhāvānāṃ bādhyabādhakabhāvam āpannānām udāsīnānāṃ vā vyāmiśraṇam//
ekacamatkṛtijanakajñānagocaratvam iti yāvat/ udāharaṇam-- "pāpaṃ hanta mayā hatena vihitaṃ kītāpi yady āpitā, sā mām indumukhī vinā bata vane kiṃ jīvitaṃ dhāsyati/ ālokeya kathaṃ mukhāni kṛtināṃ kiṃ te vadiṣyanti māṃ rājyaṃ yātu rasātalaṃ punar idaṃ na prāṇituṃ kāmaye//" atra matyasūyāviṣādasmṛtivitarkavrīḍāśaṅkānirvedānāṃ prāguktasvasvavibhāvajanmanāṃ śabalatā/ yat tu kāvyaprakāśaṭīkākāraiḥ "uttarottareṇa bhāvena pūrvapūrvabhāvopamardaḥ śabalatā" ity abhyadhītaya, tan na/ "paśyet kaścic cala capala re kā tvarāhaṃ kumārī hastālambaṃ vitara hahahā vyutkramaḥ kvāsi yāsi" ity atra śaṅkāsūyādhṛtismṛtiśramadainyamatyautsukyānām upamardaleśaśūnyatve 'pi śabalatāyā rājastutiguṇatvena pañcamollāse mūlakṛtaiva nirūpaṇāt/ svottaraviśeṣaguṇena jāyamānas tu nāśo na vyaṅgyaḥ/ na vopamardapadavācyaḥ, nāpi camatkārī tasmāt/ "nārikelajalakṣīrasitākadalamiśraṇe/ vilakṣaṇo tathāsvādo bhāvānāṃ saṃhatau tathā//" atredaṃ bodhyam-- ya ete bhāvaśāntyudayasaṃdhiśabalatādhvanaya udāhṛtās te 'pi bhāvadhvanaya eva/ vidyamānatayā carvyamāṇeṣv ivotpattyavacchinnatvavinaśyadavasthatvasaṃdhīyamānatvaparasparasamānādhikaraṇatvaiḥ prakāraiś carvyamāṇeṣu bhāveṣv eva prādhānyasyaucityāt, camatkṛtes tatraiva viśrānteḥ/ yady apy utpattivināśasaṃdhiśabalatānāṃ tatsaṃbandhināṃ bhāvānāṃ ca samānāyāṃ carvaṇāviṣayatāyāṃ na prādhānyaṃ vinigantuṃ śakyate, tathāpi sthitau bhāveṣu pradhānatāyāḥ kḷptatvāt, bhāvaśāntyādiṣv api teṣv eva śāntipratiyogitvādibhir vyajyamāneṣu tasyāḥ kalpayitum aucityāt/ kiṃ ca yadi bhāvaśāntyādau bhāvo na pradhānam, kiṃ tu tadupasarjanakaśāntyādir evety abhyupeyate tadā vyajyamānabhāveṣv abhihitatatpraśamādiṣu kāvyeṣu bhāvapraśamādidhvanitvaṃ na syāt/ tathā hi-- "uṣasi pratipakṣanāyikāsadanād antikam añcati priye/ sudṛśo nayanābjakoṇayor udiyāya tvarayāruṇadyutiḥ//" atrotpūrvakeṇaitinā bhāvodayasya vācyatayaiva pratyāyanāt/ (nanu)udayasya vācyatve 'pi bhāvasyāvācyatvād dhanitvaṃ sustham iti cet, pradhānasya vyapadeśānaupayikatve 'pradhānakṛtavyapadeśānupapatteḥ/ asmanmate tūtpatter vācyatve 'py utpattyavacchinnasyāmarṣasya pradhānasyāvācyatvād yukta eva bhāvodayadhvanivyapadeśaḥ/ evaṃ vyajyamānabhāvapratiyogikasya praśamasya vācyatve bhāvaśāntidhvanitvaṃ na syāt/ yathā-- "kṣamāpaṇaikapadayoḥ padayoḥ patati priye/ śemuḥ sarojanayanānayanāruṇakāntayaḥ//" nanu śabdavācyānāṃ praśamādīnām aruṇakāntyaivānvayāt aruṇakāntipraśamāder eva vācyatvaṃ paryavasitam, na tu tādṛśapraśamādivyaṅgyasya roṣapraśamādeḥ, vyaṅgyavyañjakabhedasyāvaśyakatvāt/ na cāruṇyavyaṅgyaroṣasyaiva vācyībhūtapraśamādyanvaya iti vācyam/ vācyavyaṅgyapratītyor ānupūrvyeṇa siddhatayā vācyānvayabodhavelāyāṃ vācyaiḥ saha vyaṅgyānvayānupapatteḥ/ anyathā "sudṛśo nayanābjakoṇayoḥ" ity asyānvayo na syāt/ maivam/ evam api-- "nirvāsayantīṃ dhṛtim aṅganānāṃ śobhāṃ harer eṇadṛśo dhayantyāḥ/ cirāparādhasmṛtimāṃsalo 'pi roṣaḥ kṣaṇaprāghuṇiko babhūva//" ityādāv api bhāvapraśamadhvanitvāpatteḥ, bhāvasya vācyatve 'pi pradhānasya tatpraśamasya vyaṅgyatvāt/ ubhayor apy avācyatvam apekṣitam iti cet, prāguktapadyadvaye śamatvodayatvābhyāṃ śamodayayor vācyatvād anudāharaṇatvāpatteḥ/ iṣṭāpattis tu sahṛdayānām anucitaiva/ tasmād bhāvapraśamādiṣv api prādhānyena bhāvānām eva camatkāritvam, praśamādes tūpasarjanatvam ato na tasya vācyatādoṣaḥ/ idaṃ punar bhāvadhvanibhyo bhāvaśāntyādidhvanīnāṃ camatkāravailakṣaṇye nidānam-- yad ekatra carvaṇāyāṃ bhāveṣu sthityavacchinnāmarṣāditvam, amarṣāditvam eva vā prakāraḥ/ anyatra tu praśamāvasthatvādir apīti/ rasasya tu sthāyimūlakatvāt praśamāder asaṃbhavaḥ, saṃbhave vā na camatkāraḥ, iti na sa vicāryate/ so 'yaṃ nigaditaḥ sarvo 'pi ratyādilakṣaṇo vyaṅgyaprapañcaḥ sphuṭe prakaraṇe jhagiti pratiteṣu vibhāvānubhāvavyabhicāriṣu sahṛdayatamena pramātrā sūkṣmeṇaiva samayeta pratīyata iti hetuhetumatoḥ paurvāparyakramasyālakṣaṇād alakṣyakramo vyapadiśyate/ yatra tu vicāravedyaṃ prakaraṇam, unneyā vā vibhāvādayas tatra sāmagrīvilambādhīnaṃ camatkṛter māntharyam iti saṃlakṣyakramo 'py eṣa bhavati/ yathā-- "talpagatāpi ca sutanuḥ" iti prāg udāhṛte padye "saṃprati" ity etadarthāvagatir vilambena/ na khalu dharmigrāhakamānasiddhaṃ ratyādidhvaner alakṣyakramavyaṅgyatvam/ ata eva lakṣyakramaprasaṅge-- "evaṃvādini devarṣau pārśve pitur adhomukhī/ līlākamalapatrāṇi gaṇayāmāsa pārvatī/" ity atra kumārīsvābhāvyād apy adhomukhatvaviśiṣṭasya līlākamalapattragaṇanasyopapattyā manāgvilambena nāradakṛtavivāhādiprasaṅgavijñānottaraṃ vrīḍāyāś camatkaraṇāl lakṣyakramo 'yaṃ dhvaniḥ" iti prāhur ānandavardhanācāryāḥ/ rasabhāvādir artho dhvanyamāna eva, na vācyaḥ/ tathāpi na sarvo 'lakṣyakramasya viṣayaḥ" iti cābhinavaguptapādācāryāḥ/ syād etat, yady ayaṃ rasādiḥ saṃlakṣyakramasya viṣayaḥ syāt/ anuraṇanabhedagaṇanaprastāve "arthaśaktimūlasya dvādaśabhedāḥ" ity abhinavaguptoktiḥ, "tenāyaṃ dvādaśātmakaḥ" iti mammaṭoktiś ca na saṃgaccheta, vastvalaṃkārātmanā dvividhena vācyena svataḥsaṃbhavitvakaviprauḍhokti-niṣpannatvakavinibaddhavaktṛprauḍhoktiniṣpannatvais tribhir upādhibhis traividhyam āpannena ṣaḍātmanā vastvalaṃkārayor iva rasāder apy abhivyañjanād aṣṭādaśatvaprasaṅgāt/ atrocyate-- prakaṭair vibhāvānubhāvavyabhicāribhir alakṣyakramatayaiva vyajyamāno ratyādiḥ sthāyibhāvo rasībhavati, na saṃlakṣyakramatayā/ rasībhāvo hi nāma jhagiti jāyamānālaukikacamatkāraviṣayasthāyitvam/ saṃlakṣyakramatayā vyajyamānasya ratyādes tu vastumātrataiva, na rasāditvam iti teṣām āśayasya varṇanena na taduktīnāṃ virodhaḥ/ upapattis tv arthe 'smin vicāraṇīyā/ rasabhāvādir artha ity atra rasādiśabdo ratyādiparaḥ/ taditthaṃ nirūpitasyāsya rasādidhvaniprapañcasya padavarṇaracanāvākyaprabandhaiḥ padaikadeśair avarṇātmakai rāgādibhiś cābhivyaktim āmananti/ tatra vākyagatānāṃ padānāṃ sarveṣām api svārthopasthitidvārā vākyārthajñānopāyatve samāne 'pi kurvadrūpatayā camatkārāyogavyavacchinnatvena kasyacid eva dhvanivyapadeśahetutvam/ yathā "mandam ākṣipati" ity atra mandam ity asya/ racanāvarṇānāṃ tu padavākyāntargatatvena vyañjakatāvacchedakakoṭipraviṣṭatvam eva na tu vyañjakatvam iti yady api suvacam, tathāpi padavākyaviśiṣṭaracanātvena, racanāviśiṣṭapadavākyatvena vā vyañjakatvam iti vinigamanāviraheṇa ghaṭādau daṇḍacakrādeḥ kāraṇatvasyeva pratyekam eva vyañjakatāyāḥ siddhir iti prāñcaḥ/
varṇaracanāviśeṣāṇāṃ mādhuryādiguṇābhivyañjakatvam eva na rasābhivyañjakatvam, gauravān mānābhāvāc ca/ na hi guṇyabhivyañjanaṃ vinā guṇābhivyañjakatvaṃ nāstīty asti niyamaḥ, indriyatraye vyabhicārāt/ itthaṃ ca svasvavyañjakopanītānāṃ guṇināṃ guṇānām udāsīnānāṃ ca yathā parasparopaśleṣeṇaudāsīnyena vā tattatpramitigocaratā tathā rasānāṃ tadguṇānāṃ cābhivyāktiviṣayateti tu navyāḥ/ udāharaṇaṃ tu "tāṃ tamāla" ityādi prāg uktam eva vākyasya vyañjakatāyām api "āvirbhūtā yad avadhi" ityādi ca/ prabandhasya tu yogavāsiṣṭharāmāyaṇe śāntakaruṇayoḥ, ratnāvalyādīni ca śṛṅgārasya vyañjakatvān nidarśanāni prasiddhāni/ mannirmitāś ca pañja laharyo bhāvasya/ padaikadeśasya ca "nikhilam idaṃ jagad aṇḍakaṃ vahāmi" iti karūpataddhito vīrarasasya prāg evodāhṛtaḥ/ evaṃ rāgādibhir api vyaṅgyatve sahṛdayahṛdayam eva pramāṇam/ evam eṣāṃ rasādīnāṃ prādhānyena nirūpitāny udāharaṇāni/ guṇībhāve tu vakṣyante, nāmāni ca/ tatra prādhānya evaiṣāṃ rasāditvam, anyathā tu ratyāditvam eva/ nāmani rasapadaṃ tu ratyādiparam ity eke/ asty eva rasāditvaṃ, kiṃ tu na dhvanivyapadeśahetutvam ity apare//
